As I mentioned at our Christmas Party, we are standing on e shoulders of all ose who came before us and e camaraderie we enjoy is a direct result of eir efforts. It's up to us to pay it forward. We continue to grow our family of dedicated riders by uniting for a single purpose, to ride and have fun! We are not a political, military or religious group, we're just a bunch of people who love to ride and have a passion for all ings Harley-Davidson. Wi a full slate of rides and activities planned for 2013, we've got someing exciting to offer everyone as we look at e road ahead. On a national level, H.O.G. chapters have been faced wi e problem of declining memberships. As we look ahead, we'll explore ways to continue building our enusiastic base and involving riders in our area who may not know what ey're missing. In recent years, we've worked hard to break down misperceptions about our chapter and we're seeing great results. Wi new faces at every meeting, we want to make sure we're doing everying we can to maintain eir interest and involvement. If we all work togeer, we will continue to make is happen. We will also continue to support our community rough activities such as e Salvation Army Fall Food Drive and e Annual Ride for Faer Fred. In a year filled wi anniversaries and celebrations, let's look at some opportunities for having fun: 5 Year Anniversary - On e weekend of July 25-27, 2013, e fif official Michigan State H.O.G. Rally is being held in Alpena. Make sure you've made your reservations because it promises to be more fun an ever. 10 Year Anniversary - "It's time to challenge e senses and e status quo," began Harley-Davidson's introductory press release for e V-Rod 10 years ago. st 20 Year Anniversary - We're entering our 21 year as e Norern Chapter and anoer fun Chapter Challenge is in st e works. It's also our 21 year sponsoring e Annual Ride for Faer Fred which promises to be bigger and better an ever. 30 Year Anniversary - 2013 marks irty years of e national Harley Owners Group organization and ere are a number of activities being planned to celebrate. 110 Year Anniversary - All of us have a unique opportunity to relive 110 years of e Harley-Davidson Motor Company in nd Milwaukee on August 30 rough September 2. Our directive is simple, to ride and have fun. As a firm believer in e K.I.S.S. Principle, my goal as director is to stick to e simplicity of at message roughout e course of is year and raise e bar on having fun! As always, we will continue to make safety our number one priority, but wi everying we do in 2013, let's make sure we have a good time doing it and make is our best year ever. Trent

Member Spotlight Mike Lince & Julie Kincannon Mike is currently an EMT, firefighter, inspector and investigator at Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department. He has 29 years experience in e Fire Department. Born in Midland, MI and has lived in norern MI for 32 years. Mike and Julie met when he came to inspect e heal department. Julie's friend Debi was always "looking" for single men for her. Debi started e process by contacting "Jack" who knew Mike and ey did all e emailing back and for. They finally connected, and were married in May 2009. Togeer ey have adult "kids", grandkids, and an extended family all over e U.S.A. Julie is now working at e State of Michigan, Department of Human Services. (started Oct 2012) after 23 yr 10 mons at e Grand Traverse County Heal Department. She was in e Air National Guard (in e mid-70s, right after e war) and has fond memories of her time serving but wishes she would have made it a career. Julie grew up in Royal-Oak, MI and moved to Traverse City in 1981. Mike was happy at Julie "liked" e idea of getting a motorcycle when ey met. Julie "never" ever had a desire to ride herself..but of course at all changed. She said it is because of e "oer" ladies riding in e group and e freedom to stop and go herself!! They bo love travel and would love to get on e road wi eir bikes and see e U.S.A. They have been members of e Norern Chapter HOG group going on 3 years. Starting is year, Mike is now e Assistant Director and Julie is e Merchadising Coordinator and part of e public relations group for e chapter. Page 3

Member Spotlight John & Kim Lefler John was in e Army from 66-68 Vietnam Combat Engineers. He is a member of e DAV and is in charge of e local van for rides to veteran appt. at Saginaw, Ann Arbor and Detroit VA. He is also member of VFW. John and Kim married 1983. Kim is a RN nurse since 1982 and Family Nurse Practitioner, FNP, since 2000, President of e local chapter of Michigan Council of Nurse Practitioners, since 2010. We became HOG members in 10/2002 after we had bought our first Ultra Classic off E-Bay. Kim had found it on E-Bay in Wisconsin, I had called and spoke wi e owner and told him I would get back to him. That evening e family was at Otter Creek wi e kids swimming in Lake Michigan we talked about it and Kim said yes. I had e guy on speed dial and told him it was sold. We really enjoy e friends and riding wi e group. In 2004, our son, Evan was turning 16 and he wanted to get his motorcycle endorsement. Kim said if he was she was and ey bo took e class and passed. She started wi a 1997 Sportster at June and by Sept. 2004 she was surprised wi a 2005 Softail Deluxe. We kept e Sportster and Evan was e proud rider, our daughter Jonna got her endorsement many years later and still hasn't ridden her own yet. John en went on to purchase a new 2004 White Ultra Classic and e next day we rode to Myrtle Beach for Bike Week. He rode to e dealer show, wi Eric Fischer in Denver at year and found out at HD had a Screamin Eagle Ultra Classic. He called Kim and was very excited, Kim asked "did you order one yet?" That's all it took John was en a proud owner of 3 Ultra Classics. The garage had 5 Harleys in it for awhile. The purple and white one was eventually sold on E-Bay also. John retired in Sept. 2006 e same year our daughter Jonna graduated from high school and went off to CMU. That fall he and Jim Dow road out to Denver and met up wi Eric & Reg Fischer and Jim Johnson. All of em en rode out to Las Vegas for Reg Fischer's Navy reunion to show e guys e bike his son made as a tribute to his faer. That is quite a story!!!!!!!!!!!!!! John has ridden many miles since retirement. Kim is a Nurse Practitioner wi e VA and ey rode eir bikes wi 2 co-workers to Aspen/Snow Mass Colorado for a week long class June 2008. We arrived on a Sunday and while sitting eating dinner we saw our bikes getting hit from e upper parking lot by a Jeep!! We were all week wiout our bikes. They were fixed and we rode em home. In 2009 Eric Fischer told Kim, guess what?, Harley just came out wi a Screamin Eagle Street Glide and I can get e color you want. That was great but I couldn't buy it because I didn't have a down payment. He en said we can sell your Deluxe, and I said OK. It sold in Aug. and I didn't get my new bike until Nov. and wouldn't you know we had an exceptional fall season and me wiout a bike. We have enjoyed riding to Rolling Thunder wi a group every year and in 2011 on e ride home all was well until riding M72 between Grayling and Kalkaska we hit a turkey. That bird totaled Johns 2006 Ultra and also did some damage to my street glide. John faired OK, fractured rib and road rash. That was May 2011 and John did not get anoer bike until Sept. 2012. Again, I was wiout a bike because John took over e street glide. When all was said and done he bought his current bike a 2011 Screamin Eagle Road Glide Ultra and I got to buy my Deluxe back. Kim is e proud owner of her "Madum" blue/white Deluxe and her "Kwiver" Spiced Rum Street Glide. Page 4

Stephen DeBusschere Head Road Captain Well it is at time of year again now at you ink ings will slow down and you can get on wi e rest of your year you find out at ere is is irresistible itch to ride! Well it is ere even if we don't ink about it. As your new Head Road Captain I want to welcome you to 2013 and hope you are as excited for e new riding season as I am. I have only heard second-hand some of e ings folks may have concerns wi but I would appreciate hearing from you directly to see if ere is anying we can do so you feel comfortable riding wi us and having fun. We will need more Road Captains for some of e issues to be addressed. We have several newer Road Captains, ank you, and are always on e lookout for more. Remembering we are all volunteers and many of us work we want to make sure we have people available to lead rides when ey are on e schedule. I would like to ask if you have enjoyed riding wi e group and if so I encourage you to become a member of e Road Captain Team. If you haven't heard it isn't at difficult but we do ask at you 1.) be a member in good standing and participate in rides, 2.) be willing to coach ose newer riders so ey feel comfortable, 3.) be willing to put togeer a route to share wi oers so at we all can have fun, and finally, at you attend e advanced rider's skills course. The last element is one at we put in place so at we can have riders at are confident in eir own skills on eir own Harley-Davidson. We will continue our New Group Riders Rides. This was met wi success when Eric Denoyer re-introduced em last season, so we will continue to offer ese rides. These rides are to build e confidence of e members new to group riding or new to riding. They will be a little slower and riders at are new to group riding are put in a position where experienced riders are around em when possible. This should allow e rider to focus on eir ride to build eir confidence. The experienced riders around em are to make sure ey get e room to be comfortable and feedback ey may desire to become more confident in group riding situations. These rides were scheduled once a mon on a Monday but I am exploring adding a weekend day once a mon for e new group riders at can't make it during e week. We will continue wi our typical Thursday Rides wi e first Thursday being a short ride to e Chapter meeting location of Peegeo's. We will have mystery rides and dinner rides and ese rides will typically be shorter rides more along e lines of 30-45 minutes followed by dinner or 60-90 minute rides for non-dinner events. The Sunday rides were introduced for ose at can't always make e weekday rides and for ose at desire longer rides. This is one area where we will need to increase our Road Captain roster. We have heard at e rides are a little long for some riders/passengers so I would like to explore having two rides on e weekend, a shorter one and a longer one so at we can all ride and have fun. As you can see we have several challenges ahead and I hope to figure out a way to address as many as possible. We are a family based group and we are here to RIDE and HAVE FUN! But first and foremost we encourage SAFE motorcycling. Steve Head Road Captain Page 8

Gregg Claxton Safety Director! TAKE CARE OF YOUR MOTORCYCLE THROUGH THE WINTER What do I need to do to make sure at my motorcycle will still be in a good condition next summer? Do I need to keep moving it? Do I need to do an oil change? Does it have have to be stored inside or is a simple motorcycle cover good enough? I don't want to pay for storage. Here is what I do before storing my bike for e winter: Before you put e bike away I would add some stabilizer to e tank and take it out for a short ride, pay special attention for anying at might be out of e ordinary. If ere is anying wor repairing or maintaining is is a great time to knock at out of e way so at in spring e bike will be ready to go as soon as e e weaer permits. Chances are wi most bike ese days everying will be okay, but your bike may be close to a service interval or someing and now is a great time to get at done. Change e oil and wash and wax e bike. Cleaning e bike will allow you to closely look over e bike and remedy anying odd at you see. I would en put e bike up on stands if you have em, if not just move e bike forward every so often if you ink of it. The only ing left to do en would be take e battery out and bring it inside (basement works) and hook it up to a battery tender. If you do not have a battery tender you can just hook it up to a trickle charger every mon and more times an not ey will be fine stored indoors. I would cover e bike up and store it in a garage but I would ink you would be just fine if it was properly covered and left outside provided you do not have to worry about eft in your area. A little preparation in e fall will help ensure a safe first ride in e Spring... See you en... Gregg Claxton Safety Officer Page 9

Inspirational Thoughts Editor s Note: If you have any comments, suggestions or ideas for e newsletter I would love to hear em!! Also I am always looking for pictures of Chapter members or events. Lorri Page 10
