Chery Fee As the end of the school year approaches, you wonder where the time has gone. It just so happens that I am approaching the halfway mark of my year as commodore of LCYC. It has been a great half year. So much has happened. Our last big project of last year has been finished this year. The third water well is complete and has been cleared for use by TCEQ. This project was managed by Ed Miller and Pete Macler. The two men have served a great service to the club. From planning, drilling, to getting the approval from TCEQ these two have kept up with all deadlines and kept the Board of Governors informed along every step of the way. Thank you Ed and Pete. We will have a new project starting soon. Keep reading your email blasts for more information. Joe O Brien and Susie Boedeker have volunteered with Anu Day and Margaret McGill to work in the kitchen to make sure there are drinks, snacks, and food for the keelboat and boardboat sailors when they get off the water. I know the sailors really appreciate all you do. This year s Commodore s Breakfast have not only been well attended but they have had excellent food. I know it may be quite a drive for some of you to come out for breakfast but I assure you it will be worth it if you drive out. Our youth sailing group has been attending regattas across the state since their season began. Sylvie Mathis and her volunteer coaches and teachers are expecting 10 sailors to be on the racing team. They are having sailing classes. They also have special classes for the Tye Preston Memorial Library and St. Mary s Hall. Great Job Sylvie, Chris, David, Harold, Rick and Aaron. Bill McVey and Lynn Simpson have been focusing on Adult Sailing. They provide classes, if you are interested please contact one of them. Bill also heads up one of our Adaptive Sailing program. It is a wonderful way to volunteer some time and say thank you. We honored three members for Lifetime Service Awards. Betty Kannawin, Steve Edland, and Barry Parkoff were presented their award at the Founder s Day celebration. Ray Leubner has set a goal for LCYC to reach. The Leukemia Cup is a way we work to provide monetary support for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. They have worked tirelessly over the past 18 months to get the optic cable in and working. We aren t quite lighting fast but almost. Dave Sanford along with Josef, Donny and Ray have done a great job of keeping the club grounds and docks in shape. The lake level changing due to all the rains has meant they are out working even when we are all at home dry and warm. They are keeping the marina investment safe but also your boat investment safe. Give them each a pat on the back when you see them. As summer vacation is just a few days away, remember to keep a few housekeeping things in mind. If you use it, clean it and put it back. If you are fishing on the docks make sure you clean up your mess. Please don t cut bait on other people s boats. Some of our boats are approaching the antique age and damage quite easily. If you see someone on the docks you don t recognize, introduce yourself. Plan an outing for your dock. One of the docks has done it and a great time was had by all. Women's Sailing Program Lynn Simpson It was off to a wet start for the women s Learn to Sail Class held on May 19 & 20. Weather conditions on day one, were not conducive for sailing. The class schedule was reshuffled and that gave us a day of classroom instruction and a day on the water. It all worked out, and immediately the students; Emily, Jerrie, Mary and Kerry learned that sailing requires you to be flexible! It was a full day of classroom instruction on day one, we covered: boat parts and their functions, parts of a sail, wind awareness, points of sail, tacking, jibing, rigging and derigging, and knots. The rain finally quit right after lunch, we took advantage of that and headed down to the docks for a dock side demo. With the demo complete, there was one more topic to cover, knots! Great job by all on the knot tying, everyone successfully demonstrated the cleat hitch, figure 8 and bowline. Time to call it a day, and ready ourselves for a full day of sailing! Day two, yeah the rain has moved on. Time for us to get some sailing in, and we did just that. A total of 5 ½ hours was spent on the water, lots of time to practice what was learned in the classroom the day before. What a fantastic day! The class wrapped up with big smiles from everyone, so much had been accomplished in just two days. Way to go women sailors! A big thank you goes out to Donna Rice for her time and talent helping out with the class. The next women s class is the Sunfish Class on June 3, 4 & 5. The class is full, with a wait list! Online registration will open on June 6, for the July 23 & 24, Women s Learn to Sail Class. There has been a lot interest in this event, sign up early to secure your spot! See you on the water! Branch MD LeukemiaCupRegatta July 2 & 3, 2016 With six weeks remaining (as of this writing) until the 2016 Leukemia Cup Regatta, LCYC has raised donations of over $12,000 for the South Central Texas Leukemia and Lymphoma Society! Over the last two years LCYC has raised $65,000 for LLS, and it looks like we re well on our way to reaching $36,000 this year, bringing our 3-year total to $100,000! The 13 fundraising teams listed on the LCYC LCR webpage are working very hard to make this happen. So if you would like to make a tax deductible donation, just choose your favorite team and a link will take you to their team webpage. Sponsors signed up include McCracken and Carroll Wealth Management (Platinum), Roeschmann Design (Gold), and three Bronze level sponsors: Brookshire Brothers, Glen Graham &Associates, and Pete Macler Associates. Our efforts at securing sponsors have raised $4,500 so far! Also, the Silent Auction is now up to 10 items and growing. If you have something you would like to donate, please call Pat Ketchum or me. Expectations are that we will have fleets in PHRF Spin, PHRF Non-Spin, Catalina 22, Portsmouth Dingy, J/22, Flying Scot, PHRF Trimaran, Portsmouth Catamaran and maybe even S9 Foiling Cats! Volunteers are needed to help Jake Mathis with Race Committee. Laurie Mc- Gill needs more help with staffing two shifts of 5 to help with dinner Saturday afternoon. Please remember to bring a side dish or dessert. These need to be a larger than normal given all the crew, sponsors, and guests that will be attending. First, a little housekeeping if you ve hosted an event using the kitchen, please put soiled linens in the bag hanging by the aprons. Unless, of course, you are willing to take them home and launder them yourself Be sure the club house is reasonably presentable when you leave, too we are so busy there may not be time for the housekeeper to clean before the next event. We especially want to thank Joe O Brien for responding pretty much whenever we ask for help, even at the last minute. He s been a real asset to the club for several years and we appreciate him very much. On April 23, the semi annual new member orientation was held, with refreshments served by Anu, Joe O Brien, and Karen Sigler. This event was followed by the Lifetime Service Awards and Founders Day celebration. Dinner was hosted by Paul and Gwen Cunningham, with assistance from Seth Cunningham, Glen and Elsa Graham, Mary Lindsey, Fred Day, Janet Lockhart, and several Sea Scouts. Margaret was soaking up her grandchildren in California, so she missed it, but all who attended reported an outstanding exprience. The Mother s Day Breakfast on May 8 was hosted by Fred Day, Joe O Brien, Terry Tomko, Bill Cook, and Glen Graham. These guys served a great meal, and even treated us to a barbershop type serenade. And they were all dressed in matching outfits. You really should have been there! Thanks to Anu, Ann Cook, Elsa Graham, Carolyn Harris and Karen Sigler, the tables were nicely decorated with hand made cards and bowls of pink wrist bands to raise awareness of breast cancer. Following club series racing on May 14, dinner was served by Joe and Lonna O Brien and Carolyn Harris. On the 15th, Susie Boedeker, Theresa Guenther, and Sue Radley made dinner. Thanks, y all! It s really nice to have a meal with fellow sailors and applaud the winners when the trophies are announced. LCYC/HCYC Collaborative Fleet Spring Series Report Randall Moore T The final regatta of the HCYC / LCYC Collaborative Spring Series, Jamaican Me Crazy long distance race, was held on Saturday, May 21st. Eleven boats participated. The fleets were Spinnaker, Non-spin large boat, Non-spin small boat, Cruiser, and Portsmouth. Conditions at the start were ideal; a light breeze, overcast skies, and just a wee bit of moisture in the air. All boats got a good start heading toward their first destination, WORD mark #1 at the dam. Given the rapid water rise, there was a question of, Are the buoys still visible? The chase boat helmed by Randle Moore and assisted by Stacy Moore zoomed out in front of the fleets to verify the rounding marks were visible and in place. Orange marks were in the chase boat ready for backup. All marks were in place as expected. By 2:00, a nice breeze of 8 mph had dropped to virtually nothing. For the next half hour, reports from the fleet reported slow drifting. By 2:30, PRO Randle was on phone and radio conversing with fleets about shortening courses and finishing in place. The long and the short of it is the Spinnaker fleet finished their long course to Cranes Mill with Gus Medellin on Canyon Wind finishing first followed by Chris and Debbie Fogle on Skeeter. In the non-spin large boat fleet shortened course, Charles Hankins on QT finished first and Mike Fennell on Family Time taking a DSQ due to technical difficulties. In the Non-spin small boat fleet Donna Rice finished first in place near her home port of LCYC, and Robert and Diane Wallis finished in place second and motored home to HCYC. In the Cruiser fleet, Pete Macler finished in place first and Bob Willis finished second. In the Portsmouth fleet, Arnie Wilenken finished in place in first, followed by David Oates in second. Final standings for the March, April, and May Collaborative Spring Series are Non-spin large boat Mike Fennell on Family Time finished in first with a score of 6, Non-spin small boat Robert and Diane Wallis finished first with a score of 9 points, Spinnaker Chris and Debbie Fogle finished first with a score of 11 points, and Portsmouth boat David Oates finished first with a score of 10 points. We are grateful the LCYC Board of Governors and the HCYC Executive Committee blessed the idea of joint races. Racing opportunities exist at all levels of competition on the lake, so there is no reason not to get your boat out and try it. Adaptive Sailing Events 2016 Bill McVey LCYC held its first of three Adaptive Sail Outings for 2016 on Saturday May 7th. Our guests came via Operation Comfort, a San Antonio group that provides activities for injured servicemen and their families. Guests for our 2d and 3d outings will come from a civilian-oriented group named Door-in-the-Wall TX providing opportunities for people of all ages with disabilities. Our schedule is for guests to arrive by 11 am, have an introduction to sailing, followed by a club-provided lunch at 11:30. We assign guests to boats at noon and go sailing until 2:45pm. We offer a maximum of 25 spaces, being limited by clubhouse size and by number of volunteers normally available...10 boats and skippers, 10 additional crew, and 3-5 helping with lunch prep. During the 10 years we have been providing this opportunity, our guests have always expressed their sincere thanks and gratitude to the club and our volunteers for giving them this unique opportunity. As of Wednesday prior to our outing, Operation Comfort had 25 on their list with a few on a waiting list...however, as unfortunately is not too unusual, but difficult to plan for...only 16 arrived on Saturday, which meant we couldn't use all of our volunteers. This is a bit frustrating; though we understand many of our guests have unexpected problems from day to day. The volunteers who can't be used are disappointed too, but fortunately also understand the realities. We all enjoyed a great hot dog lunch, with chips, cookies, and lemonade, prepared by Carolyn Harris, Joe and Lonna O'Brien, Ruth Madorski, and Millie McVey. Our sailing volunteers (not all were needed but had volunteered to sail) included Glen Graham, Brett Harris, Pete Macler, Lynn Simpson, Ed and Lancine Booth, Rick Mella, Bob Middleton, Bill Day, Chris and Debbie Fogle, Joe McDonough and daughter Clare, Fred Day, Steffen Heininger, Henry McGill, Margaret McGill, Chris and VanEtte Christian, Bob Wickman, Jean Junker, Jim Ritchie, Jan Lockhart, Jerry Anderson, and Bruce Dunn. We had a wonderful sail with a sunny sky, great wind of 12-15, gusting to 20+, and lots of big smiles! Spring Series Racing Rick Mella The final weekend of the 2016 Spring Series races started out in light air and ended with great racing each day. Saturday, May 14th, winds were calm where the Race Committee had trouble setting up a proper course. Three races were completed as bad weather threaten to abandon race 2 & 3, but the wind Gods kept the thunder storms to the West of Canyon Lake allowing sailors to complete nine (9) races for the Spring Series Sunday, May 15th, light air greeted four board boats for the first race with a windward/ finish race course. As the late comers hit the line for race number 2 and the winds increased allowing the RC Committee volunteers to set the racing marks for a Windward/Leeward course with a Windward finish, resulting in very close photo finishes as seen in the previous day. Highlighted in figure 2, Dave Sanford demonstrates the proper sailing position for crossing the finish line in race 3. With the first quarter of sailing completed and the Summer Series to begin next month, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to ALL the volunteers & sailors w/crew for their hard work in putting these events together. JUNIOR SAILING Sylvie Mathis Junior Sailing Program is in full swing. Summer 2016 is divided in three sections: Youth Sailing School, Summer Sailing School and Summer Sailing Session. Each section provides a safe educational environment and offer opportunities for youth members and non-members to learn skills, have sailing adventures and competency in sailing. /) Once more the Youth Sailing School, under the direction of Coach Chris Besch, is a success. Twenty six student-sailors are enrolled and they all shown up each day. As normal, we are having fun while learning the very basic of sailing with the help of Coach Duane, Coach Harold, Coach Sylvie; Storm Sailor Team, Brittany Upton, Colin, Donovan and Shaun Besch.
