In fact, lawns have a number of positive attributes besides appearance and the ability of kids to kick soccer balls around on them; they also release oxygen, sequester carbon dioxide, and have a cooling effect on the environment. The negative effects can be reduced by reducing input. The instructor will discuss grass species and variety selections as well as maintenance programs that require significantly less mowing, irrigation, fertilization, and pesticide use than traditional lawn care. Class meets Monday, 3/27 from 6:00 8:00 pm. Location: Medomak Valley High School. Fee: $19. In the KNOW In the DOUGH! with Debra L. Arter Who can resist the smell of fresh bread baking? In this one night class we will learn how to mix, knead, proof and shape basic yeast dough for loaves and rolls. Participants will learn how to create cloverleaf rolls, butter crescents, cinnamon swirls, tea rings and whole-wheat rolls as well as shape loaves of bread. Students will go home with a basket of yummy warm samples. All baking levels are welcome for this hands-on class. Bring an apron, rolling pin, cutting board and a plastic tub to fill and take home. An $8 materials fee paid to instructor will cover cost of ingredients to eat and take home and bake. Class meets Tuesday, 3/28 from 5:00 8:00 pm. Location: Nobleboro Central School, Nobleboro. Fee: $29. Backyard Chickens with Sarah Ruef-Lindquist Have you ever wanted to have chickens on your property? In many cities and towns homeowners have added small chicken flocks to their yards and gardens as part of the movement towards local food and sustainable living. Some towns even hold Coop Tours of the charming and unusual housing chicken owners have created. This class will teach you the basics of small-scale chicken ownership. Topics will cover local ordinances, buying and raising chicks, coop size and design, health and safety, food and water, flock behavior and equipment. Class meets Thursday, 3/30 from 6:00 8:00 pm. Location: Medomak Valley High School, Waldoboro. Fee: $19. Register by calling us at 832-5205 or online at our website at www.msad40.maineadulted.org
