SASP FAQ s Is the Scholastic Pistol Program (SPP) going away? No, SPP is not going away. In fact we are re-branding the program and adding a.22 lr rifle component that will give more opportunities for our teams to participate and compete. Our new name is the Scholastic Action Shooting Program. Why Join Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP)? The SASP is a National Youth Shooting Program focused on Team! There is no room for the win at all cost attitude. Much like football, baseball, basketball and track, we help build school teams and conferences across the country and have been doing this since 2012 when it started under the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF). We have athletes and coaches from all across the country participating in our program. Our teams are led by certified coaches and we carry a 5 million dollar Liability policy on ALL of our members! Please see the list below of all the opportunities we offer our teams, athletes, and coaches! $5,000,000 Liability Policy that can include the school as an also insured. COMPLETE Background checks! The SASP does a comprehensive background check on every coach! Coach Training.most of the SASP coaches are certified Level I NRA/USAS/CMP Pistol Coaches Shooting year that runs from September 1 through August 31. Athletes beginning in Grades 6-12 and college students can participate in our pistol program. Our rifle program begins with athletes in Grades 5 and under and continues through college like our pistol program. (Depending on federal, state and local range requirements.) Local, State, Regional, National and Virtual Match Championships take place. The SASP is the official youth shooting program to Team USA and USA Shooting. Junior Olympic Development Camps (JODCs). Team savings accounts through the Midway USA Foundation.and Endowment funds that we deposit. Raffle, new team start-up packages, banquet packages available through us which help teams raise funds. Industry sponsored special gun prices for SASP teams and athletes. Industry sponsored special ammo prices for SASP teams and athletes. A registration and scoring system for all of our teams and coaches to use and track athletes. The SASP gives out scholarships to its athletes graduating from high school. Prizes! SASP gives guns at our national championships! Partnerships with Conservation groups like Pheasants Forever and the NWTF help support local teams. And much, much more.. What shooting disciplines does Scholastic Action Shooting Program use? Our discipline is speed shooting on steel targets, which is unique to our program, combining the best features of other disciplines to allow athletes to practice and participate in exciting matches with less specialized equipment.

If we already shoot SPP can we shoot rifle? You sure can. We know not all teams will want to shoot pistol and not all teams will want to shoot rifles. Then we have teams that will want to compete in both disciplines. If we are already paid members through the current SPP target year, do we have to pay again? No, if you and your team have already paid your 2015-2016 yearly membership dues, you are good. This is similar to SCTP where you can shoot trap, skeet, and sporting clays under your one yearly membership dues. What is the format for the rifle shooting? The same stages (Focus, Go Fast, In & Out, and Speed Trap) and same shooting distances will be used in the rifle program. Will there be match fees associated with shooting rifle? If a team is just shooting pistol or rifle, there will be single match fee. If a team is shooting both pistol and rifle, there will be a combination match fee. What types of matches are available to athletes? Teams can compete in matches that are held locally, state, regionally, and nationally, plus we have a virtual match series that runs year-round. We will be working with our national, regional, state and local matches to incorporate the rifle program into as many matches as possible. We will also have a virtual match series for the rifle program. How is a team started? It all starts with a person volunteering to serve as head coach, plus at least four athletes. The head coach then goes to our website to register the team and the team completes the needed paperwork. What are the requirements for becoming a head coach? The head coach must be at least 21 years, pass a background check, take an online coach s course, and pay a small fee. You can see the full requirements in the General Guidelines for SSSF Volunteer Positions. Who qualifies as an adult volunteer for the program? Any person working closely with athletes, even if not on the line coaching for example, a team photographer. Where do we shoot? A partnership with a local gun club is an important early step in this process. Is school affiliation required? No, school affiliation is not required, but it is a good way to tie your team to the community and possibly have some additional community support.

How old does someone have to be to participate? Rookie division (rifle only) is for athletes in Grades 5 and under Intermediate division is for athletes in Grades 6-8 Senior division is for athletes in Grades 9-12 Collegiate division if for anyone who is enrolled as a full-time college student How many shooters can be on our team? The minimum squad is four (4) shooters. Teams must have at least one full squad to become an officially recognized SASP team. There is no upper limit to the number of members on a team and no limit to the number of squads a team may field. What equipment do need to start a team? It s an easy sport to learn and the material list is fairly simple. The following is a basic needs list to start a team. At least one handgun (Centerfire or Rimfire) or at least one.22lr rifle (box-fed magazine) Steel Targets the 4 SASP stage designs require a configuration of 18 x24 rectangles, 10 inch round, and 12 inch round plates Timer to keep scores Ear and eye protection Paint (flat white, red, black) o Flat white is used to paint the face of the target plates o Red is used to paint the base of the stop plate o Black is used to paint the base of the 4 bang plates Measuring tape Gun range with at least one bay with a depth of at least 25 yards Ammunition What s the best way to recruit new members? The easiest way is to host an SASP demo. Contact a SASP staff member for assistance. These events are easy to set-up and run and takes only a minimum of time and effort by a club. It is suggested that you use the stage, Go Fast which is the easiest and fastest of the stages. If you expect to have a good number of more experienced shooters, you can set up Speed Trap as a second stage. It only takes a few people to run the event, one person handling registration (name, contact info, including email address) and a least two Range Officers. The only equipment needed (besides targets) is a table at the shooters box, a table for ammunition and extra magazines and a Stock handgun and a.22lr rifle. For a complete list of centerfire pistols that qualify see the IDPA Stock Service Pistol and Stock Service Revolver at: http://members.idpa.com/content/rules/g0hunysc.eoc.pdf.) It is recommended that you use at least five or six magazines so you ll always have a fresh magazine so your new shooters don t have to wait. Load each magazine with 10 rounds. Also to keep things moving along, don t paint the targets in between shooters; this is not necessary for this type of event, only paint when needed which could be every 15-20 shooters. After the event, using the names you gathered at registration, follow up with a call or email to see how they like shooting SASP and if they would like to join an SASP team.

When to Schedule a SASP Demo Scheduling a SASP event will of course depend on time/space availability at your club. If your club or range is already shooting some type of action pistol, hosting a SASP demo before or after the match is a good time since you already have people on hand that understand shooting timed to help. If a club or range is new to SASP, a demo event is a good time to recruit both adult and youth shooters to the sport. Another good time is to work with your state wildlife agency and tie in with one of their Day at the Range events. If you live in states that have a Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP), which SASP is modeled after, contact the SCTP state director or local coach and inquire about setting up a demo during one of their shoots or state championships. How do I learn more about the Scholastic Action Shooting Program? The SASP is very simple to get started in. With the help of generous industry sponsors, the SSSF has produced a 2 hour video series that explains all aspects of the program in great detail. This video series will be available in late January to stream for free and for purchase as a DVD through our online store. We suggest you watch the entire video and then follow up with us with specific questions on how to get started. Please watch our website subscribe to our Range Time newsletter distribution list for more details on the video. You can be part of any and all other youth programs, the SASP does not discriminate! We hope that you will consider being part of one of the largest youth shooting sports programs in the world, the Scholastic Action Shooting Program! We welcome you to contact us with any questions you might have! Please check out some of our sponsors on the following page.
