Page 3 JUNE 2018 PROJECT NEWS: County Fire Bans and Rocket Launches If you have any questions about the dog project please contact Melaney Dick at 620-728-9743 or melrussdick@gmail.com If you have any questions about shooting sports, please call Ray Bartholomew at (620) 663-3312 or Cindy Colle at (620) 664-3344 or email Cindy at collec83@gmail.com. Please contact Tammy Brown (620) 899-4792 for questions about the rabbit project. If you have any questions about photography, contact Karolyn Kellogg Howey at (620)663-5731 ext. 344. This is a reminder about Kansas 4-H rocketry rules as they relate to fire bans in Kansas. Much of Kansas is already in a drought situation. The 2018 Kansas State Fair rules state if a fire burn ban is in effect for any county in Kansas, exhibitors in any Kansas county are not required to launch their rocket(s). All requirements for the launching of rockets for the state fair and the documenting of the launching are suspended for the duration of the ban. We advise all counties to be cautious and use good judgment in planning and conducting county rocket launches, and consider cancelling them if dry conditions warrant. If you have comments or questions, please contact Deryl Waldren, dwaldren@ksu.edu, or 785-462-6281. ******************************************************* ***State Fair Labels for 4-H Food Preservation Exhibits Updated If you have any questions about the clothing project, contact Kathy Zongker at (620) 543-2767. The labels for food preservation exhibits have been updated. Here are the changes: Altitude where processed - Enter the altitude where the food was processed. In some cases, 4-H'ers do their canning project at another location, other than their own. For example, going to a relative s home on the other side of the state. So the label needs to reflect what the altitude is for where the jars of food were processed, whether in their own home, or somewhere else. Canning Method: Water Bath or Pressure - circle which method was used. If pressure canning, indicate on the next line which type of canner was used, Dial Gauge or Weighted Gauge, and write in the pounds of pressure used. They can be found at http://www.kansas4-h.org/eventsactivities/fairs/kansas-state-fair/index.html, 4-H Exhibit Area Downloads, foods preservation.

Dog members cannot just register for the KSF 4-H Dog Show without first qualifying every year. The disciplines are showmanship, obedience, agility and rally obedience. Most of these qualifier dog shows happen during county fairs or invitational dog shows during spring and summer. For the latest listing of dog shows open to 4-H members to qualify for the 2018 KSF 4-H Dog Show visit: http://www.kansas4- h.org/events-activities/conferences-events/dog/local-dog-shows.html. ******************************************************** 2018 Kansas 4-H State Wheat Expo in South Hutchinson The Kansas 4-H State Wheat Expo is a wheat fun day showcasing all things wheat. The program begins fall of 2018 and goes through September 2019. The enrollment form and program details are currently available. Visit: http://www.kansas4-h.org/eventsactivities/conferences-events/wheat/wheat-variety-plots/index.html. Members are asked to contact their local Extension Office by July 10 for information with enrollments due to the Northwest Area Extension Office by July 24, 2018. Cost for 2018-19 will be $35.00 to receive the five varieties of wheat. This fee contributes toward the cost of the wheat varieties. It is very important that we know the number of participants early, so we can have enough seed and metal signs available for Extension agents and leaders to pick up at the Kansas State Fair. New participants will receive a free large plot sign, and five free individual variety signs. These will be distributed on Friday, September 7th at the 2018 Kansas State Fair. Don t forget to pull your wheat samples for the Kansas State 4-H Wheat Show on Thursday, August 2nd in South Hutchinson, and also for wheat samples at your county fair, that may be eligible for the Kansas State Fair 4-H Crops Division. Resource information for the wheat variety project includes: (1) Wheat Variety Plot Brochure, 4-H 565 Revised 2010,) (2) Wheat Variety Plot--Youth Participant Handbook, 4-H 566, Revised 2010, and (3) 4-H Wheat Variety Plot Record, P1099, Revised 2010. To download these files, visit: http://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/conferencesevents/wheat/wheat-variety-plots/index.html. This year's participants who are getting ready to harvest their plots should be planning their county fair display for possible qualifying for the Kansas State Fair entry in the Showcase Building. For more information, contact Deryl Waldren at 785-462-6281 or e-mail dwaldren@ksu.edu.

State Livestock Nominations Due June 15 All state livestock nominations (non-market beef) must be postmarked by June 15th. This includes commercial heifers, market swine, commercial gilts, market lambs, commercial ewes, and ALL meat goats. There is not a separate division for registered breeding does at either state show, so ALL meat goats must be nominated in order to be eligible to show. The 2018 nomination information has been distributed to county offices and may be found on the Youth Livestock Program website (www.youthlivestock.ksu.edu). The current 2018 Declaration and Specie Nomination Forms MUST be used for nominations to be accepted. The correct forms have "February 2018" printed on the bottom of the form. Anyone who turns in an old form or incorrect form will have it returned and must follow the incomplete nomination protocol to re-submit them. The "Extra" Nomination Forms have also been reinstated for sheep and swine. Please keep in mind that these forms are ONLY to be used in addition to the regular specie nomination form for those who are nominating more animals than will fit on the regular form. If families only turn in the "Extra" form, their nominations will be returned, they will also be required to follow the incomplete nomination protocol, and they will be directed to their local extension office to rectify their nominations. All families are encouraged to use the specie checklist as a guide to ensure their nominations are complete upon original submission. This resource may be found on the Youth Livestock Program website, or through the local county office. Please double check that there are not any blank fields or questions on the Declaration and Nomination Forms before placing them in the mail. In addition to submitting complete or correct information, families must also pay a $20 fee if any component of their nomination is incomplete. First-time nominating families are also encouraged to use the Rookie Guide as a resource to guide them in completing their livestock nominations. Ear notches will continue to be required for swine nominations, as well as scrapie tag numbers being required for sheep and goats. Ear notches must be written AND drawn in the appropriate fields of the nomination form to be accepted. The full scrapie tag number is required, which includes the flock/premise ID and individual animal number (Ex. KSS0035 16151). Nominations received without this information will be considered incomplete and returned to the family for completion. Confirmation letters will be sent to families once their nominations have been processed, and reports will regularly be posted on the Youth Livestock Program website. Families are encouraged to use one of these options to verify their nominations. A complete nomination does NOT constitute show entry. The Kansas State Fair and KJLS release entry information through their respective websites. Both will be using online entry systems, similar to last year. The Kansas State Fair entry system is already available through the Grand Drive page. State Fair Grand Drive entries will be due July 15th, and KJLS entries will be due August 15th. Animals who are nominated, but do not follow the appropriate entry processes set forth by each show, will not be permitted to show. The nomination deadline of June 15, 2018 is a postmark deadline, so the visible postmark on the envelope must read June 15 or before. Otherwise, the nominations will not be accepted. This is a firm deadline. Families are highly encouraged to send their nominations via certified mail. Leaving an envelope in the general mail bin, or in a personal mailbox for carrier pickup is strongly discouraged.

The 2018 Reno Co Sirius 4H Dog Club Invitational Dog Show will be held Saturday, June 2nd at the Sunflower South Building on the Kansas State Fair Grounds. The Show starts at 8:00 am with showmanship and Rally Obedience. Obedience classes will follow the completion of showmanship at about 10 am and then the agility show will be held in the afternoon starting at about 2 pm. Please come out and enjoy a day of dog showing with us and see what our dogs and 4Her"s can do. **************************************** STATE FCS JUDGING CONTEST DEADLINE EXTENDED Entries for the 4-H FCS Judging Contest were due on May 15, 2018. Video entries will be reviewed, and qualifying entries will be invited to participate in the September 15 th contest at the Kansas State Fair. Team winners of the September 15 th contest are eligible to receive $250 towards the team s plan for their health project.
