CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Phoenix Chapter - American Singles Golf Association August 2009 August 13 Meeting To Feature Free Golf Clinic From Acclaimed International Instructor By Jim Montague Chapter members attending our next monthly meeting on August 13 will be in for a real treat. One of the most respected golf instructors in the country will be giving us a free golf clinic! The clinic will be given on Thursday, August 13, between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., at McCormick Ranch Golf Course in Scottsdale. The group lesson will be offered by PGA Golf Professional Sue Shapcott. Sue will be discussing the causes of ball flight patterns, hooks, slices, pulls, pushes and shanks, etc. If anyone wants help or answers to specific questions, she will be available. Sue has impeccable credentials. She has won national golf championships in the following countries: England, Wales, Great Britain, Belgium and France. She came over to the United States in the 2000 to work with Hank Haney (Tiger Woods s teacher), and moved to Phoenix in 2008. She is now an instructor at McCormick Ranch. I learned about Sue from playing golf with one of her students, Kristi Shrank, who was a guest of the ASGA at the Coyote Lakes outing this spring. This was Kristi s initial round on a regulationsize golf course. Even though Kristi was a beginner, she hit a lot of great golf shots and took an aggressive swing at the ball using really sound fundamentals that you seldom see with new golfers. I told Kristi that I was impressed with how well she played (she had two pars for her first time) and was curious who taught her. She referred me to Sue, who I contacted. Subsequently, I have taken a couple of lessons from her myself. Incidentally, Sue can work with any level of golfer, from the beginner to the average player up to a touring pro. (One of her students is Liselotte Neumann, an LPGA touring pro who won the Women s U.S. Open in 1988.) The Phoenix ASGA Board of Directors thought that offering this clinic would be a nice change of pace from our regular monthly meetings, and would add a little extra value to your membership. If you have a desire to try to improve your game, attending this event will be worth the time and effort. Besides being a fun way to get a few tips to help lower your score, it s a good opportunity to learn more about what is going on with our club, and how your participation will bring more value to the other members. Moving on to another topic, elections for new officers will be coming up in the nottoo-distant future. If you have a desire to participate in this process, this meeting would be a great one to attend to learn about what positions are available, and where you may fit in the best. I want to take the time to thank all the members who have chosen to attend our monthly meetings and golf outings. Because of the economy, we all have to choose more wisely on how we spend our social dollars to get a great value. Your Board of Directors is working hard to accomplish that. Deadline Fast Approaching For Labor Day Outing in Prescott For those Phoenix ASGA members who would like to sign up for the outlaw event in Prescott during Labor Day weekend, you can still do so. But deadlines are approaching fast! People who want to stay overnight in Prescott and take advantage of the hotel package must sign up by Monday, August 10th. Footloose in the Hills By Sylvia Klemke After a relatively cool start to summer, the temperature reached 113 degrees for our event at Foothills Golf Club in south Phoenix. Fortunately, a gentle breeze helped cool participants, who finished the round in an almost record-setting 4 hours, 10 minutes. Most members took advantage of the facility s terrific special offer following the round: Your first draft beer the price of your score. So, whether you shot an 82 and paid 82, or you shot a 110 and paid $1.10, the first, refreshing beer was a great deal. Closest-to-the-pin prizes for the day went to Kathi Willis on the 119-yard Hole 16, and to Darrell Perry on the 135-yard Hole 4. With that kind of play, it s not surprising that their team Jim Montague, Debbie Flickinger, Kathy Willis and Darrell Perry finished in first place. Second place went to the team of Bill Gauthier, Mike Kelly, Sylvia Klemke and (blind draw) Dave Ritson. The Golf Committee thanks everyone who participated. Golfers Celebrate Fourth of July Weekend at Green Valley The annual Independence Day weekend outlaw event was held July 3, 4 and 5 in Green Valley, and drew a good crowd from both the Tucson and Phoenix chapters. The group had two dinners out at two great restaurants, and generally had a great time, according to Outlaw Chairman John Tuel. In addition, Randy White (Phoenix chapter) and Rick Riley (Tucson chapter) organized a terrific barbeque dinner on Saturday night. The weather was very nice for the whole weekend, and all the courses were in good shape. On Friday, July 3, the event was the Long Ranger. Rules and More Rules Q. Seems like poor Larry has had more than his share of penalty strokes. His playing partner was practicing chips while waiting on the tee box for the group in front to clear. With a sheepish grin on his face he said, I'm sure sorry partner, but that's going to cost you a stroke, no practicing during a round. What is the correct ruling? A. One stroke penalty, no practice during a round. B. Two stroke penalty. no practice during a round. C. No penalty. The chip counts as a drive. Hitting two D. No penalty. Chipping practice as described, is permitted. And the answer is... The answer is D, there is no penalty. Here is what you can and can not do when it comes to practice during a round. 1. You are never allowed to play practice strokes during a round. You can practice your swing, but not a stroke hitting a ball. (yes that means lay off those range balls you find on the fringes) 2. You may not practice bunker shots or shots from any other hazards. 3. You may not take a practice putt on the hole in play or a future hole. 4. You may practice chipping and putting on the tee box. You may practice chipping and even putting on the hole you just finished. 5. There is a caveat, practice putting and chipping are prohibited if they delay play and yes there is a penalty for delay of play. Refer to rule 7-2 Practice-during a round.

CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION AUGUST 2009 The national office of the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) has announced another great opportunity for singles to meet, greet, then battle it out on great golf courses. Venue: Myrtle Beach, USA. With somewhere between 80 and 100 golf courses in the area (depending on who you speak with), Myrtle Beach is simply the natural place to be when it comes to playing golf in the Fall. The weather is cool but not cold and the sandy soil is ideal for grass-growing conditions. All-in-all, mix the beautiful weather with the great golf and many friends from across the country, and you ve got the making for a great golf weekend. This year, the national office has signed an agreement with the Marriott Grande Dunes, located right on the beach in Myrtle Beach. It s a AAA Four-Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. We ve lined-up s o m e g r e a t courses nearby and have arranged for 10am shotgun starts each morning, so you ll have plenty of time to complete your round before the sun goes down. Date: November 12-15. Cost: Only $399 if you have a roommate, play two rounds of golf (including cart with GPS & range balls), enjoy six food functions, one of which is the Saturday night dinner... filet mignon and salmon and Friday night s themed Cheeseburgers in Paradise, where the best dressed parrothead will get $100. So to get all the details on this fun-filled event, visit the website at SinglesGolf.com/BattleAtTheBeach or complete the registration form enclosed with your monthly newsletter. If you d like to register over the phone, call us at 704-889-4600. Scotland a Definite Since we did our survey last month, we ve spent a lot of time researching the kinds of things that will make our visit to Scotland a memorable one. We were all a little surprised to see the players at the Open Championship wearing long sleeves. This wasn t a fashion statement. It can get a little bit nippy in Scotland, even in the Summer. So if you play Scotland you ve got to understand Scotland. Expect the unexpected and the trip will be even more enjoyable! Please stay-tuned. We don t want to announce anything until it s on paper. For updates, continue to visit the Scotland website, SinglesGolf.com/Scotland New Year s Location To Be Announced Later this month, we ll announce the location for our New Year s event. We will post 2-3 options on a website and will send out a national survey for your input. Chicago Celebrates Tenth Anniversary Congratulations to our fine folks up in ChicagoLand for celebrating their tenth year as a chapter of the American Singles Golf Association! The leadership has done a great job over the years keeping the troops happy and we thank them for that. New Chapters / West Coast + East Coast It s been a busy spring and summer with the implementation of a new start-up section on the website. Persons interested in setting-up new ASGA chapters can find the process simplified by going to SinglesGolf.com/start. We d like to thank Connie Vickroy who has started the Bay Area (San Francisco) Chapter of ASGA and Hallie Currigan, for starting the Savannah Chapter. If you have friends, colleagues, relatives, etc. in a distant city and think they d be an ideal candidate for getting a new ASGA chapter started, please have them contact us. - - Tom Alsop, President / Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
