Bruce Memorial Thornapple Tournament May 21 st The new, earlier date for this event proved to be a big success given the good weather and fishing. Close to 50 people attended including 38 anglers and MMA cleared over $1000 from the event. Eight muskie, the largest 47 1/2 inches (see below) and two northern pike were caught. Prize winners were: 1st place muskie : Ryan Adams, 2nd place: Trevor Williams, 3rd place: Steve Syrja; 1st place pike: Dan Fiske. All enjoyed the nice lunch afterwards which included pulled pork prepared and donated by Jordan and Josh Bailey. We thank them. The proceeds will be given to FOWL (friends of wolf lake) and we will be discussing with them how youth fishing at the hatchery events can best be served with the MMA money. It is planned to hold the event in May next year, and we hope to see even more participants then. Spring Egg Taking Report Roughly 368,000 eggs were collected on the Detroit River electrofishing over a ten day period this spring. All eggs will be hatched by the second week of June, and early success has resulted in more than 80% hatch rate. More to come as the fry progress as well as video from electrofishing, egg taking and the current movement study where sonic transmitters were implanted in the muskies. They have reserved a block of motel rooms for participant's use for certain events. Remaining tournament dates are Sat. July. 17, Aug. 13, and Sept/ 11.If interested contact Jeff Davis Tournament Director c:269-910-0840 Casting Deck Happy Summer to all! Where has the spring gone? It seems like it has gone by so quickly, and now the next thing on our minds is "I wonder if the water is too hot to fish now?" I'm sure most lakes will still be fine, although some have probably seen a spike in the surface temps. Just be careful when unhooking, and keep the fish's time out of the water to a minimum. Coming up in September, will be the annual Sportsmen for Youth event. MMA was a participant in this for the first time last year, and it was a great time. It is a 1 day event on Sept 10. This event is free for anyone to attend, and is a great way to get kids out of the house and enjoying the outdoors. There is so much to see and do, like shooting guns, catching fish in a trout pond, taking rides on ATV's, free food/drinks for kids. Last year, we had over 4,500 people (more than 1/2 of that was kids) come by the MMA booth. If you can, please let me know via email if you can help us out at this event. The children of today are the voices of our resources tomorrow! More info on this event can be found at: https://sportsmenforyouth.com/ Have a great summer! Jim tenhaaf, President, Michigan Muskie Alliance jimtenhaaf@gmail.com (616)813-2360 If you are interested in getting involved and would like to be an active part of MMA please contact Jim tenhaaf.

ATTENTION ANGLERS: NEW MUSKELLUNGE STUDY DNR Lake St. Clair Fisheries Research Station and Lake Erie Management Unit May 2016 Help needed for Muskellunge tagging study In order to understand the movements and behavior of Muskellunge and their associated fishery within the St. Clair-Detroit River System the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is launching a new study. The first step for this study begins this spring when a small number of Muskie (~20) will be tagged during the DNR s annual spring egg take in the Detroit River. Each fish will receive an internal acoustic tag which is automatically detected by listening stations deployed throughout the region. An ORANGE external FLOY tag will also be attached below the dorsal fin (see photos below). If you catch a tagged Muskie and plan to release it: please DO NOT remove the tag. Please record the tag number and contact Jan-Michael Hessenauer at (586) 465-4771 ext 35 or email: hessenauerj1@michigan.gov. If you harvest a tagged Muskie please remove the acoustic tag (approximate location shown below) and report the tag as per above. Reporting of tagged fish is greatly appreciated and will maximize the benefit of this study to the management of fisheries in the St. Clair-Detroit River System. Thank you! If you catch a tagged Muskie and plan to release it: -Please DO NOT remove the tag Please Record: -The tag number -Location of capture -Time of capture Call / Email: Jan-Michael Hessenauer Michigan DNR (586) 465-4771 ext 35 hessenauerj1@michigan.gov A close up of FLOY tag attached under the dorsal fin of tagged individuals A close up of FLOY tag attached below dorsal fin Approximate location of internal acoustic tag (insert) and external FLOY tag of tagged fish
