Anchors Away ESCAPE S JOURNEY BACK HOME As some of you know, Captain Ron takes a new crew out ever week of Sea Scouts for several months down in the keys. He works at Sea Base in Lower Matecumbe in Islamorada, with the Boy Scouts of America. After teaching the boys between 14-18 to fish, sail and have a good time, he needed to get the boat home. So he sent out an email blast to all members in the Dunedin Boat Club. The crew was picked and we drove down to Islamorada in a rented van. Ron, Sherrie Kinkade, Sheryl Barnes, Dana Windhorst and myself. We were treated to Alabama Jack s for lunch. If you don t know about it, you will have trouble finding it, just ask Captain Ron. We toasted to our adventure. The 5 of us set sail on Monday morning. The Kinkade s boat Escape is the Yellow trimmed 42 Morgan.

Anchors Away ESCAPE S JOURNEY BACK HOME (Continued) As we were loading the boat, we noticed a friend drinking from the hose on the Captains dock. This sweet & gentile mammal had bad scaring on his back. Heading west to avoid the everglades, we motored the boat around the southern portion of Florida. Captain Ron decided to take turns at the helm on 2 hour watches and sail straight through the night. He gave us lessons on the electronic equipment. https://youtu.be/gpw0k3q0r2q I was amazed and a bit frightened on how electronics have changed sailing. Video, click 4 Storms were all around us, we were cruising at 5.6 knots under motor & head sail. We docked at Cabbage Key. If you haven t been there, this is a must do. You have to go there by boat or Ferrie. This place has lots of character, history and stories. The food was superb! Thank you Captain Ron. In the morning we set sail for Venice. Passing Boca Grand and it s marina that hosts the massive Tarpon fishing tournament every year. We had a pleasant sail. Captain Ron s mother called from Buffalo and we all said HI on Snap Chat. https://youtu.be/efdrk2j5rzy

Anchors Away ESCAPE S JOURNEY BACK HOME (Continued) Captain Ron timed the bridges and we were able to see several different varieties as we made our way up the intercoastal waterways. We saw the typical draw bridge, a double draw bridge and a swing bridge. We arrive in Venice. The rain did come, just before we docked at Crows Nest. Sheryl & I met Peppie the Parrot in the dock house. We all got ready for our dinner at the Crow s Nest. Very nice treat. Here you can get to by car. We ate in the bar downstairs and watched the US Open on TV. Oysters were on special. Yumm. In the morning we sailed with full sails in the Gulf of Mexico. Storms again were threatening our journey. I believe we were going 7+ knots under sail. When the storms were reaching us again, we ducked into the intercoastal and headed home. As we pulled into our dock, we were welcomed by familiar faces. Escape is home and getting ready for another season. Written by Jeanine Metts, crew member on this journey
