Cover Story An evening at Chesters A pleasant summer s evening of good company in an idyllic setting that would be very hard to surpass anywhere on this planet. The good company, members and friends of the MG Car club, enjoying an evening B. B. Q. in a garden setting comparable to an English genteel magazine after a fun day at Penguin motorkhana. The one endearing factor that put this in to the Australian back yard is, the girls at one end with the blokes well and truly at the opposite end of proceedings while things are getting underway, thankfully companionship was attained to consume the products of the B.B.Q? And now the good bit, the idyllic setting, a Mews or car enclosure that would put most collections and museums in an envious position, if not in quantity but the quality of the cars has to be seen to be believed, there is even an MG in company with some true traditional automotive hierarchy Printed by Impress Print, 10 Wenvoe St, Devonport, Tasmania, 03 6424 5900 Page 1

Rocker Cover Racing Competitors and Fans. Friday 30 th March at Noggin N Natter Evening Racing commencing at approx. 7.30 pm The Committee of the 2018 MG National Meeting encourages every attendee to bring their Rocker Cover Racer to run on what we believe to be fastest track ever. If you think you have the fastest, then now is the time to find out. The heat winners will be decided by an electronic system which will eliminate any dodgy judging. Racers will run the best of three heats with the winner moving on to the next heat. If you don t have a racer, then try to beg, borrow or steal one from a member who may not be coming. If that doesn t work, try building your own. Refer to the Rocker Cover Race Rules or get advice from someone who has built one before. Entry is free. Progressive results and video will be shown on a large screen. Racing can be viewed from grandstand seating alongside the track. Above all, we want this to be a lot of fun for all and barracking for your club will be encouraged. Peter Richards (Event Coordinator) Email: ar.doors@bigpond.com Theme Night Sunday 1 st April, 2018 Kimber House Garden Party We invite Members to be part of the garden party theme. The choices are endless, however YOU interpret a Kimber House Garden Party eg English Garden Party - 1930s 1990s Style English Garden Party 2000s 2017s Style Or perhaps be a garden identity - eg flower, tree, gnome or??. 2018 MG National Meeting March 30 th to April 3 rd, 2018 Cradle Coast, Tasmania Early Bird Registrations finished on February 1 and we have had a huge response for this year s National Meeting. So if you are thinking of registering, you had better do it soon as it is almost certain we will reach our maximum numbers. Of course even if you don t register, you can always come along and help with the events, we still need many helpers for the Concours and the Motorkhana, so please consider lending a hand. If you can assist at all over Easter, please contact me and I will provide your name to the particular event organiser. Any assistance is very much appreciated. If you wish to purchase any of the National Meeting regalia, there is an order form on our club website, www.mgtas.org.au pictures of all regalia can also be viewed on the website. The form has measuring charts for the different sizes, please ensure you use these, we have tested them and they are accurate. Do not assume that the garments sizes will be the same as you always wear, this may not be the case. So to avoid disappointment, please follow the guides to prevent arguments. All regalia is to be preordered, so please get your order in soon, so our suppliers can meet deadlines for the National Meeting. Following the National meeting there is Post Nat meet tour and many MG s will be, travelling our lovely state. If you see them, be sure to say hello. The countdown is on: just 49 days to go!! Rocking the Cradle in Tasmania, Easter 2018 The annual Devonport Car Show is on again, this year it is the Sunday the 25 th of March. Presidents Report Saturday, the Mustard Tart (TC MG), my favourite girl and a celebration with friends, then the drive home at dusk that only those of us with open top cars can appreciate, the smell of fresh cut hay, dew on gumtrees and the cackle of the exhaust, what more could you want! Sunday, the turn of the B, same favourite girl, wind in the hair, singing Radar Love, we crest the hill and there s a blue midget heading east towards us, with the drivers beard blowing around his ears and the passengers huge grin, we waved to each other as we passed by. Surely only this delightful English marquee could give these wonderful feelings as we exit 2017 and aim towards more of the same in 2018. Isn t it great to see all the events that our sub centres have planned for the next few months! Wow 388 registrations already for our Tasmanian National Meeting making us proud and relieved that the efforts of the organising committee are starting to bear fruit. Be reminded our committees are made up of volunteers who are working hard to represent the whole of Tasmania, so let us all get behind them and make it a year to remember. If you ve never attended a National Meeting before don t miss it! Nat Meets are usually great fun and entertaining both socially and competition wise. Holding it in our own state can save your thousands of dollars in travelling costs and unfortunately it may be out last. Nat Meet formats may have to change in the future as problems of finding venues for events and MG centres willing to run them are not forth coming. You ll never, never know...if you never, never go!!!!!!!!!! President Phil Editors Notes The Nat Meet is well represented in this month s edition, I m sure the Natmeet committee would welcome any members willing to give a hand at the venues mentioned. And many thanks to the magazine contributors The running of the Annual Tasmanian Concours is also being reviewed with a number of constructive ideas being put forward to date, members who may like to contribute with ideas are asked to do so through the state committee at this stage, then if a separate committee is put in place, members from the three sections can join a committee or put forward relevant ideas. Suggestions already put forward include, when the concours is run, in conjunction with other relevant events or not, time of year, classes, weighting of categories, etc. This may also be extended to all aspects of the club with members having an input through your state committee. Thank you to John Irving for his contributions to the magazine. Ed. Page 9

The intention was to travel to Cygnet and on to Margate, but considering the Festival was on that weekend and roads closed we decided on coffee at Woodbridge instead, travelling there via Fern Tree, Longley and Margate returning from there to Dru Point for the BBQ. After some confusion on the whereabouts of hut 4 we all eventually settled in for a pleasant afternoon amongst good company. 25 participants left the Civic Club at 10.00am MG Time where the first card was dealt, 2 nd card at Longley Hotel, 3 rd card at the Margate Heritage museum, 4 th card at the Woodbridge Hotel and the last one at our Page 11

destination, Dru Point, Margate. Here we were joined by latecomers - Lyn C and Peter Fitz at 1.15pm who came off the Ferry from Bruny once the cooking had been completed (but they did help with the cleanup). After the skullduggery (card swapping) was sorted out it was congratulations to Kevin and Irene McGuire who were pronounced the winners of the pot. Also those who had a birthday in January received a box of chocolates compliments of the Southern Sub- Centre, who also provided about $120.00 towards the cost of the meat. Shane Manley received 2 fines: one for travelling too close to the car in front and the other for cheating! Well done Shane. Thanks to chefs Robin Wilmot, Bob Leeson and Rod Harris for a great barbecue and to those who donated a gold coin towards the hire of the hut. Lyn Cengia Page 12

North West Position Member Partner Contact Details Coordinator northwest-coord@mgtas.org.au Club Meeting Details Second Thursday night of the Month: 6.00 pm for meal and social evening. BASS FLINDERS Motel, Ulverstone Penguin Motorkhana Firstly we would like to thank all those who responded to our call in last months magazine for officials and competitors for this trial event. On the day Bronwyn Zuber, John James and Craig Twinning handled all the registrations and results, Geoff Dodge was our scrutineer with Mike Wellman and Roger Richardson being assigned the job of time keepers with Margaret and John Hartley also travelling through to assist. Margaret Bannon, Susan Fraser and Sue Anne Midgley were on the food table. The three tests chosen by Robin worked very well and will remain for the National meeting. We had three female entries with all competing in MG s and fifteen other entries of which eleven were MG s and one junior, Cameron Howie in the trusty Toyota. At the end of the day it was Demon Midgley in the ZR Bubble car that had the best time followed by a veteran of motorsport in Peter Richards, competing in the Miedecke Special. Next is the real deal and if this trial and the support it received is any guide then all s going to go well. Over there? Or was up there? Page 21

The MG Car Club Canberra is once again staging MG TYme in October 2018. MG TYme is a celebration of the MG Y and MG T types, however any MG is welcomed and encouraged to attend and participate in the weekends festivities in the National Capital and surrounds. The event is planned to coincide with "Floriade" which is a magnificent floral event on the National Calendar, as well as other seasonal activities. The main display will again be held at one of Canberra's landmark venues which in itself presents unique opportunities. Mark Horsfield, Editor - Tappet Chatter, MG Car Club Canberra Page 23

Exhaust notes Thankfully the engine remained in place for the motorkhana, interesting to contemplate how the car balance was compensated for on removal of the ballast though? Exhaust Note You thought the lunar eclipse was a rare event, I believe there s a similar mooning looming! Enquiries to Tony Lansdell and Robin Wilmot for details!! (is Robin going to honour his bet?} For Sale The MG I would like to sell is a 1968 Mark2. It is in good condition and is mechanically sound. It has electric overdrive, SI rego. I am not sure of the asking price but I would think around $12,000 but I would accept advice on that or would be open to a reasonable offer. Regards. Peter Dart. 0400610752. Page 24

SQUARE RIGGERS All Pre War, T and Y Type MG s. Historic turn-ups always welcome to adorn this page, these belonging to the Saward brothers then of Wynyard. The TD owned by Winston Saward for a year or two late 50s, looks very well presented. The chrome bonnet strips, stone guards and other extras are very likely to ring bells? The new YT belonged to brother Bern and the TC Jim. More history of these also is anticipated!
