For starters, league play ended the last week of August. Thank you to all the members who participated in our leagues this year. It was a great league season. Congratulations to Michele Austin and Virginia Giokas for winning the Women s League, Mike Fuss and Fred Geoffrion for winning the Men s Tuesday League, and Tom Mitchell and Ed Prystupa for winning the Men s Thursday League. The Mackintosh / Mattson Four-ball Tournament is an annual tradition on Labor Day weekend. This year we were blessed with great weather conditions, fantastic golf course conditions, and eight full flights of participants. Thank you to all the members and their guests who helped make this year s event successful. I would also like to thank our member volunteers who impressed our guests with their efforts; Michele Austin, Jan Freeman, Tom Guerra, Bill Hick, Bob Law, Bob Lucas, Jack Lyons, Tina Miller, Vaughn Rist, and Mike Stallings. The final Couples Nine & Dine event of the sea- HOUSE COMMITTEE Wow, that was fast. Seems like it was just yesterday we were playing in the delayed-delayed Opening Scramble. Now Four-Ball is in the rear view mirror. Speaking of the Four-Ball, at the risk of sounding redundant, KUDOS to Scully catering and their entire staff for making CCW s premier event worth every penny. The food alone was worth the price of admission with the highlight being the Saturday evening gala. Any member who sat this out without a good excuse missed one of the main reasons we belong to CCW. Special thanks to all the staff of CCW for always smiling and being available throughout the four days catering to all our needs. I just received my bar bill, Yikes, they did a good job! I hope everyone has noticed the new awning over the new scoreboard. A big CCW Thanks to Bob Lucas who generously kick-started the campaign with special recognition to the CCW House Committee for stepping up with donations and to Bob Marley for passing the hat during a Cote Cup rain delay. by Dean Helm son will take place on Friday, September 12 th with the annual Glow-ball Scramble. This is a great opportunity to bring some friends to the club and always a fun night playing golf in the dark. Enough about things ending, we still have three months of golf weather ahead of us. Thursday night Sweeps Golf will begin on Thursday, September 4 th and continue into the fall. This is open to men and women members looking to extend their week night golf. They will play 9 holes of golf and enjoy some drinks and food with friends in the dining room afterward. Daylight is coming a little later in the morning, and leaving us a little earlier in the evening lately. Beginning Monday, September 8 th, the first daily starting time will be 7:30 am. The golf shop and practice facilities will open no later than 15 minutes prior to the course opening. The golf shop will close at 6 pm. The bag room will also close at 6 pm or when the last cart is returned. by Chuck Camerlin Now that the days are shorter and it will be getting cooler, please don t forget to support your course. With the addition of the NFL network, Thursday night is Game Night at CCW. Grab some friends and neighbors (nonmembers always welcome) and catch some football and good times every Thursday night. Plenty of opportunity to stay connected even if your clubs have been put away. The Friday evening dinners and Sunday Breakfast will continue throughout the year. Don t forget, until the course closes, the dining room will stay open. Lunch is a great option during the week. There has been chatter about a winter pitch league, anyone wanting to step up and get this going, let me know. We can work with the restaurant and the club to put aside an evening for cards and camaraderie, another opportunity to bring some non-members in to experience why CCW is the place to belong. As always we welcome comments and suggestions. It s on The House!

Page 3 Golf Association of Wilbraham 2nd Annual Lobster Fest Join us Saturday, September 13, 2014 At the Country Club of Wilbraham 6:00pm cocktails followed by 7:30pm dinner $75/per person Lobster & Prime rib Congratulations to Bob Brown Who scored a Hole in One on Saturday, September 6, 2014 Hole #5, 142 yards with a pitching wedge Tickets may be purchased by mail at: The Golf Association of Wilbraham PO Box 61, Wilbraham, MA 01095 Or see Mary Scully at CCW dining room. Please make your checks payable to: The Golf Association of Wilbraham Proceeds from this dinner go towards scholarships & course improvements. HANDICAP COMMITTEE Here s a question that always comes up but no one is ever sure of the answer. If I m taking a drop do I get one club length or two? The general rule of thumb to go by is if it s a free drop you take one club length and if it s a penalty stroke than you get two club lengths. Another area that is brought up a lot is the pine grove on the 8 th hole. This year it has been played as no relief. But because of all the manmade debris you take a free drop to the nearest point of relief no closer to the hole. Quiz for September 1. A player was unable to find his ball because another player played it; even if his search lasted more than five minutes, he does not have a lost ball. True or False 2. If any point in dispute is not covered by the Rules, the decision must be made in accordance with equity. True or False 3. In stroke play on every putting green, a player marks the position of his ball, lifts the ball and places it nearer the hole than the spot from which it was lifted and plays the ball. What is the LADIES GOLF We would like to thank all the ladies who participated in Wednesday Night league and Match Play. Congratulations to the winners: The Fall Festival event will be held on Sunday, October 5 th. Please mark your calendars; we d love to see a great turnout for this event and remember this event includes limited and senior women members. It may seem like our season is winding down and it is..but it s by Bobbi Perry & Tina Miller not over yet. We still have plenty of great golf to play. CCW still has a couple events that need a strong showing from the ladies: Two Person Scramble, Saturday, Sept 27 Columbus Day Event, Sunday, Oct 12 Greens Keepers Revenge, Saturday, Oct 18 Enjoy your fall golf; it s a great time to play. by Ed Prystupa ruling? a. There is a one stroke penalty for each occasion of improper replacing. b. There is a two stroke penalty for each occasion of improper replacing. c. He should be disqualified. 4. In match play, if a player plays a ball dropped in a wrong place, the penalty is loss of hole. True or False 5. Which of the following actions is prohibited and results in the general penalty? a. Removing leaves from a spot through the green where a ball is to be placed. b. Breaking a tree branch while fairly taking a stance to play a ball under a tree. c. Removing sand from the putting green that is on the line of play before playing a ball that lies through the green. d. Page 4 SENIOR MEN S GOLF The Silver Knights have completed their 2014 Interclub schedule. Unfortunately, August was not kind. Our senior men suffered two losses during the month. Both were road losses. First, was a 6 ½ to 3 ½ defeat to the Amherst Legends. That course, with its lightning fast greens, has traditionally been a tough challenge for our guys. Two weeks later, the Knights travelled to Greenfield and again suffered defeat, 23 ½ to 12 ½. No excuses; we didn t play well. For the year, the Silver Knights won four, and lost four matches. While the Interclub matches may be over for the year, there are still some noteworthy events on the senior schedule. On September 24th, the club will hold its annual Rocking Chair tournament. This event is an 18 hole, net score competition, GOLF COMMITTEE There is a lot of golf left to the 2014 golf season. Fall is such a great time of the year to play. The leagues are done with just the playoffs left. There are also more tournaments to play, watch for the postings and email updates for dates and times: Nine & Dine Glow Ball Event Mixed Two Person Scramble Green s Keepers Revenge Turkey Shoot The annual Labor Day 4-ball was a great success. 64 teams were entered, the weather cooperated and the competition was tight. Look on Facebook to see pictures of all of the winners. by Bob Law played from the gold tees. The grand prize is a beautiful Boston rocking chair. All CCW male members, age 62 and over are eligible to enter. The sign-up sheet, with all pertinent details, is posted on the clubhouse bulletin board. A new event has been added to our schedule. On October 1 st, we will conduct a Member/Member/Member/ Guest Tournament. This is an opportunity to invite a golfing friend to come and play the CCW course. The fee will be $30 for 18 holes, including a light lunch following golf. Watch the bulletin board for further details. On October 8 th, the Silver Knights will invite the CCW staff to a round of golf and lunch. This is our way of thanking them for their efforts making Wilbraham such an enjoyable club. The fall season offers some of the best golfing weather of the year. We invite all retired men to come out and play. by Ed Prystupa Matt and his crew did a great job getting the course in tip top shape for the 4-ball. Thank you to the Scully s on a great weekend with the food including the Saturday night dinner. Thank you to Dean and his staff for the hard work done to make this an enjoyable event for all. And last but not the least is a big Thank You to all of the spotters and anyone else who may have helped out in some way. The cart paths were finished just in time for the 4-ball.
