Vocabulary Worksheet NAME Match the following terms for landforms and water bodies to the definitions given below. archipelago gulf peninsula bay harbor plain cape hill plateau channel island river delta isthmus river mouth fjord mountains sea ocean sound strait Write the vocabulary word that matches the definition. Draw an illustration. Word archipelago Illustration Definition A group of islands Examples: Indonesia Definition and Examples A large, level, or nearly level area of raised land Any small body of water set off from the main body of an ocean Area of land totally surrounded by water

Area of water lying within a curved coastline, usually larger than a bay and smaller than a sea Deep narrow inlet of the sea with high steep banks Highest elevation of land on the Earth s surface Large body of salt water but smaller than an ocean Large stream of water which drains an area of land Largest body of salt water on the Earth s surface Long, narrow body of water, larger than a strait, that connects two larger bodies of water

Narrow piece of land joining two larger bodies of land or joining a peninsula with a mainland Narrow piece of land projecting into the sea Narrow strip of water Nearly level land of considerable size Passageway of water that connects two large bodies of water Piece of land nearly surrounded by water but still attached to a mainland Point where are river ends its course

Sand or soil that is deposited at the mouth of a river, usually triangular shaped Sheltered body of water where ships anchor Small area of land that is higher than the land around it

Instruction Sheet Group A Identify the group member who will be doing the following: Teacher Records all information, is in charge of labels and supply bag, checks on builders work, teaches vocabulary terms and definitions to partner group. Builder Builder Both builders plan and create a sandbox landscape using the list of vocabulary words below. Builders can use the labels to temporarily identify their landforms and bodies of water. When they are finished creating the sandscape, they will remove all labels and give them to their group s teacher. Builders exchange places with the partner group builders. Builders will learn the partner group s vocabulary terms and label their partner group s landforms and water bodies. Builders clean up any spilled sand and smooth over their sand for the next class. Your vocabulary words (landforms and water bodies) are: cape river archipelago sound fjord plateau hill harbor island ocean
