SAFETY PROCEDURES These notes includes boating, scuba diving and snorkeling activities. If you are using a boat you MUST have a marine radio and inform Marine Rescue of your plan. In absence of a boat you MUST contact your safety contact upon entering and exiting the water. The Research Team 1. Upon launching a boat check-in with Marine Rescue using the marine radio and provide the necessary details (boating only). Contact your Safety Contact to inform them of your safe launch and/or start time (Marine Rescue log-on procedures on pg.4 of Gemini Prestart and Launching Procedures). 2. If your time of completion has changed you MUST radio Marine Rescue and/or phone your Safety Contact to notify them of you new completion time. 3. Once you have exited the water log-out with Marine Rescue using the marine radio (for boating activities only). Also phone your Safety Contact and notify them of your safe exit. If you are not using a boat you do not need to call Marine Rescue, only your safety contact. If you fail to do so your Safety Contact will try to contact you first, thereafter any other mobile numbers they have of people in your team. If, after a recommended 30 minutes, your safety contact cannot contact you they must contact Emergency Services. DO NOT rely on your Safety Contact to chase you it is your responsibility. The Safety Contact 1. Ensure you are fully informed of the research team s intended location. Decide on an agreed time that must have lapsed before you alert emergency services (only if the recommended 30 minutes is not suitable for the level of risk associated with the trip). 2. Expect a phone call on or before the nominated time. 3. If you receive no call, try calling the Fieldwork Leader and/or other members of the research team. In the event of no emergency it is likely you will be able to contact them. 4. It is recommended Emergency Services are contacted after a max of 30 minutes of attempts (this may be less if the level of risk associated with the field trip is higher). 5. Inform the School of Biological Sciences in the event of an emergency. In the event that The Research Party does not follow these procedures correctly, emergency services will be deployed unnecessarily and there could be a considerable fee. OR c) Use Marine Radio (VHF 16 27Mg 88) to call for help. IF NONE OF THE ABOVE ARE AVAILABLE d) Activate the EPIRB Who you call depends on the situation. 3. Ensure the safety of yourself, the victim(s) and any bystanders. 4. Commence treatment of casualty if possible.
