Minutes Parks & Recreation Board Meeting Adel City Hall 6:30pm, Monday, August 7, 2017 1. Attendance and recognition of guests Members present: Heather Mager, Carter Nordman and David McAdon, Melissa Heikes, Marsha Fisher, and Justin Reed Staff present: Director of Parks and Recreation Nick Schenck Guests present: Caroline Warmuth and Natalie Lounsbury Aquatic Center Manager Caroline Warmuth and Head Lifeguard Natalie Lounsbury gave a final update on the happenings at the Aquatic Center. The Parent-Tot class was a success and was held July 31-August 4 th. Swim Lessons Session 3 finished on 8/3. There are a few more pool parties scheduled prior to the August 17 th closing date. 2. Approval of minutes Minutes approved for July 2017 Motion by McAdon; seconded by Fisher Ayes-6 3. Citizens to address the Board None 4. Director s Report -Recreation update A. Final Program Report Schenck and the board discussed the Final Program Report for Little Sluggers Session # 2. Enrollment numbers for Session 2 seem to be higher than the 2016 numbers. Session 1 continues to be more popular than Session 2. B. Adult Softball and Sand Volleyball wrap-up Schenck reported that both leagues are wrapping up for the year. The Adult Slow-pitch softball League ended the season on Thursday, July 27 th. The Coed Sand volleyball league will end with the league tournament on Tuesday, August 8 th. Both leagues featured 12 teams. C. Flag Football 2017 Registration is currently open through mid-august for this program. The program was new in 2015 and had 108 participants. Games will be played on Monday nights beginning September 11 th. Games are played on the outfields of the softball fields located in Kinnick-Feller Park, as well as the Football Field.

Page 2 8/8/17 Parks and Recreation -Parks Department Update A. Pool Season 2017 Schenck said the Adel Family Aquatic Center will be open daily through Thursday, August 17 th. The pool season has been very good this year due to hot temperatures this summer. Attendance is up 28.5% for a daily average of 474 patrons. The busiest day so far has been July 6 th with 926 patrons. Board Chair Nordman recommended that a texting service be looked at to allow notifications to be sent to patrons about closings, events, swim lessons, etc. B. Lion s Club Support Projects The Adel Lion s Club has agreed to donate some more money to continue the improvement of Adel Parks. Director Schenck has met with Lion s Club member Darrell Bauman and went over some areas of Evans Park that need some additional benches and trees. The Lion s Club has agreed to purchase 4 benches for the park. C. Bailey s Grove Park Update The playground was installed last week and currently Schenck is waiting for a few prices quotations to come in on perimeter sidewalks and a landscaping retaining wall. Once those Items are in, mulch can be brought in. D. July Crack Sealing SpecUSA sealed the cracks in the Evans Park and Kinnick-Feller Parks trails in late July. This Capital Improvement Project item was budgeted for in the 2017-2018 budget. There was an insurance claim where a young girl from Adel stuck her finger in a crack filled with the hot tar. Insurance is currently handling that. E. Kinnick-Feller Park Gazebo Painting Randy s All-Right Painting of Adel recently completed the painting of the gazebo in Kinnick-Feller Park. This Capital Improvement Project item was budgeted for in the 2017-2018 budget. The painting crew caulked all seams, pulled nails and power washed the structure before painting it. The campground has been open nearly 5 months. B. I will be bringing the final revenue numbers for the department for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. C. This is the final pool report for the 2017 swimming season including attendance numbers, revenue, expenses, etc. D. A general update on the progress of the Park s development.

If I have not received them, I ll bring the draft copy. Item B: Rec. League basketball registration is open; information has been sent to ADM Schools for their e-notification system, Facebook, and registration is now open on-line. Item C: Flag Football 2017 has kicked off with practices, and games are set to begin Monday, September 11 th.

2017 Island Park Camping Season Report through Labor Day Camping Revenue: camping fees 4/15/17-Labor Day $27,463.00 (+$1,142.00 from this time last year) 2011 was $16,162.00 through Labor Day 2012 was $15,343.00 through Labor Day 2013 was $17,348.00 through Labor Day 2014 was $20,780.00 through Labor Day 2015 was $23,628.00 through Labor Day 2016 was $26,321.00 through Labor Day Money is collected by Campground Host daily.

Adel Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball 1 st -6 th Grades We are offering basketball leagues for 1 st -6th grade boys and girls. The leagues emphasize skill development and fun. The programs will consist of up to 7 league games depending on grade level. Practices are held during the week at area gyms. Practices should begin around October 23 rd for the 3 rd -6 th girls and November 13 th for the 3 rd -6 th boys. The 1 st and 2 nd Grade League practices will begin in mid-december. 3 rd -6 th GRADE GIRL S REC. BASKETBALL LEAGUE Teams are formed by a draft process at the coach s meeting. Volunteer Coaches are needed: If interested e-mail Nick @ nschenck@adeliowa.org Dates: Saturdays - November 4, 11, 18, and December 2, 9, and 16. Timeframe: 8am-Noon (Saturday Mornings) 3/4 grade games played at Adel Elementary School; 5/6 grade games played at the Old Middle School. Cost: $60.00 per player (includes the cost of a team Dri-Fit shirt) Registration: NOW October 13 Register on-line by visiting www.activityreg.com Coach meeting: October 18 3 RD -6 TH GRADE BOY S REC. BASKETBALL LEAGUE Teams are formed by a draft process at the coach s meeting.
