Cutten Fields Membership Information Package 2011 INTRODUCTION Located in the heart of downtown Guelph, Ontario, the Cutten Club blends outstanding tradition and superior service in a first-class private golf and tennis Club with a history of excellence and prominence in the community and surrounding area. Arthur W. Cutten, better known as the wheat king for the fortune he made from the staple, chose his hometown of Guelph for the setting of a pay-as-you-play golf course in 1928. Laid out along the Speed River on the Macdonald Farm property adjacent to the University of Guelph, the Club has taken considerable strides to preserve the tradition of the property. The original Macdonald farmhouse still stands and was once used by the Royal Canadian Air Force as the temporary Clubhouse during World War II. The course was designed by Charles Chick Evans, a well-known golf architect and former U.S. Amateur Golf Champion, and Stanley Thompson, Canada s own master golf course architect. Because of the knowledge and talent of both men, the Cutten Club was able to offer players a challenging yet enjoyable golf experience. After Mr. Cutten s death, Stanley Thompson purchased the Club in 1939 which was then called Cutten Fields but was casually known as the Cutten Club. Along with the pay-as-you-play category, he also began selling annual memberships, and thus the private nature of the Club was established. After the death of Mr. Thompson in 1953, the property was put up for sale and nearly faced a future of land development from the pressures of the growing city. However, a group of local industries purchased the Club in order to maintain the golf course and all its history. Since the addition of a tennis facility in 1985, the Club's membership has grown to become a vibrant golf and tennis operation. The University of Guelph remains the sole shareholder of the Guelph Golf and Recreation Club Ltd. As a result of a precedent-setting 40-year lease agreement with the University of Guelph, which was overwhelmingly endorsed by the membership, the Guelph Golf and Recreation Club Ltd. (old Cutten Club) proudly became the new not-for-profit, member-run Guelph Cutten Club on April 1, 2005. The Cutten Club now enjoys a new tradition that includes a recently renovated first-class private 18-hole golf course complemented by excellent practice facilities and lessons from CPGA-certified instructors; a top-notch tennis facility with four Har-Tru (clay) courts and lessons from certified tennis professionals; and an updated Clubhouse used as the venue for popular social events, exceptional dining/banquet amenities and incomparable conference/corporate facilities.
