Continental Dance Club September, 2018 Volume 58, Number 9 Notes from the Board Columnist: Dave Hinderliter Hello, CDC members! I have to say August is one of my favorite months. The Continental Dance Club had its annual Indiana State Fair dance on August 11th and we had a record showing of members who took advantage of the free fair entry and the chance to hoof it up. Dennis Dworski was our DJ while wife Bess served as emcee they always do a great job for us. Jeronimo Casanova and Barb Newsom danced a very nice Rumba routine, and Neal Behrle and Connie Hatherill made a 4-minute Hustle look easy. The Continettes routine consisted of three patriotic numbers, one right after the other and all very entertaining (even the batons). We had the stage for two whole hours, and were delighted when some audience members joined us on stage. I think we had 54 members join us. Several other members were in Ft. Wayne with the Special Olympics dancers, and were unable to join in our fun. The 4th week in August marked our annual Indiana Roof Night. It is always a visual treat to see everyone dressed to the 9s. If you have never been to the Indiana Roof, you owe it to yourself to go at least once to appreciate some of the fine architecture and craftsmanship from back in the early 1900s. After you are through looking up and around in awe, you ll have the whole evening to enjoy the big band music and dance, dance, dance. Our board member Rhoda has taken it upon herself to get everyone to become just a little smarter when it comes to knowing other members. Last month Rhoda s Yellow Quiz had eight entries that qualified for a prize. So, read that newsletter cover to cover, and you might be the next big winner. Sunday September 16th is our next big event, The 50s Party. Tanya and her helpers always do a great job in decorating and setting out the goodies. The best two ways to show Tanya and her team that we appreciate their efforts would be to bring a dish to share and to dress the part. You have my permission to roll up your sleeves and your pant legs, and let s all boogie the night away in fine 50s style. (Go ahead, take a chance, ask me to dance!) Continental Dance Club September, 2018 Volume 58, Number 9 WANTED NEWSLETTER EDITOR In 2012, Pat Ralston, our current newletter editor, agreed to serve for 2 years with putting together the CDC Newsletter. Fast forward 6 years later and Pat is still designing and preparing our newsletter for print and distribution. We have just been informed that Pat is moving out of state to start a new adventure and CDC needs to find her replacement. You don t have to write the articles, you just need to put them in a newsletter template that can be turned into a PDF. If you are interested in assuming this responsibility, please contact Dave Hinderliter at davehinder55@gmail.com or 317-491-2794 as soon as possible. We need to fill this position while Pat is still here so that she can help out with the training. Thanks. Continental Dance Club MY CDC T ROY September, 2018 Volume 58, Number 9 AND O LYMPIA We hope to embrace the grace, poise, and sophistication that ballroom dancing provides us, and hope to spread that same enthusiasm to others, says Olympia Harris. In fact, both Olympia and husband Troy use their profession as teachers (she, Spanish; he, science) to pass on the joy of dancing to their students at Tri-West Middle School and High School. Over the past five years, Olympia and Troy have found that dancing benefits them as a couple, creating intimacy, strengthening trust, and improving mental wellness. Often, on the Sunday nights they are able to attend the dance at CDC, you ll see them leaving early to prepare for the start and the stress - of the school week. HARRIS Cha-cha is the couple s favorite dance; both enjoy its rhythm, musical style and showmanship. Asked to name their favorite dance memories, Troy and Olympia name their experience as Special Olympics mentors, working to prepare their partners for the dance sport competitions in July and August. In 2017, Olympia is proud to report, she and her Special Olympics partner Mikayla were named Silver Medalist; the pair won Gold in the 2018 event. At the recent 2018 Ballroom Bash, Troy and Olympia performed the tango, entertaining the audience with a fiery display of very intimate physical and mental wellness! We re proud of our CDC members Troy and Olympia for getting their and their students - groove on with ballroom dancing! Interviewed by board member Rhoda Israelov Olympia and Mikayla Olympia and Troy doing the tango Troy and Special Olympian partner page 6
