South Tweed Ladies Bowling Club The South Tweed Ladies Bowling Club had an extremely busy year 2014. All Special Days for our members include Australia Day, Anzac Day, Easter, Daffodil & Pink Day in aid of cancer research, all of which special morning teas provided by Georg were afforded our members. The first Tournament of the year was the South of the Border Triples which has been an event for some thirty odd years. This was well attended and catered for. Our Past Presidents were also acknowledged together with our Patronesses Dot Larsen & Joan Leckie, the work in the past by the Past Presidents and the ongoing work by our Patronesses is greatly appreciated. The Black Douglas Ladies Singles for Masters, although being sponsored by South Tweed Sports, the Ladies Club has significant input into this great event. The 50th Anniversary Celebrations continued with a special day when the innovation of the golden bowl was to be bowled at each opening ceremony culminating with the special day where our Foundation Members and Life Members were honoured and acknowledged. Championships this year were well attended and under the guidance of the Games Director are now all complete. Sponsored day by Apia Insurance and Commonwealth Bank are the next events with Major/Minor Pairs and State of Origin being re-introduced also with the Christmas Break up and concert performed by our ladies is one of the highlights of the year being the best off Broadway production of the year. Twilight Singles are to be introduced in December and some of our committee have volunteered to run this event. Thanks must go to the Ladies Committee, Craft and Trading Table girls for their sterling work throughout the year helping to raise funds which are passed on to members via subsidising special morning teas and lunches on our special days. Many thanks must go to the Board, Management, Kitchen and Bar Staff, Markers, Scoreboard Attendants, Umpires, Coaches and Greenkeepers, all important cogs in the wheel. South Tweed Men s Bowling Club 2014 began with the 22nd running of the Tweed Valley Shield, which covers two divisions, encompassing Tugun, Coolangatta, Tweed Heads, Kingscliff, Pottsville and Sth Tweed Bowls Clubs. The six Clubs met together over 10 weeks, at each Club in turn, with 96 bowlers sharing fun and laughter, while participating in bowls of a high standard. This competition also resulted in the host Club for that day receiving almost $800 in green fees and healthy bar returns as well. Unfortunately, Sth Tweed ended in the middle of the pack in both divisions. Simultaneously, Premier League also commenced its season, competing at various Clubs on the Gold Coast and Sth Brisbane. Alas, results this year did not compare with the successes of 2013, although the First Division once again experienced the best results. The Pennant Season for 2014 also met with mixed success with the Ones and Sixes reaching the finals. Again, the Ones have done us proud by winning the District Flag. This weekend sees them competing at Tweed Heads BC for the honour of being crowned Qld State Champions for 2014. Fingers crossed for our men. The 2014 Club Championships did not attract as much support as we would have wished, with small entry numbers resulting in the cancellation of some of the events. Results were: Major Singles: D. McWhinney Major Pairs: D. McWhinney, K. Kerkow Major Triples: L. Ponting, B. Hoey, N. Smith Major Fours: Not held Minor Singles: D. Walker Minor Pairs: D. Laurie, J. Brown Minor Threes and Fours: Not held The Bowls Committee tried several innovations, such as increased prize money, free days and single entries to mix up the teams, to boost playing numbers, but with little success. With so many Bowls Clubs in close proximity, all offering a variety of events, bowlers are spoilt for choice and are able to pick and choose where they play. This slide in playing numbers is common to nearly all Clubs. However, your support for various feature days such as the Classic pairs and Presidents/Patrons Day has been very gratifying to the Committee. Thank you to all our solid core of players who front up week after week to support our days and who are prepared to put hands in pockets for our raffles and One Hundred Board. This year we have had several visits from travelling bowls clubs, such as Grafton and Tuncurry, and all have congratulated our Club for the welcome and hospitality that you, the bowlers, have extended to them. South Tweed Sports Premier League Sub Club Performance on the Greens Another good year for our Sub Club with Sharks Premier League finishing the season as minor premiers, but unfortunately were defeated in the major Semi-Final by eventual victors Helensvale. Our Premier A went a step further getting to the Grand Final only again to be defeated by the powerful Helensvale team. Our Premier Sevens unfortunately were unable to make the finals in any division, but at all times remained competitive and importantly the players thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Again in 2014 our club was able to secure the services of the great Steve Glasson. There is no doubt his inclusion into the team makes a significant difference to the clubs overall performance. Whilst the results in 2014 were not as good as our magnificent double premiership in 2013, importantly team morale and camaraderie remain fantastic. 2015 season There will be 12 Premier League teams in the next year s season Springwood has dropped out and two new teams, Bribie Island and Jindalee, come in. Again Steve Glasson is our import player. The competition starts on 3 rd January with the finals on the weekend of 21/22 March 2015 at the magnificent Pine Rivers bowls complex. South Tweed Sharks will field very strong teams that will be trying to equal the sensational results of 2013. PLQ continues to grow the Sevens completion with 85 teams participating during 2014. It is expected that around 140 teams will compete in 2015! The Sharks will compete in the Open Over 60 s and Division 3. The main final weekend will be at Bramble Bay Bowling Club on 28/29 March. A major raffle is run mid-year; the support of members/visitors is much appreciated. New members The Premier League Sub Club is a strong, happy and successful group. Our membership is around 90 and new members are always welcome. To play Premier League you need to be a current bowling member of South Tweed Sports and a member of the Sub Club (fee of $5 annually paid to the Treasurer). To qualify for the 2015 season you need to be paid up by the 3 rd December, 2014 and also financial at the start of January, 2015. South Tweed Sunday Trippers The South Tweed Trippers are Bowlers who enjoy their bowls on a Sunday every week of the year. They only play social, very social games it is definitely not for the serious competitor but you are quite welcome to come and play and try your hand with a few refreshments during and after the game. The Trippers have had a very successful year with (17) away games to various clubs around the district, Burleigh Heads, Robina, Pottsville, Musgrave Hill, Tugun, Condong, Burringbar, and the very popular place Nimbin for that relaxing day on the green. The George Thomas singles shield (in its 2 nd year) is played for in honour of our late member and will be played for in mid-december. We ve recently enjoyed a fantastic weekend in Grafton and also had a terrific social day with the Fishing Club and the Tweed District VRA Rescue Squad and together raised over $1,450 for this vital local emergency service. Memberships are a little down so we welcome any new bowler to come along and enjoy. We play in the mornings then after the game some drinks and raffles to finally sit down for lunch in which is very satisfying. At the end of the day it is a lot of fun, come and try and enjoy. South Tweed Indoor Bowls Indoor Carpet Bowls has been played at this club for approximately 40 years. During this time Indoor Carpet bowls has been enjoyed by many members. We presently play Sunday mornings 10am till 12.30pm. Please direct any inquiries to Club Reception and visitors are always welcome to visit and have a game with us. South Tweed Euchre/500 Club The Club has continued to build on our successes in membership growth from the previous year despite natural decline through aging members. The current membership of 45 is our best for many years. We enjoyed a Members lunch and Christmas get together; both outstanding successes. This year s champions were Euchre Jim Roberst 500 Elizabeth Hurst Congratulations to both, fine efforts against keen competition. A tournament held on behalf of CECA in February was a great success drawing over 100 competitors. Whilst our Club did not make the winner s list we competed well on the day. Our goals for 2015 are to continue the growth of members and new members are welcome to join us on a Monday for Euchre (7pm) and Wednesday afternoon for 500 (1.30pm). Sadly we lost our President Michael Monaghan this year in a tragic car accident and our thoughts are with his family.
TACT [Tweed Area Computer Club] Well, another year has passed and we are entering our 8th financial year. Where has that time gone? But there again, when you enjoy what you are doing, then time does seem to just fly! Even though the Computer Club s membership, mainly consists of seniors and or, retiree s it is a credit to all concerned that, Employment Agencies, Tweed Council and other Teaching Institutions, in the Tweed area, recommend people come to us to learn computer basics. A lot has happened in the last twelve months, in regards to the Computer Club and in the computer world, generally? On the PC front, there has been; Windows 8 & 8.1, Apple from Mountain Lion, to Mavericks and now OS X Yosemite. ipad tablets and iphones are now on ios8 while Android tablets have gone from; Ice Cream to Kit Kat operating systems. This may not seem much to the average person using a computer but to the team at TACT these are big changes and it means more leaning, more rewriting of notes, and that means, more time to put in. Membership is going from strength to strength, welcoming our 5,000th member in the seven years we have been operating, which is an outstanding achievement to all those that have been involved. In the 2013 2014 financial year, we had 320 brand new members join TACT, as we have 10 sign-in days a year, that is an average of 32 brand new members not only joining the Computer Club, but becoming members of the South Tweed Sports Club also, each and every signin day. Also during this same period, we had 200 members renew their membership, making a total of 520 carry over members of TACT for the 2013 2014 financial year. Computer room wise, we have installed nine new imac desktop computers to cater for the demand in Apple Mac classes, which are going very well. Last year the computer club run 690 classes, with an average of 12 students per class, which is a total of 8,280 students. If you relate that into lesson hours, that is near on 1100 hours and that does not include the hours of class prep, administration, committee, maintenance or our wonderful helpers time, as if we did, this figure would be triple or quadruple these hours. One of the things about the people that are TACT, is that they are always looking at change, they ask, What can we do better, What do we need to change to keep up with things and all our members, can have an input into this. We are dealing with Information Technology and it is always changing one way or another and that is the challenge for us as a group and it is one that for me personally, I look forward to. So all you other STS Members out there, be it, you need to learn about Computers, Tablets or Smart Phones, you have a Sub-club that can and are willing to help, no matter what age you are. To all the wonderful Tutors who give up their time so freely, a very big thank you and also to all those Helpers that come along to class and do the little things, like just guiding those around them and those that come alone every week and enjoy the company, thank you. Tweed Heads Amateur Fishing Club Situated next to The South Tweed Heads Sports Club. WOW, where did that year go?? The club welcomed many new members this year both experienced and those keen to learn a new sport and have some fun. The club provides a friendly open atmosphere welcoming new members male, female and families year round. Meetings are held on a fortnightly basis at the clubhouse on Thursday nights at 7pm NSW time. The members of the club partake in many fundraising and volunteer activities throughout the year: Selling raffle tickets weekly on Friday nights at the Sports club to all the patrons and provide a little entertainment and for those who dare to ask a tale or too about the one that got away. - Sausage sizzle on Saturday mornings at BCF, where we provide the infamous sausage sizzle, assisting in raising funds for our club. Many locals and visitors alike have stopped and bought a sausage and had a chat and shared some knowledge about the best place the fish are biting, what bait to use, compare the right tackle or rods to use it is being at BCF that we have seen some of our newest members come through. A fishing club wouldn't be right without a fishing competition, ours being held on a fortnightly basis with sign on at 2pm Saturday's and weigh in Sunday's at 9am. It is here that the friendly competitive nature comes out and we see members vying for the right to be the winner of the weekend with the biggest fish caught or the best catch in all categories men's, women's, veterans, juniors. 2014 seen Tweed Heads become the winning club of the Tweed Coast Fishing Competitions beating Pottsville, Murwillumbah and Kingscliff. Tweed also had 4 of its members take the division prizes for Ladies - Christine Prestia, Men - Ellis Hardy, Veterans - Peter Faux, Juniors - Kieren Clarke. Tweed Heads Amateur Fishing club again had members partake in various Queensland Fishing Titles throughout the year with some good results obtained, seeing 1 of our female members Brenda Shelley make the team to compete at The Australian Titles in 2015 for casting. Come meet us at our clubhouse on the weekends or call into BCF on a Saturday morning from 9am for a late breakfast and enjoy a good sausage sizzle. Fishing Rule Joke Fishing rule #1: The least experienced fisherperson always catches the biggest fish. Fishing rule #2: The worse your line is tangled, the better is the fishing around you. Fishing rule #3: Fishing will do a lot for a person but it won t make them truthful. Tweed Gold Coast Family History & Heritage Association The common interest in family history 17 years ago brought 17 people together to form the Twin Towns Family History Society. The group was based in the back kitchen of the Tweed Heads Civic Centre, using a cupboard to store their meagre stock of resources. After nearly 2 years & with 88 members the group moved into one of the back rooms of the Tweed Heads Library. By late 2006 this room was bulging at the seams with the now, Tweed Gold Coast Family History & Heritage Association, having grown to 175 members and a considerable resources collection. The group came to an arrangement with the South Tweed Sports Club board, at the end of March 2007, whereby we could use the area vacated by the bowls shop opposite the main doors to the greens. Mid May the group moved into the current room within STSC and the membership had grown to 190 many of whom were involved in moving the equipment and the hundreds of books and micro fiche that made up our resources. Membership remained steady from June 2007 till June 2011 at around 200. The same could not be said for the resources. At the time of the move the group had 2 computers and no subscriptions to online family history sites. Now 7½ years later we have 8 computers 7 of which are connected to the internet and subscriptions to 8 family history sites and pay-per-view setup with 2 other sites. All of these subscriptions are available to members at no charge, other than pay-per-view-sites. Also during this time we added a large number of micro film records covering birth, death & marriage records for NSW from 1788 to 1852 and Tasmania from 1800 to 1899 along with shipping records for NSW & QLD. The current microfilm library consists of about 200 films and several thousand micro fiche. In 2012 the group promoted an open week for Senior s Week in March which prompted membership to grow to over 250 by June. When repeated over the last two years membership has been maintained at over 250 at the end of June each year. Our location opposite the main doors to the greens has on occasions attracted inquiries from passers-by, who have either become members or availed themselves of casual usage of our facilities. Visitors are always welcome to use our resources for a fee of $8 per day. This gives them access to all our subscription sites such as Ancestry worldwide and Find My Past and our library of fiche and micro films. Should visitors subsequently chose to join our group, within a month of visiting, up to two visitors fees are credited against the membership fee..
Tennis Terranora This will be the last full year that Tennis Terranora is based at its current location in Bilambil Heights, part of the original land of the Terranora Lakes Country Club. After 26 years, our club will move to its new location, The Joan Nicoll Tennis Centre, in Henry Lawson Drive, Terranora. The new centre has been named in honour of our long-term member, life member and former coach. Joan achieved at a very high level in Australian tennis and is greatly respected by the Australian tennis fraternity. But it is for her commitment to our club and her outstanding service to our club juniors over many years, with quality coaching, mentoring and development, that we honour her. 2014 has revolved around continued fundraising by club members and grant applications by the committee, as well as the exciting first stages of construction of our new complex. We currently have the court bases, fencing and electricity for the first 5 courts and we will soon commence the court surfacing and clubhouse. A Federal Government grant of $250,000, from the Community Development Grants Program, was received with great excitement by club members and the local community, and this will fund the continuation of our project. A special mention must be made of a major sponsor, South Tweed Sports Club, for their ongoing support over many years, of our junior tennis programs. Successful junior programs create a successful club. Our new club coach, Tom Brownhill, previously a top Tweed junior player himself, has recently returned from a successful playing and coaching career in the US. Under his expert guidance, our club juniors are developing well. Our annual Club Championships are a highlight each year, with our members vying for the coveted champion titles. Played in September, our sponsors were AZTEC Restaurant, Coolangatta and Summergrove Estate, at Carool. We thank Mark Belcher and John and Donna Spedding for their support. Men s and ladies singles champions this year are Aaron Westerlund from Bilambil Heights and Sally Collis, from Carool. Trophies and prizes for all singles, doubles and mixed doubles events will be awarded at our annual Presentation night and Christmas party, to be held at South Tweed Sports Club in December. Our club welcomes new members, of any age and ability. Our club coach, Tom Brownhill, provides coaching for all ages and abilities. We offer Hotshots programs, squads, match-play practise, private coaching and Tweed District competition on Saturday morning or Friday night for the junior members and private coaching, social tennis and Tweed District competitions for our adult members. We have social tennis on a Monday night and Thursday morning, ladies competition on Tuesdays, Men s competition on Thursday nights and Mixed competition on Saturday afternoons. We have fun theme days, American tournaments and BBQs; something for everyone. Annual membership for adults is only $35 and for juniors, 18/under, $20. South Tweed Sports Table Tennis Club The club was formed in 2006 a result of Club Banora closing down their sub clubs. Gordon Rhodes was approached by Phil Black & Ben Bernotas asking if there was an opportunity for a table tennis club at South Tweed Sports. Subsequently due to the permission of the Management & Board the table tennis club was born. We started out with 16 players who transferred from Club Banora & have increased our membership to 66 members. We are always open to new members & encourage anyone with an interest in the sport to come & join the fun. Coaches are available to help you with your game even if you are just a beginner. We are a very social group that have fun as well as being competitive & all ages & standard of play are welcome. We are a competitive & social club that play here 4 times a week. Tuesday night we play competition pennant matches. Wednesday & Friday are social mornings. Sunday we play socially & have practice for the pennant players. Players range in age from the youngest at 19 to the most senior at 93 & 94 respectively. The0 club championships are held in March & play a fun day in July. We also play a state of origin match against Gold Coast Table Tennis club twice a year.(this year we won both matches convincingly) We hold our Xmas dinner & presentation here every year in December. The playing times are as follows: Wed & Fri morning 9.30am 12.00am Sunday night 5.30pm-- 8.00pm Competition Pennant Tuesday Night 5.30pm-- 9.30pm Come along & have some fun with fun people & get a little exercise at the same time Noelene Tauris President Good Sports Bridge Club We have been playing Monday nights commencing at 6.30 with all level of players involved in a friendly but competitive game. However a number of factors have seen our numbers decline and sadly we will be ending our Monday nights in December this year. Thank you so much to our players over the years and the Club for their support. We don t stop playing games because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing games. Keep your grey cells active and make new friends while increasing your skills. Photo Arts Club Tweed Eight years have passed since the inception of the Photo Arts Club, a sub club of the STSC. During this time many members have joined, many of whom remain with us today and have shared with generosity of spirit their photographic skills and knowledge in assisting participants to enjoy not only photography but the associated camaraderie. As of November 1st we have 77 active members ranging from beginners to the more advanced all with a common interest in photography. During 2014 after three years of enthusiastic dedication our President Allen Peate resigned. Members commended Allen for his time and effort in enabling the club to move onwards and upward to what we as members are appreciative of enjoying to this day. Barbara Dobinson Secretary and Committee Member Lionel Hood also resigned after a 3 year commitment, which was applauded. A new committee was formed in July 2014 with Peter Kulmer as President, Judith Bear Vice President, Pamela Costello Secretary, David Galloway Treasurer, and Committee Members Philip Michael, Tony Cadell and Bruce Gimber. Cheryl Gillman remained our Competition Secretary, diligently working behind the scenes every month. Due to family illness Peter Kulmer needed to resign as President and in August 2014 Judith Bear was nominated and elected to President, with Philip Michael as Vice President and Committee Member Ken Lankard. With three evening meet-ups at STSC plus at least one outing per month, members jointly enjoy learning skills and fun times associated with their passion, all of which have enhanced the quality of images being entered into competitions. Awards have been earned by highly praised members within our club, nationally and internationally. Sporting and social events at STSC were covered by our members who were appreciative of the experience and knowing their images would be shared with the competitors and function attendees. The Australian Photographic Society are holding their annual conference in the Tweed next year and we at PACT are proud to be Host for this event.
