THE PRESIDENT OF THE CSD AND THE MAYOR OF TARRAGONA SIGN THE AGREEMENT FOR THE TARRAGONA 2018 XVIII MEDITERRANEAN GAMES The funds will be used for operating costs and the construction of the 50 metre pool José Ramón Lete, president of the National Sports Council (CSD) and Josep Fèlix Ballesteros, mayor of Tarragona City Council and president of the Organizing Committee of the Mediterranean Games, signed an agreement at the CSD headquarters that regulates the collaboration between the two bodies and facilitates the payment of running expenses and necessary investments directly related to the Tarragona 2018 XVIII Mediterranean Games. José Ramón Lete explained that the signing of this document means a new impetus for guaranteeing the success of the Tarragona 2018 Mediterranean Games, to which the Government is firmly committed. In accordance with the provisions of the General State Budget for 2017, the agreement includes the subsidy granted by the CSD to Tarragona City Council to cover the operating costs of the event and, additionally, a grant to be used to finance the construction work of the Olympic swimming pool that will host the swimming and water polo competitions. In this respect, a subsidy of 3,750,000 has been committed from the CSD budget for 2017 to cover part of the operational costs of the 2018 Mediterranean Games; and there is also a subsidy of 3,000,000 established for fully financing the construction of the Olympic pool. On top of the 6,750,000 of CSD investment, there is also a contribution of 2,000,000 over two years provided by the National Gaming Commission through a sponsorship contract. Another amount for operating costs in the region of 3,750,000 will be provided for in the General State Budget, which brings the contribution of the Spanish Government (including the 2,500,000 already provided by the Central Government for sports infrastructures from sports betting tax revenue) to a total of 15,000,000. Meanwhile, the Mayor of Tarragona stated that these games represent a magnificent opportunity to promote harmony and peace in the Mediterranean, at which national Olympic committees from three different continents will be represented. Furthermore, the Government extended its declaration of the Mediterranean Games as an event of exceptional public interest until 2018, based on the potential arising from the association of sport with culture as a driving force for social development. This event will promote human values and mutual understanding between Mediterranean nations based on the core concept of culture and sport.
