NIAGARA S BEST DANCE CREW - RULES AND GUIDELINES There are some new changes this year* MONDAY, MAY 7 th, 2018 LOCATION: The Scotiabank Center Niagara Falls, Ont 1. Competition will be held MONDAY, MAY 7 th for BOTH Elementary and SECONDARY schools. A rehearsal hall and change room will be available for all crews/teams. Elementary Competition will begin at approx. 9:30 am We will try our best to have elementary completed by 2pm. Secondary Competition will begin at approx. 8:30am and will continue past school hours. - Last year we ran from 8:30am 6:30pm Elementary and secondary will be scheduled together throughout the day. 2. Please submit one entry form per routine being entered. All genres are accepted. 3. Categories will be separated by age (primary, junior/intermediate, secondary) and by genre with the exception of solos (which will be separated by grade and NOT by genre). 4. The number of solos, duets and trios entered will be limited per school to encourage team participation. Please see below. Guidelines GENRES: Jazz: Consists primarily of jazz technique. Tap: Must consist primarily of tap technique. Ballet: Classical ballet steps & movement. Pointe: Pointe toe technique in pointe shoes. Modern: Should demonstrate balance, extension, isolation & control, using modern styles. Lyrical: A combination of jazz and ballet. A routine which interprets the lyrics or musicality of a song. Usually set to ballad style music. Shows "clean, classic body lines" and solid "traditional" technique.
Contemporary: Strong ballet fundamentals with modern techniques utilizing strength, flexibility, alignment, breathe, contraction, suspension, tension and relaxation while emphasizing artistic expression and unique choreography. Musical Theatre: Must consist of one of the above dance forms and may contain lip synching - may portray a character. Please check our prop rule. Vocal: 50% song, 50% dance, no pre-recorded vocals during the song section. If a microphone is used the setup, MUST be pre-arranged with the technicians. There may be a charge for this technical service. Acro: Must consist of more than 5 acro tricks & gymnastic technique with dance moves, steps & choreography. Open: Must be a combination of any of the above categories with a maximum of 5 acro tricks. Hip Hop: A routine choreographed to urban music using free-style, hip-hop, funk or music video style dance. Ethnic: A routine of national origin. eg. Highland, Celtic, Bollywood etc. *There will be NO Improv category this year. 1. CATEGORIES: EXPERIENCED: 75% of the group take class at a dance studio outside of school. These dancers can be competitive or non-competitive. NEWBIE: 75% of dancers DO NOT take any dance classes or train in dance other than in their school dance program or team. Please use your professional judgement when placing students in this category. No dancers who have represented Team Canada, or who have won overall high scores for their studio should be participating in this category even if the rest of the group is 75% newbie. STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHY: Choreography of the routine is 100% completed by a student. The student can be the performer dancing the routine or simply the choreographer. **SPECIAL NEEDS: This category is dedicated to students who are in special needs programs. Student leaders are permitted to participate on stage with the dancers. 2. DIVISIONS: PRIMARY: Grade 1 3
JUNIOR/INTERMEDIATE: Grade 4 8 SECONDARY: Grade 9 12 SOLO: 1 dancer *** Secondary Schools - LIMIT - 2 solos PER grade PER school can be entered *** (Example: 2 Grade 9 experienced representatives and 2 Grade 9 newbie representatives) Soloists will be placed in grade specific and experience specific categories NOT by genre. ** There will be a wait list for any schools wishing to enter additional solos. These entries will be placed in the competition in order of registration. Please do not include waitlisted entries in your payment until you have been contacted. ** Elementary solos will still be categorized by genre and are allowed unlimited entries. DUET: 2 dancers TRIO: 3 dancers SMALL GROUP: 4-9 dancers LARGE GROUP: 10 15 dancers LINE: 16 24 dancers EXTENDED LINE: 25-34 dancers MEGA LINE: 35 or more dancers All schools can have unlimited group entries. Schools entering three or more groups will be eligible for the Best Dance Crew overall TEAM awards. 3. TIME LIMITS Solo 3minutes Duet/Trio 3 minutes Groups 4 minutes Mega Line 5 minutes 4. COST: All costs are per routine. Solo = $40 Duet/Trio = $20 per dancer Small Group = $125 per group Large Group = $175 per group Line = $225 per group Extended Line = $275 per group Mega Line = $325 per group There will be no refunds for scratched entries.
5. AWARDS- Each participant will receive an award. Dances are given a score out of 100 from each judge. That score is averaged. Duet, Trio and Group dancers will receive placement ribbons and all participants will receive a participant ribbon. * Solos will receive a medal. Awards will be given in each grouping: solo, duet/trio, small group, large group, line, extended line and mega line. The highest score for newbie (non-experienced) solos will receive a plaque and scholarship to DSBN Dance Day. The highest score for experienced solos with receive a plaque and scholarship to DSBN Dance Day. The highest score of the competition for duets/trios will receive a plaque and scholarship to DSBN Dance Day. The highest score of the competition in (non-experienced) groups will receive the Niagara s Best Newbie Dance Crew Trophy, medals and $200 in entry fees for 2019. The highest score elementary group will receive the Niagara s Best Elementary Crew trophy, medals and $200 in entry fees for 2019. NEW FOR 2018! The average of a school's top three (3) scoring groups will determine the winner of Niagara s Best Dance Crew. To be eligible for this award, a school must have entered at least three groups. If a school has two experienced and one newbie, they can be eligible. This award will be given to the 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd placing schools. Entry fee scholarships will be awarded as follows: 1 st place - $250 2 nd place - $175 3 rd place - $100 Highest Scoring student choreography will receive a certificate. PLEASE NOTE: All plaques and trophies are annual. Please engrave your schools name and year and return it the following year. 6. MUSIC NO live music, can be live vocals All music must be on CD - single track, USB, ipod.or ipad No swearing, coarse or offensive language is permitted. Crews with unedited music.will be disqualified. 7. PROPS Props are allowed. However, no guns, swords or violent pros are allowed. No liquids or anything that may litter the stage is permitted.
