C.A.T.C. NEWS July 2014 THE CAROLINA ANTIQUE TACKLE COLLECTORS NEWSLETTER VOL XVII NUMBER 3 President s Message First of all, before I forget... we need to thank Joe and Liz Yates for coming through and hosting the Savannah show in May. I think all that participated in early room trading were excited about some of their finds and, of course, some items that were sold. I hope everyone had a great time. I know I did, especially at the members auction while bidding against Ricky Cox in units of pennies, nickels, and dimes. Savannah is a great town with tons of history and wonderful food. We enjoyed meeting the new members that joined and participated in the Savannah show. Lets don't forget our friends from the FATC that drove up and joined us in Savannah. Thanks to all who made the drive, it was good to see all my fellow club members and meeting some new members that have joined the CATC. Savannah Recap The CATC Spring Show was held on May 16-18, 2014 in Savannah, GA. The show was fairly small by recent CATC standards. Still, the Club added a good number of new members and the show was financially successful. Most in attendance took time to enjoy Savannah s history, hospitality, and fine food. John Yancey won an award for Best Reel Display. Unfortunately, John had to leave before the awards presentation and a picture is not available. Charlie Price won the Best Lure Award for his amazing display of frog lures. One of my favorite things at the show was I got to hold in my hand a "Haskell Minnow", a lure that very few people have ever seen. I 've been collecting for over 20 years and this was my first time seeing and holding this extremely rare lure. As you know, summer is here, and the heat is on!! If you can stand the heat.. those great finds are still out there at yards sales, flea markets, and antique malls and better yet, by word of mouth. Folks, don't look at the calendar, but November is not that far away till the fall CATC show at Myrtle Beach, SC. Contact the Springmaid Resort @ 866-764-8501 for room reservations. This show has always been a well attended event, so make sure you get your tables ASAP! Please contact Mr. Gene McIntyre for table reservations at 910-395-4424 or email Gene at WilmEyeSpy@aol.com. This will be the 6th annual show at Myrtle Beach, Nov. 21-23 and I would suspect that room trading will be great as usual and the show will be well attended, and hopefully some great items from the street. A show flyer is in the back of this newsletter and also available on the CATC website. Joe Damron won the Best of Show Award for his display of Mike Estep lures. Please remember Walt Maynard, as he is dealing with some health issues. Looking forward to seeing all the CATC members and hope our paths will cross before November. Don't forget.. Ricky Cox still owes T.D. $ 6.00 Hack Hensley

Best Wishes Many of the CATC Members at the Savannah show took time to sign Thinking of You / Best Wishes cards to Bob Dennis and Walt Maynard, neither of whom were able to attend. Bob sent a wish I could be there Best Wishes card of his own to the CATC prior to the show. Walt continues to recover following the successful completion of treatments. He is hopeful that he will able to attend the show in Myrtle Beach in November. We hope so too! Keep both of these guys, and so many others, in your hearts. Carolina Antique Tackle Collectors Current Events By Steve Barrow ANOTHER Generous Donation by Bob Dennis - Most CATC members are aware that Life Member Bob Dennis made a donation of $500 to the club at the 2013 Fall Show in Myrtle Beach. But most are probably not aware that Bob made a second $500 donation prior to the Spring Show in Savannah, GA. This came at a time when the CATC Board was trying to figure out ways to improve the club s financial condition without adversely affecting members. Thanks again Bob, for all you have meant to the club and members over the past 23+ years!! CATC Directory and Dues - The CATC directory is published during the August timeframe, and covers all members whose dues have been paid by that time. If my antique computer will hold out for a few more months, we ll have a club directory again this year. The directory includes an alphabetical listing of members showing their contact information and collecting interests, an additional listing of members by state and city, contact information for club officers and directors, along with copies of the CATC mission statement, bylaws, and exhibit policies. If you have not yet paid your 2014 dues and would like for your information to appear in this year s directory, send a check for $20 (made out to CATC) to Steve Barrow at P.O. Box 487, Kittrell, NC, 27544. Please send dues to this address, not to the newsletter editor. Also, please examine your personal information in the current directory (purple cover) and contact me at stb647@embarqmail.com if you have any changes or corrections to your contact info (be sure to verify your email address) or collecting interests. Elections at 2014 Fall Show - Our Fall Show in Myrtle Beach will take place November 21-23, and the business meeting will include elections for the CATC Vice President and Directors. Elizabeth Yates is our current VP, and the directors are Jack Gallagher from SC, Bill Holbein from NC, and Harry Matthews representing all other states. Nominations for these officer positions can be made to any board member. The CATC Newsletter Needs Your Help!! - We publish an eight page newsletter quarterly, and need your input for articles and other items of interest. Our club has about 185 members, all of whom have collections, knowledge, stories, and pictures that would be entertaining and informative to the other members. Please consider sharing these by submitting information to Joe Yates, Newsletter Editor. It could be of a historical nature, favorite or recent field finds, experiences using old tackle, or any other subject relating to CATC s Mission: Enhance and promote the collection and preservation of antique fishing tackle and memorabilia. All submissions will be considered! CATC Bylaw Changes Voted In at Savannah Show Three club bylaw changes were discussed and voted upon by members during a business meeting at the Spring Show. All were approved. In regard to the election of Directors, it was decided we will continue to vote at the Fall Show on even numbered years, instead of sending out ballots in the US mail. For club newsletters, the bylaws will be changed to not require four per year, but instead allow the Board some latitude in determining the number, based upon the amount of information to be distributed, and financial condition of the club. In regard to auctions at our shows for items that come in off the street, the current bylaw language requires we charge a 10% seller s premium. The change voted in will allow the Board to determine the percentage. It is anticipated it will be 20% at the Fall Show in Myrtle Beach. Page 4

Myrtle Beach Update The Myrtle Beach show is going to be great again this year! Orvis will be giving away another fly fishing rod and reel. Orvis will also have discount coupons at the show and coupons for 2- free fly fishing lessons, which we will auction to the highest bidder. To all those that reserve one or more tables will be a free CATC Lanyard, no expense to the club! There are 45 tables sold to date. Hope to sell out all the tables this year!! Call all your fishing friends and invite them to the show. I have also had two people call about bringing tackle to the show to be auctioned. There will also be two nice lures for the club raffle. Hope to see all of you there! In case you just can t wait, you can keep up with the action by watching a live webcam on the Springmaid Resort website. Stephen M. Linkous Long time CATC Member Steve Linkous passed away on June 14, 2014. A native of the Hampton area of Virginia, he served his country during the Vietnam war. Steve operated an indoor environmental consulting business in Orlando, Florida. Steve was active in all of the lure clubs. He ran an antique fishing tackle shop at Renninger s in Mount Dora, Florida for a number of years and always enjoyed helping others with their collections. Steve also enjoyed fishing and looked forward to Fall trips to the northern NC Outer Banks in search of Stripers and Redfish. Steve will be missed by the many friends he made through the years!
