Senior guard and captain Amani Tatum has averaged 13.1 points, 4.1 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game, as well. Grimme and Tatum were each named to the MAAC preseason second team this year. Manhattan currently ranks third in the MAAC for scoring defense at 62.2 points per game, and third in three-point field goal percentage at 31.2. The Jaspers are first in rebounding defense at 33.5 per game and third in steals, averaging 7.8 per contest. The Jaspers were picked to finish 10th in the MAAC preseason poll. PREVIOUS OUTING The Jaspers lost to Niagara 65-64 in the first meeting of the teams this season. Up one with 34 seconds left to play, Manhattan was unable to convert in its final possession, giving the ball back to Niagara with just under two seconds on the clock. The Purple Eagles inbounded to leading-scorer Victoria Rampado, who was fouled shooting a three by Manhattan freshman Courtney Warley with just 0.4 on the clock. After missing the first free throw, Rampado tied the game at 64-64 on the second and sank the third, giving the Purple Eagles a one-point lead. Though the Jaspers were able to run a quick inbound play, they were unable to get a shot off before the horn, giving Niagara the onepoint victory at home. ABOUT THE GAELS At 0-16, Iona has surpassed its longest losing streak since 2004-05. The team currently holds the longest winless streak to begin a season in program history. An extremely young team, 10 of Iona s 13 roster spots are filled by underclassmen, the highest percentage (76.9) in the MAAC. Freshman Toyosi Abiola earned her seventh MAAC Rookie of the Week accolade on January 15, and she ranks top-10 in the MAAC in five different statistical categories: scoring, free-throw percentage, three-point field goal percentage, three-point field goals made, and minutes played, where she ranks number one, averaging 35.5 minutes per game. Iona was picked to finish third in the league in the MAAC s preseason poll. Junior guard Alexis Lewis, who became the 27th player in Iona history to surpass the 1,000 career-point plateau on January 6 against Quinnipiac, was also named to the MAAC s preseason first team. LAST MEETING The Jaspers fell to Iona 76-62 at home in the teams last meeting on January 20, 2017. Kayla Grimme tallied what was then a career-high 21 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in 39 minutes of action. With the win, the Gaels swept the 2016-17 season series between the two teams. SERIES HISTORY Manhattan leads the all-time series against Iona 45-31. The last time the Jaspers defeated the Gaels was January 18, 2016, when Manhattan came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat Iona 63-56.

A 1999 graduate of Minnesota-Morris, she brings nearly two decades of collegiate coaching experience to Riverdale. After beginning her career as a graduate assistant at North Dakota State from 2000-02, Vulin spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Sacred Heart from 2002-08. She was on the staff at Villanova for seven seasons (2008-15) before spending the 2015-16 campaign as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Virginia Tech. Vulin won her first game as a head coach against Holy Cross, defeating the Crusaders 60-56 on November 11, 2016 at home. She won her first MAAC game against Siena on December 30, 2016, when the Jaspers defeated the Saints 68-66 in Riverdale. THE COACHING STAFF Vulin s staff consists of Assistant Coaches Sahar Nusseibeh, Allie Bassetti, and Callan Taylor, who are all in their second season on the Manhattan College staff. The director of women s basketball operations is Rena Wakama. Nusseibeh, who also serves as recruiting coordinator, joined Manhattan after three seasons as an assistant at Bowling Green. Bassetti served as the director of basketball operations at American from 2013-16. Taylor, the 2011-12 NEC player of the year at Sacred Heart, played basketball professionally overseas before arriving in Riverdale. In her first year at Manhattan, she served as director of basketball operations. Taking over for Taylor, Wakama is in her first season with the Jaspers. A 2014 graduate of Western Carolina, Wakama played professional basketball, making stops in the United Kingdom and the FIBA African Basketball League. She was a member of the Senior Nigerian National Team in September of 2015. LEARNING FROM THE CORPS This past May, Assistant Coach Sahar Nusseibeh took part in the U.S. Marine Corps Coaches Leadership Workshop in Quantico, VA. The three-day, invitation-only workshop is designed to teach small-unit leadership. Thirty assistant college basketball coaches from around the country took in leadership lectures and participated in physical training, like obstacle courses and martial arts. In 2016, Nusseibeh was named to the inaugural Women s Basketball Coaches Association s (WBCA) Thirty Under 30 list, which recognizes the top 30 up-andcoming coaches age 30 or younger at all levels of the game. The Jaspers team motto playgreen is a concept developed by Head Coach Heather Vulin. For the team, playgreen is a commitment to the pursuit of excellence. Vulin expects her players to have that mindset every day, as they play for their teammates, for their program, and to represent Manhattan College at a championship level. The Jaspers use on all of the team s social media channels. RETURNING TALENT Manhattan returned all of its top four scorers from the 2016-17 season: seniors Kayla Grimme (14.6 ppg), Amani Tatum (10 ppg), Mikki Gui-

AYE, CAPTAIN Senior guard Amani Tatum has been the epitome of consistency for the Jaspers since her arrival in Riverdale. Tatum serves as captain of the team for the third consecutive year. She started all 24 games last season in the point guard position, and has started all 17 games for the Jaspers this year. She was the 2015-16 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, and the first Jasper ever to receive that award. On December 28, she scored a career-high 28 points against Saint Peter s, including shooting 4-8 from beyond the three-point line. Tatum currently ranks 14th among Division I players in three-point field goal percentage (45.6); in the past two games, she went for 10-18 from behind the arc. Tatum also leads the MAAC in this category, as well as steals (48) and steals per game (2.8). Tatum is second in the league in assists (70) and assists per game (4.1). She is 13 assists away from earning 300 during her time at Manhattan. GRIMME GETS IT DONE Senior center Kayla Grimme nabbed her 1,000th career point in the first half of the Jaspers November 15 game against Sacred Heart. She now ranks ninth on the Jaspers all-time scoring list at 1,223 points. Current Manhattan Athletic Director Marianne Reilly is in eighth place with 1,305, and Manhattan s leading scorer is Sheila Tighe (1980-84) with 2,412 career points. Grimme currently has 820 rebounds for her career and is fifth on the all-time list, just three away from tying Stacey Jack, who played from 1983-87. Grimme is one of just five other Manhattan women s basketball players to reach both the 1,200-point and 800-rebound thresholds in their careers. The others are: all-time leading rebounder Rosalee Mason (1,875 points, 1,217 rebounds), Gina Somma (1,838 points, 819 rebounds), Jack (1,665 points, 823 rebounds), and Reilly (1,305 points, 860 rebounds). Grimme became the program s all-time leader in blocks on January 27, 2017, when she got her 149th block against Rider. She has 196 for her career. Adding to her on-court successes, Grimme was named the MAAC Player of the Week on November 20. She was also named to the Cal Classic all-tournament team on November 25. She is currently fifth in the MAAC in scoring (14.7) per game and second in offensive rebounding, with 3.1 per contest. MEET THE NEWCOMERS Manhattan College welcomed five freshmen players for the 2017-18 season. Guard Lynette Taitt, who made her first collegiate start against Stony Brook, scored over 1,000 points during her playing career at Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn, NY. Mäkelä made her first collegiate start against St. Francis Brooklyn on November 18. Guard Lizahya Morgan won three state championships at Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, CT, and was named first team allstate as a senior. She led the state of Connecticut with 6.7 assists per game in 2015-16. Morgan made her first collegiate start against UVA on December 21 and hit a career-high 13 points against Niagara on January 13. Guard/forward Nyala Pendergrass helped St. Rose High School in Belmar, NJ win a pair of state championships. She averaged 8.3 rebounds per game as a junior. Center Courtney Warley, who made her first collegiate start against LIU Brooklyn on December 16, tallied over 1,000 points in her high school career, during which she played at Bayard Rustin High School in West Chester, PA, before transferring to Bishop Shanahan High School in Downington, PA. She helped Rustin win the first state playoff game in program history and was also a member of division and league championship teams at Bishop Shanahan. Warley was an ESPN Top 100 recruit and earned all-league, and all-area recognition. She was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on December 17 after posting 14 points and 12 rebounds against LIU Brooklyn. READY TO PLAY Sophomore center Alex Smith, a Bronx native, is eligible to play this season after sitting out the 2016-17 campaign under NCAA transfer rules. Smith spent the 2015-16 season at Middle Tennessee State. In high school, she was named a Mayor s Cup All-Star and first team all-new York City. She averaged a double-double (15 ppg, 14 rpg) during her senior season at Murry Bergtraum High School and played for the New York Gauchos travel team. She recorded a season-high 10 points on December 16 against LIU Brooklyn, and again at UVA on December 21. INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR Manhattan College rounds out its roster with three international players. Returning sophomore forward Julie Høier came to Riverdale by way of Aabyoej, Denmark, and was the first Danish player in program history, as well as the first international player to suit up for the Jaspers since Serra Sangar (Turkey) in 2004-05. Last year, Høier appeared in Manhattan s first 19 contests and started 12 games before missing the rest of the season with an injury. She averaged 3.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per outing. Freshman guard Sini Mäkelä hails from Helsinki, Finland, where she attended Mäkelänrinne Sports High. Redshirt-junior Tuuli Menna also comes to Riverdale from Helsinki and attended Mäkelänrinne. Menna transferred to Manhattan College after two seasons at the University of Richmond. She made 72 appearances for the Finnish National Team at the Under-16, Under-18, and senior levels and led Finland in scoring (14.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.9 rpg) in 2012-13. Menna will be eligible to play next season.

LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER Freshman guard Sini Mäkelä played for the Finnish Under-16 and Under-18 National Teams from 2013-15. Her mother, Lea Hakala, played basketball at Maryland and was later captain of the Finnish National Team. She appeared in more than 250 international games and competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. 2017-18 MAAC Standings* MAAC Overall Quinnipiac 7-0 13-5 Marist 4-1 8-9 Fairfield 4-2 7-10 Niagara 4-2 7-10 Manhattan 3-3 6-11 Rider 3-3 6-11 Monmouth 2-2 4-11 Siena 2-4 7-10 Canisius 2-4 4-13 Saint Peter s 0-5 3-13 Iona 0-5 0-16 *as of 1/15/18 Upcoming MAAC Schedule Thursday, January 18 Rider vs. Niagara, 11:00 a.m. Monmouth vs. Quinnipiac, 11:30 a.m. Saint Peter s vs. Canisius, 5 p.m. Siena vs. Marist, 5 p.m. Manhattan vs. Iona, 7 p.m. Saturday, January 20 Saint Peter s vs. Niagara, 1 p.m. Iona vs. Siena, 1 p.m. Monmouth vs. Canisius, 2 p.m. Quinnipiac vs. Fairfield, 2 p.m. Sunday, January 21 Marist vs. Rider, 2 p.m. Monday, January 22 Monmouth vs. Iona, 7 p.m. Siena vs. Fairfield, 7 p.m. ALL IN THE FAMILY For senior guard Taylor Williams, high-level athleticism is in her blood. Her cousin Carla McGhee was a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic women s basketball team in 1996. Another cousin, Ellis Burks, played Major League Baseball for 18 years, primarily for the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies. AIN T OVER TIL IT S OVER(TIME) The Jaspers have played 120 games without going into overtime, one of the longest active non-overtime streaks in Division I women s basketball. Manhattan last played an overtime game nearly four years ago on January 23, 2014, losing to Niagara 71-67 in single OT at Draddy Gymnasium (thanks to Jeff Hoffman of the University of Washington for this stat). MAAC TOURNAMENT This season s MAAC Tournament will once again take place at the Times Union Center in Albany from March 1-5, 2018. This is the fourth year in a row that the championship has been hosted at this site, and the 19th time Albany has hosted the event. After the first-round games on Thursday, March 1, the quarterfinals will be split among two days. The semifinals are set for Sunday, March 4, while the MAAC Championship Game will be nationally televised on ESPNU on Monday, March 5. LOOK WHO S 40 This year, the Jaspers celebrate the 40th season of women s varsity basketball at Manhattan College. What started as a club sport in 1975, two years after women were admitted to Manhattan, quickly caught on because of early successes: During the 1977-78 season, the women s basketball team won the league championship. At the end of the season, former athletic director Ken Norton promoted the team to varsity status for the 1978-79 campaign. The program reached its first MAAC Championship game in 1983, losing to Saint Peter s 59-51. Manhattan College won its first MAAC Championship in 1987, beating Holy Cross 70-64. TREND SETTER Manhattan College Director of Athletics Marianne Reilly was the Jaspers first-ever scholarship women s basketball player. She was also the first player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, finishing her career with 1,305 points. In 1992, Reilly became the first female inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame. HONOR ROLL Former Manhattan women s basketball player Donna Seybold was inducted into the MAAC Honor Roll this past September at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. She is one of three student-athletes in program history to play on two MAAC Championship teams (1987 and 1990), and the only player to score in two NCAA Tourna-

She was the fifth 1,000-point scorer in program history and finished her career with 1,217 points. Seybold was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003. WHAT S A JASPER? Manhattan is the only athletic program in Division I with the Jaspers nickname. The unique moniker honors one of Manhattan s most memorable figures, Brother Jasper of Mary, F.S.C. Brother Jasper served Manhattan College in the late 1800s and was the first coach of Manhattan s baseball team. He is also credited as the creator of the seventh-inning stretch, which has become a time-honored tradition at ballparks across the country. During a game in the 1880s, Brother Jasper noticed students getting restless in the middle of the seventh inning of a close game, so he called timeout and told the students to stand up a stretch for a few minutes before resuming the game. Since Manhattan regularly played the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds in the 1880s and into the 1890s, the tradition spread into the major leagues. Starting Lineups By Game This is Manhattan s 18th game of the 2017-18 season. The Jaspers have used seven different starting combinations, with 10 players making at least one start.
