stablished 1953 N PO Box 46, New Castle, D 19720 October 2016 W S L (302) 307-3060 T T R ditor: Nancy Martin Last Flying Scot race of the season Commodore s Corner I want to say THANK YOU to all the members who have contributed to the lifeblood of our club. It takes much work and effort to keep our club vibrant and I want to express my appreciation to all the membership for your contributions. None of it happens without you! I am the only board member who will be stepping down this year. I want to take time to express my personal thanks to each of my fellow members for their dedication to our club. My job changed during the sailing season and I have been spending entirely too much time at work and too little time sailing. Many of the board members and former Commodores have picked up the slack for me. I want to thank all who have supported the club and me during 2016. Laura Fontana has done a wonderful job as our Membership Director. Many of you have joined the club through Laura s encouragement and enthusiasm. Laura has been able to exceed our membership goal for 2016 and I am happy to say that she will continue in this role next season. Mike vans was re-pressed (pun intended) to serve as Safety and Instruction Director, a position he accepted without reservation. Mike has provided excellent instruction to many of us in the club and has shared his enthusiasm for sailing with the club at large. I am pleased to announce Mike s nomination to Commodore for Page 1 of 5
2017. Mike has been a stalwart for the club and the board for many sailing seasons. I know we will rely on his calm and confident leadership for the next season. Don Pippins has graciously agreed to fill the Safety and Instruction position for 2017. Barbara Cooper organized all of our social events this year with her warm and friendly style. She will continue as Vice-Commodore next season. Special kudos to Barbara who has become our resident design maven. Don t forget the Haul-out lunch at the end of the month! Our secretary, Nancy Martin, has very ably kept us connected. Nancy has been so efficient and faithful to her club duties. I fear I have delayed at least a couple of newsletters as she patiently waited for my article. We have all enjoyed Nancy s photos that have dotted her newsletter. Happily, she will continue as secretary in the coming season. Steve Constable and the boat captains have kept our fleet in great shape all season. Steve brought his engineering skills, his drive for perfection and his leadership to the fleet post. I am so pleased that he has agreed to continue in that role another year. d Ryan and the property team have made major improvements to our real estate over the past years. I always see something refreshed, painted, repaired, redesigned, etc. We have new windows, railings, a storm door, and gateposts. We thank d for his cheerful management of all the tasks necessary to keep our property in tip-top shape. We are lucky to have d lead the property team another season. Racing continued to be a strong component of our club activities. This year the weather was VRY uncooperative for our avid racers. No wind, too much wind, high seas- they saw it all on Saturday mornings. Tilo reports the club championship is up for grabs as we complete the last 2 weeks of racing. Tilo has agreed to continue as Racing Director for another year- great news! Tilo will be ordering better racing weather for next sailing season. Bill Hanrahan- you rock! Most of the club does not see the many BORING hours that the Treasurer invests to keep the club s finances. Bill has upgraded ALL of our record keeping and has ably guided our financial decision making throughout the year. I am very relieved that Bill has agreed to remain as Treasurer for another year. By the way, all of the above new board members are nominations, and are subject to approval at our annual business meeting on November 12, which I hope you can attend. Remember the OLD SALT award goes to the sailor who has the most sails this season. I have yet to collect the metrics... there is still time to challenge Donna Powell, the 2015 OLD SALT award winner. Fleet Haul-Out Haul-out is just around the corner, Saturday October 29th. Sailors are busy as bees right now trying to squeeze the last bit of sailing out of the season, but all good things must end. Your help is needed for Haul-out. We are starting at a very leisurely 9 a.m. (aim to be there at 8:30) this year due to the tides showing up later than in years past. We should be able to wrap by between noon and 1 pm, at which point the greatly anticipated Haul-out Lunch begins. Here s the general plan for the morning: With the exception of newly signed members from late this year, you ve all been assigned to a Committee/Task Team or crew for a boat. If you can t remember your assignment, go to the Fleet tab on the NCSC web page and click on the first link on the left side of the page. If you aren t listed there (e.g. a new member) or are internet challenged, just show up to the Club House or Beach by 8:30 a.m. on October 29th and report to the Fleet, Beach or Barn Captain (see explanations of the exalted positions below). They re the frazzled looking ones if you can t recognize them, ask around and someone will point them out to you. Please listen to them and help them out, especially if you find that your task team s work is done and you ve nothing to do. There is a lot of stray work that needs to be done and not all teams get fully staffed on Haul-out Day, so help out where you can. The frazzled looking guy with unshaven stubble on his face (but otherwise with almost no hair) guzzling multiple cups of coffee and running around wildly is me, the Fleet Captain. That s just how being in charge of coordinating cats looks. Take pity and try to listen if I speak something semi-intelligible to you. I m trying to move things along and the wires in the brain get overheated... There are two positions that are critical for success of Haul-out that aren t shown on the Committee assignment sheet on the web: Beach Captain (Patti Parziale) and Yard Captain (Cathy Thompson). These two will be coordinating activities riverside and landside. Keep in mind that excluding major foul weather (hurricanes, etc.), Haul-out occurs rain or shine and in any case, some work (like moorings, for which any volunteer is warmly welcomed!) results in folks actually getting wet. So dress warmly, bring extra dry clothes, and don t forget your wet gear, mud boots, wet suits or whatever keeps you dry and happy (excluding martinis). Page 4 of 5
