Well, another year has come and gone. December 21, 2012 passed and the world did not end. Since it didn t end, I guess I d better get it in gear and get some things done. I had been putting off doing some things, like my year end paper work, because I didn t want to waste time doing something I wouldn t need. Now I m behind and trying to get caught up. So, I need to move forward. Forward! This is a word that you will be hearing from me a little more often this year, as this is what I would like to see Chapter L do. Move Forward! Some changes will be happening around the Chapter soon. The New Year brings some new officers. Some will move to different positions, and some will remain in their old positions. All will be working hard to serve all of you, the Members. I will be making an announcement at the next gathering on January 7 th that will involve all Chapter members. It has to do with a challenge I will make to you all. A challenge that I, and some of my staff think we can achieve. It will take a team effort, but it will be very rewarding when achieved. One part of this challenge will require the Chapter to RIDE!!!! Also at the gathering, we will be setting a date and location for a Ride Calendar Meeting. We have quite a few events already scheduled, but we could always use more. We will need to set a date for our Fundraiser at that time too. We managed to squeeze in an event or two in December. We had a wonderful Multi-Chapter Christmas Party on December 8 th. A large crowd enjoyed some good food, great friends, a little snow for mood, and some very nice entertainment for Chapter L member, Laura Hudson, and her singing group Deja Vu. I hope everyone had a good time! I
know the committee worked hard to put this together, and are already working on next year s even bigger event. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who brought Toys for Tots gifts. We had a van full again this year. We also scheduled a dinner ride this month. We don t usually do one in December due to the holiday schedule, but decided to try adding one this year. We had a good group of folks sign up, but the attendance was limited on that night due to some inclement weather. We ll have to see if we want to try it again next year. January will be the beginning of a busy year. Our first Multi Chapter event of the year is the Bowling Event on January 12 th. More information can be found later in this newsletter. We have a Dinner Ride on January 16 th that needs a host. In fact we have a few Dinner Rides on the list that need a host. The Annual District Officers meeting is on January 26 th, located downstairs at the Clements Community Center. All members are welcome. Please let me know if you are coming so we can get a head count. Looking forward (there s that word again) to seeing everyone at the next gathering. Until later..ride Safe.. Always. It s the Small Things by Robert King, Rider Educator If you are reading this you survived 12-21-12 and we must continue to do the things survivors do, pay taxes, bills, and do our preventive maintenance. Here we are moving into the third fictitious month of motorcycle hibernation this year. This is a good time to give the little things some attention before motorcycle season starts to get into full swing and all you think about is riding and searching for a Dairy Queen. I can bet that most of you have the right equipment on your bikes but have not checked it in over a year. and see what you have and make a determination on what you should replace. Since you can t check the bandages until they re used, spend a little money for fresh bandages and ointments so that your kit is in good shape for the riding season. The next piece of equipment is your motorcycles the tool kit. Your tool kit is your bike first aid kit and is just as important. It may save you from being stranded or injured and it also requires periodic checks to make sure you still have all the proper tools and supplies on hand. It is also a good time to make sure that everything works and it is not corroded. The first important item is your first aid kit. You would be surprised at how time flies since you bought your first aid kit and it has just been sitting in your trunk cooking in the hot sun. First aid kits have adhesive bandages and ointments that have a shelf life and do not have the ability to stand up to extreme temperatures, so I recommend that you open up your first aid kit check 2 of 5
Check that tire repair kit some of them have adhesive glue in a tube that is sealed. You would be surprised to know that that glue in the tube may seem good because it is sealed tube but it also is affected by time and temperature. For about 5 bucks get a new tube of glue and replace that old one. Don t forget that portable air compressor to make sure it still works. The final pieces of equipment to check are your riding gear. Check your jackets to make sure all the seams are still sewn, your zippers zip, your gloves are still in good condition, you still have soles on your boots, and your helmets are in perfect working condition. Rider Education Levels Program (reprinted from October 2012) by Bob King, Rider Educator GWRRA s Rider Education Levels Program is a great way to make a commitment to riding safely and obtaining education.
