The program will focus on the basic skills of the game in a non-competitive atmosphere. Volunteer Job: Volunteers will assist players in playing kickball. Volunteers will work as 1 on 1 buddies and are expected to be active. Requirements: Please wear athletic clothing and athletic shoes.

Location: McDowell Nature Center Dates/Hours: Saturday, October 17, 2015; day shift: 9am-1pm, mid-day shift: 1pm-5pm, event shift: 4pm-10pm Description: Celebration of all things night festival. Example camp fires, hiking, and hay rides. Qualifications: Must be over 16 years old. Volunteer Job: Volunteers will be at various stations assisting with face painting, crafts, food stations, set-up and tear down. Location: Marion Diehl Recreation Center Dates/Hours: Friday, October 16, 2015; 6pm-9pm Description: Therapeutic Recreation section will be hosting the Monster Mash Dance for person aged 13 and up with disabilities. There will be costume contests, dinner, and a haunted house. Volunteer Job: Volunteers are needed for the haunted house from 6pm-9pm. Volunteers working in the Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Division must be at least 18 years old and complete a background screening. Location: Naomi Drenan Recreation Center Dates/Hours: Sunday, October 11, 2015; 1:30pm-6:30pm Description: The objective is to encourage physically active and healthy lifestyles to families while promoting collaboration amongst community organizations and businesses in the surrounding neighborhoods through kickball, festival activities and health and wellness education. Volunteer Job: Volunteers will assist with setup and breakdown for vendors and food service as well as assist staff as needed. Location: Clanton Park/Arbor Glen Outreach Center Dates/Hours: Saturday, October 24, 2015; 9:30am-1:00pm Description: The Challenger Flag Football Jamboree is a partnership between Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation and the Carolina Panthers. Kids, teens, and young adults with disabilities will gather for a picnic, and then a flag football tournament. Volunteer Job: Volunteers will assist with picnic set-up and clean-up,including setting up tables, trash cans, passing out lunches, passing out t-shirts, mingling with players and families, breaking down tables, taking trash to dumpsters, and putting equipment back into van.

Location: Fisher Farm in Davidson, NC Dates/Hours: Friday October 23, 4pm-8pm;Saturday October 24, 8am-8pm; Sunday October 25, 8am-3pm Description: Wilderness Bunch is a 2 night tent camping trip; we will camp Friday night and Saturday night. This is in a very primitive location no running water. We will go hiking on Saturday and do other activities throughout the day, as well as on Sunday. We promote independence in the Wilderness Setting while also focusing on nature-based activities. Qualifications: Must be over 18 years old. Volunteer Job: Assisting staff in preparing meals for campers, interacting with participants, and assisting with craft or other activities. Volunteers do not have to spend the night, but are welcome to if they are up for the adventure. Camping equipment can also be provided if they decide to stay overnight. Dress in comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes and be prepared to be outside all day long. A good attitude and enthusiasm is a must! Location: Ray s Splash Planet Dates/Hours: October 30, 2015; 5:30pm-9:30pm Description: We will be having a family friendly Halloween carnival with games, activities, performances, and a special visit from Ray himself! We also have a haunted Tour in another area where older children and adults walk through our haunted pool to find ghosts, goblins, monsters and the dead! Qualifications: Must be over 18 years old. Volunteer Job: We need volunteers to help run and monitor games by helping kids and passing out prizes or candy. We also have a special need for people who can do face painting!! A third job would be in the haunted tour as guides or people to hide, scare and make noises throughout the tour! Location: Freedom Park Dates/Hours: October 17, 2015; 9am-12pm Description: Volunteers will help staff at Freedom Park with park beautification and maintenance projects Qualifications: Must be over 18 years old. Volunteer Job: Wooded areas in the park need invasive removal. Staff will identify invasive, instruct as to removal techniques and provide tools to do the job. Please dress in comfortable clothing with closed toe shoes and bring work gloves and a water bottle.

COACHING OPPORTUNTIES Youth Soccer Coaches September-November Location: Elon Recreation Center and Marion Diehl Recreation Center Hours: Must be available to meet once or twice a week for practice and on Saturdays for games. Description: Program introduces the fundamentals of soccer and provides youth with an opportunity for competition. Background screening required. Volunteer Job: Coach will provide leadership and guidance, physical training, and instruction in the fundamentals of soccer for team players. Youth Flag Football Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches September-November Location: Elon Recreation Center Hours: Practice 1 night a week for 1 hour; 1-hour games on Saturdays for 6-8 weeks. Description: Ages 4-6, 7-8 and 9-10. Background screening required. Volunteer Job: Teaching the skills of flag football; must have previous play or coaching experience. Youth Basketball Coaches September-March Location: Various Locations Hours: Must be available to meet once a week for practice and viewing training videos and on Saturdays for games. Description: Coaching for ages 5-6 & 7-8 and for ages 9-10 & 11-12. Background check is required. Volunteer Job: Coaching at practices and games.

COACHING OPPORTUNTIES Cross Country September-November Location: Sugar Creek Recreation Center Hours: Must be available to meet once or twice a week for practice and on Saturdays for meets. Description: Program introduces the fundamentals of cross country and provides youth with an opportunity for competition. Qualifications: 18 and over. Works great with kids, must have knowledge of the sport. Background check is required. Volunteer Job: Coaching at practices and meets. Cheerleading Fall Winter Location: Tom Sykes Recreation Center Hours: Must be available to meet once a week for practice and cheer on Saturdays during youth basketball games. Description: Ages 5-10. Program introduces the fundamentals of cheerleading. Background check is required. Volunteer Job: Coaching at practices and games.

Nature Centers Hours: Minimum 4-8 hours per month (depending on area) Administrative (minimum 6 hours per month) Clerical work, making copies, organizing supplies, etc. Docent (minimum 30 hours over a 6 month span) Leading public programs, animal handling, etc. Grounds/Maintenance (minimum 4 hours per month) Using non-power tools, inspecting playground, picking up litter, etc. Animal care (minimum 30 hours over a 6 month span) Ability to clean and/or feed animals Greenhouse Care (minimum 6 hours per month) Data entry, working with urban youth, etc. Visitor Services (minimum 4 hours per month) Answering phone, greeting visitors, etc. Nature Center Appearance (minimum 4 hours per month) Organizational skills. Reedy Creek Nature Preserve Volunteer Guidelines for Central Carolinas Master Naturalist Support Administrative (biological data entry, citizen science and field research project organization) Grounds/Maintenance (using non-power tools, filling bird feeders, picking up litter, collecting native seeds, invasive removal, tree plantings and removal) Office Appearance (recycling organization)

Opportunities for Groups Monthly Group Projects are available in Parks, on our Greenways and at our Nature Preserves. We always have a list of opportunities in our Parks! We can set you up with a Turn Key project in one of our parks all you need is ENERGY!!! Volunteers would be assisting with picking up litter, limbs and other debris; mulching, pruning and planting. We can even arrange for a shelter to be made available for a picnic lunch. Number of Volunteers: 15 and Up! Periodic Projects would be on a regular basis but not necessarily as often as once a month. Dates will be set in advance (for example: the second Friday of the month). The locations are set at least one month in advance. Special Events are great fun and are very popular amongst the corporate world. There are opportunities on weekends and during the work week. Special Events are a great way to bond and build teams! Volunteers working in the Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Division must be at least 18 years old.
