The Panthers play the tournament s first game at 2 p.m. against defending-ovc champ Murray State, who comes in unbeaten at 4-0. The second game on Friday pits Morgan State (2-2) of the MEAC against Troy University (1-1) of the Sun Belt. The Saturday consolation game tips at 2 p.m., with the championship game following at 4 p.m. The Racers of Murray State come to Atlanta with a perfect 4-0 record, topped by wins over Memphis and Evansville. The Racers average 80 points a game and have made 36 three-point baskets in four games (average nine per game). Coach Rob Cross is 27-9 since taking over after 13 years as an assistant at Murray State. One Georgian is on their roster in senior Jasmyne Thornton from LaGrange. GSU and Murray State will meet for the first time in 23 years, before any of these current players were even born. Murray State has a 2-1 series lead, but every game went to the wire with Murray State s wins being 77-76 and 73-71, then Georgia State winning 85-84. Murray State was 23-9 last season, earning a WNIT bid, but bowing to Ole Miss. The year before was an NCAA bid ended by a loss to Duke. Location... Atlanta, Ga. Enrollment...30,000 Colors... In the season opening 77-52 win on the road at Kennesaw, it was 6-foot-2 Chan Harris that led the way with 22 points and 11 rebounds while senior veteran forward Danyiell McKeller, below, fired in 22 points as well to go with her seven rebounds. In the Sunday loss to No. 10 Florida State, McKeller s 21 points and Brittany Graham s 10 led the battle. Another asset for the Panthers is junior college All-America transfer wing Angelique Burtts. The 6-foot wing is shooting 63% on 10-of-16 to average 11.5 and lead the team with 10 assists. A vital cog for Georgia State is sophomore point guard Crystal Johnson. The Gainesville, Fla., native led the CAA in assists last year and ranked No. 20 in the nation with her 5.53 per game average. The All-CAA rookie had eight points, four assists and four steals in the opening win. Senior guard Brittany Graham notched her career 100th threepoint basket in the opener and added two on Sunday after leading the team with 40 last year in her first season at Georgia State. Senior 6-foot-2 forward Shay Rawls has been the Panthers Chairman of the Boards with her 557 career rebounds, including 248 off the offensive glass. Neither All-CAA rookie Jylisa Williams nor Traci Haltiwanger has played yet this season, so the team will gain more when they do return to the court. Georgia State begins its fifth season in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), a league that has placed three or more team in postseason tournaments for four straight years as well as multiple NCAA bids the past three years. The league has finished within 8-12 among the 32 Division I conferences the past four years. Two of the top three scorers in the NCAA last year return to the CAA and with three CAA players on the 50-person Naismith Watch List, a third consecutive WNBA first-round pick from the league is possible.

All tournament referees were assigned by the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Office. This is the first of two tournaments Georgia State will host as the 16th annual holiday tournament will take place Dec. 29-30. McKELLER S A FAST STARTER Danyiell McKeller has started off the year with back-to-back 20-point games vs. Florida State and Kennesaw. That is similiar to last year when she opened with 24 points and 11 rebounds in the opening win at Clemson and then had 19 points against Georgia Tech. She has averaged 21 points in those three recent ACC games. But, last year s season took a turn from the 9-4 start after she injured her knee and missed over a month. McKeller was averaging nearly 15 points a game last year in that fast start of her junior year. McKeller s next double-figure game will be the 40th of her career as she sits at 858 career points and 472 rebounds. She has that confidence back now that made her a 1,585-point scorer in North Carolina prep ball (Westover High in Fayetteville, N.C.) as she averaged 17.5 as a senior in high school. McKeller has topped the 20-point mark eight times in her career. She needs just six more steals to reach 100 in that career category. FOUR RECRUITS SIGNED IN FALL PERIOD Coach Lea Henry and staff got four recruits signed to National Letter of Intents during the fall signing period. Three come from junior college and one from high school. The early class includes JaQuavia Couch, 5-6 guard from Saginaw, Mich (Daytona State College); Leteicia Davenport, 6-0 forward from Gainesville, Ga. (North Hall High and Sante Fe CC); Briana Shepherd, 6-0 forward from Birmingham, Ala. (Erwin High); and Tracie Sneed, a 6-0 wing from Jacksonville, Fla. (Andrew Jackson High and Sante Fe CC). Couch is averaging 17.5 this season in JUCO and led her team in both assists and steals last year...davenport set the local North Hall High School record for most points (1,937) from her post position...shepherd is a top scorer in prep ball in Birmingham and is also a star volleyball player...sneed was first-team All-Conference as a JUCO freshman, now averaging 17.5 this season with a pair of 20-point games. The wing 6-0 guard made 33 treys last year as a freshman. The Panthers hope to add another couple recruits in the spring signing period and do have some verbal agreements. EARLY SEASON NOTEBOOK The Panthers are shooting 50% from the field for the season, knocking down 54 of their 108 shots. Five players are shooting 50% or better. The frustrating part would be that the Panthers are shooting just 56.3% from the free throw line. Georgia State s early season schedule has seen them be the only loss by Kennesaw State (2-1), while Florida State moved to 4-0 with the win over GSU. Now, 4-0 Murray State awaits. Georgia State s defense has kept opponents below their average. KSU is averaging 69 points in its two wins, but GSU held them to 52 points. FSU was averaging 83 points a game in its three wins before GSU held the Seminoles to 66 points...now, Murray State arrives with its scoring average of 80.8 points a contest. The Panthers finished No. 10 in the nation last year in steals (11.8 per game) and 12 against KSU and 9 against FSU this year. The defense has forced 45 turnovers (22.5 per game). And, that is without one of the team s leaders in steals, Jylisa Williams.

Two of the nation s top three scorers last year were in the CAA and both return for their senior seasons. In each of the past two WNBA drafts, the CAA has had a first-round pick. The 12-member CAA will play its conference championship this year on March 11-14 on the campus of James Madison University.

Georgia State Basketball Notes - Page 5 It Takes A THIEF HEAD COACH LEA HENRY Lea Henry enters her 16th season as the head coach of the Georgia State University women s basketball program and 20th year overall at the helm of an NCAA Division I team. Henry already holds the record for most career wins at State with 231 and has won 20 or more games in a season four times. She hs 289 career wins at her three schools. She has been a Conference Coach of the Year three times and has been named the Georgia Division I Coach of the Year three times by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Henry has led State to five conference regular season championships and three conference tournament championships. Her State teams have earned three NCAA bids and one WNIT bid. She is an inductee in the Class of 2006 Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and the Class of 2005 University of Tennessee Lady Vol Hall of Fame. The full-court challenging Panthers forced an average 22.7 turnovers per game, including 20 or more in a game 23 times. The top returning bandits from last year s team are the sophomore guards, Jylisa Williams with 71 steals and Crystal Johnson with 61 thefts. Williams tied the school record for a game with nine. Post player Chan Harris used her wide wing span to come away with 37 more steals in the full-court traps. The Panthers 354 steals last year were 17 shy of the 1980-81 team s alltime best of 371 steals in a season. SHARING The Ball Passing is another integral part of Coach Henry s plans as last year s team was No. 2 in the CAA in assists and No. 74 in the nation. State had 241 assists, an average of 14 per game. Pass first, dribble second, encourages getting the ball to the open teammate. They lead the CAA this year with 15.5 assists per game. Point guard Crystal Johnson led the CAA with 166 assists (5.53) and ranked No. 20 in the NCAA. Fellow All-CAA freshman guard Jylisa Wiliams made 61 assists to give the backcourt a combined 227 passes that led directly to the baskets. Baking The BIRTHDAY Cakes A trio of Panther basketball family celebrate their birthdays in November. Guard Traci Haltiwanger celebrates on Nov. 9, followed four days later by Brittany Graham on the 13th. Head Coach Lea Henry blew out her candles on Nov. 22. WHAT S NEXT? The Panthers travel to face Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., on Saturday, Dec. 5 in a 5 p.m. scheduled tip.
