WWW.SCRANTONCANOECLUB.COM MAY 2014 NEWSLETTER Scranton Canoe Club Commodore Corner A s we enter the second month of the 2014 season, the cold and wet weather continues. This has hindered some play on the golf course. Stage one of the golf course drainage project concluded on April 19, 2014. Greens 1, 6, 7, and 8 are completed and now open for regular play. Our golf course superintendent and I are very pleased with the contractor s crew and the outcome of their efforts. Pat informs me that the lines formed on these greens during the drainage installation will fade with time, and be much better to play than the old rocky greens. Remaining greens will be scheduled for upgrades next spring. Thanks to all the membership for your patience during this process. Please keep in mind some of the exciting events happening at the club during May. Entertainment events include the Kentucky Derby party on May 3 and the Annual Commodore Cup/New Member Dinner dance on May 17. All new members and their sponsors are encouraged to attend. These events are two signature club events, and a great time is to be had by all. May golf events include Spring Member/ Member-Member/Guest on May 4, Commodore Cup on May 17 and 18, and our annual Memorial Day tournament on May 26.May is just the beginning of a great 2014 season at the Scranton Canoe club!! Hope to see you soon on the course. **I would also like to congratulate Pat Healey on the birth of his daughter, Ella Elizabeth, on April 29, 2014** Sincerely, Jim Bonczek, 2014 Commodore Points of Interest... 2014 SCC Handbooks are now available at the Club House. Apologies for any and all misprints. The Irish Open Committee is organizing a planning session. Contact World Team Co-Captains Bruce Cizik and Tony Libassi for complete details. Improvements on Golf Course Continue W e think winter is finally over and great golf will soon be upon us all. We just finished the drainage project for holes #1,6,7 and 8. These were the poorest draining greens; the new drainage should give us more playable area of healthy grass. The next project will be to fix a few bunkers where the underlayment is coming up through the sand. Examples are on holes 3, 9 and elsewhere. We will then add more gravel power cart paths. Please use these paths as we finish each one. The yellow cart signs will direct you around wet areas to these paths. We will add laminated power cart driving rules in each cart to eliminate misunderstandings about where to drive. Our course is coming along great. All of us are responsible for keeping it at its best. Thanks, Steve Fox and Sean McDonough Golf Course Directors

Rules of Golf Explained - Order of Play Rule 10 - ORDER OF PLAY A simple rule, but too frequently misunderstood, particularly around the putting green. Here are the essentials: WHEN STARTING PLAY OF A HOLE IN MATCH PLAY the side that most recently won a hole has the honor on the tee. DURING PLAY OF A HOLE IN MATCH PLAY the side with the ball farthest from the hole plays first. Either ball may be played. WHEN STARTING PLAY OF A HOLE IN STROKE PLAY the competitor with the lowest score at a hole takes the honor at the next teeing ground. The competitor with the next lowest score plays second, and so on. In a handicap competition, order of play is determined by gross scores. DURING PLAY OF A HOLE IN STROKE PLAY the ball farthest from the hole is played first. PROVISIONAL BALLS are to be played after opponents or fellow competitors make their first stroke from the teeing ground. PENALTIES In match play, there is no penalty for playing out of turn. However, the opponent may immediately (before any other player has made a stroke) require the player to cancel the stroke and play a ball in correct order. In stroke play there is no penalty unless the Committee determines that the competitors agreed to play out of turn to give one of them an advantage. In that event, they are both disqualified. A familiar scenario involves a player whose ball lies off the green being invited to play on by an opponent who has already reached the green. This may result in the player playing out of turn, because the player who is off the green is not necessarily farthest from the hole. Under the Rules of Golf, if Dane has a 50-foot putt, he has the honor over Bryon, facing a bunker shot 10 yards from the hole. If Dane suggests to Bryon that he may play first, Bryon should say no thank you Dane. Leave your putt 29 feet short and then I will play. Playing before your opponent = bad strategy. 4
