Thanks to Rick Thompson, Alabama State Hoop Shoot director, for conducting an outstand -ing Hoop Shoot contest. Special thanks to all the members of our Lodge who traveled to Bessemer to help officiate the contest. A great Hoop Shoot contest needs the support of a Mike Kessler Exalted Ruler sponsoring Lodge. Thanks to Charles King, ER, and the entire Bessemer Lodge for your support in behind scenes. Congratulations to the new officers of the Lodge for 2017-2018. Thank you for giving of your time and talents to ensure the continued success of our Lodge in the future. DECATUR EMBLEM CLUB 127 Pictured above are our Emblem President of 127, Nancy Morgan and her husband Jim Morgan. They were caught having fun at the Elk s Lodge Valentine s Dance. The Emblem silent auction at the party, and custom photos earned $500.00, all for charity. Accident Prevention March 2017 It s a sticky situation when I write about something tacky! During my monthly safety inspection of the Lodge, I ve discovered once again that band aides have disappeared from the first aide stations in the Lodge. I can think of 2 (TWO) possible causes- either someone is taking them to be used elsewhere or there are a whole lot of unreported injuries requiring band aides. Let me remind the person using (or taking) these band aides for other than their intended use- you are taking money out of my pocket! First aide stations are required for a reason- minor injuries. If anyone is injured requiring the use of a band aideplease report it to the bartender or the House Committee person in charge. Don t be a band-it for band aides! Safety is everyone s responsibility- protect fellow Elks and guests by using wet floor signs and don t block exits and passageways. Remember that the next injury could be yours. I hope not! I want to put out a big shout out to our friends from down town. I have noted that they use the wet floor signs when they mop the kitchen- and that by keeping the floor in the kitchen clean, they prevent slips and falls due to spills. Thanks guys!! (if you enjoy their cooking skills, I encourage you to personally thank them and tip them. As you get to know them, you will find that they are really nice. Part of their experience at our Lodge involves interaction with normal people - so we need to be good role models to them! This gives them a better chance of making it once they are released.) Don R Dickens Safety Professional Greetings: We had a busy month for February. We had a lovely time at the Valentine Dance. Thanks to the Elks for allowing us to participate. Also, thanks to those who came on Friday and helped decorate the Lodge for the Dance. If you missed it, you missed a great time. The Band was wonderful to listen to, even if you don't dance The meal was great. Several people volunteered and worked hard to make the evening special. We were honored to have Susan Franklin, the President of the Alabama Association of Emblem Clubs and her Marshal, Donna King, as our guests. What sweet people! The Elks and Emblem participated in the "Have a Heart" blood drive on the same day as the dance. We collected 12 units of blood, with 14 attempting to give. This means we helped save 12 lives. Thanks to those who gave. As usual, volunteers are needed for bingo. This is a big fund raiser for Emblem, along with the Rotary Breakfast function. It takes all of us working together to get the job done. Thanks again to the Boys from Downtown, for all their hard work. The Emblem year is coming to an end. We will be installing new officers on March 12, at 1:00 PM, here at the Lodge. The installation will be - Nancy Morgan, Kessler, Emblem President Pres. handled by the Supreme President of Emblem Clubs, Marty Lynch and her Marshal, Paulette Thompson. It is an honor to have them with us. Thanks to Cari Johnson, for organizing the Installation at the lodge. The new president for Decatur Emblem Club is Lynn Easterwood. She is very excited about her time as President. I know she will do an outstanding job. I offer heartfelt congratulations to her and to her slate of officers. They will have a successful year, if you give her the same level of participation that you gave me. I can never thank you enough for all you did to make this year a success. Emblem Love, Nancy We re all Irish on St. Patrick s Day! Page 3
