RHP Dylan Covey, who has not started a game since 8/18 vs. the Royals, will take the mound for the White Sox. The Sox went 3-7 on their last homestand, their second-to-last of the season they were swept by Angels over the weekend, lost two of three to Detroit and split a four-game series vs. Boston. Following this three-game series at the Royals and an off day Thursday, the Sox will continue the trip with three-games series at Baltimore (9/14-16) and Cleveland (9/18-20). The Sox went 5-2 on their last trip to Detroit (3-1) and New York-AL (2-1) from 8/23-29. TONIGHT'S STORYLINES The White Sox have lost six consecutive games, their longest losing streak since 7/4-10 (also six) the last time they lost seven or more in a row was from 6/14-22 (season-high eight). Chicago needs to win seven of its fi nal 18 games to avoid the fourth 100-loss season in franchise history (on pace to go 63-99). The White Sox are 5-7 over the last 12 games vs. Kansas City after winning the fi rst fi ve in the season series. The Sox have scored four runs or less in each of the last seven games (2.4 R/G), batting.208/.253/.319 with six homers they have been held to fi ve hits or less three times during that span. Sox pitchers have allowed fi ve runs (four earned) on 13 hits with 19 strikeouts in the last two games (18.0 IP) starters own a 2.08 ERA (3 ER/13.0 IP) and.174 average during that span. Matt Davidson needs one home run to set a new club record for homers vs. Kansas City in a single season. ROSTER MOVE Prior to tonight s game at Kansas City, Chicago returned RHP Nate Jones from his rehab assignment with Class A Winston-Salem and reinstated him from the 60-day disabled list. Jones, who was placed on the disabled list on 6/13 with a pronator muscle strain in his right arm, is 2-2 with a 2.55 ERA (7 ER/24.2 IP), four saves, six holds, 27 strikeouts and a.215 opponents average (20-93) in 27 relief appearances this season The Sox active roster increases to 32 and 40-man to 40. LAST NIGHT'S RECAP Brian Goodwin scored the game-ending run on Jeanmar Gomez's throwing error in the bottom of the 10th inning as Kansas City earned a 4-3 win over Chicago in the series opener. Goodwin opened the 10th with a double to right Alcides Escobar followed with a sacrifi ce bunt that Gomez fi elded and threw away to third base trying to throw out Goodwin, who scored. The White Sox scored all three of their runs in the third on Adam Engel's solo home run and Daniel Palka's two-run shot Ryan O'Hearn tied the game in the sixth with a solo homer. Lucas Giolito received a ND despite allowing three runs on six hits (two homers) with two walks and three strikeouts over 7.0 IP Gomez (one unearned run in 0.2 IP) suffered his second loss. Palka's homer was his 22nd of 2018, tied for the seventh-most by a Sox rookie in a season José Abreu went 3-4 in his return. REMEMBERING 9/11 MLB and all 30 Clubs will conduct 9/11 commemorations tonight as part of the league's ongoing effort to honor and remember those who were affected or lost on that tragic day. Pregame ceremonies will include a moment of silence and honoring fi rst responders and public service personnel. On-fi eld personnel will wear hats featuring the We Shall Not Forget batter ribbon all royalties from the cap sales will be donated to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, the Pentagon Memorial Fund and the Flight 93 National Memorial. The Sox were scheduled to play at the Yankees on 9/11/01. ON-BASE MACHINE Yolmer Sánchez has reached base safely in 26 of his last 27 games (hit safely in 23), hitting.303 (30-99) with seven doubles, one HR, five RBI, 14 walks, three HBP and seven multihit efforts. Sánchez reached base safely in a career-high 22 consecutive games from 8/11-9/3, the longest streak by a White Sox since 1B José Abreu (29 games) from 8/2-9/2/16. POSTSEASON VOYAGE Advanced Rookie Great Falls will face Grand Junction in the best-of-three Pioneer League championship series. Game 1 is set for tonight (7:40 p.m. CT) at Grand Junction Great Falls will host Game 2 on Thursday (8:00 p.m. CT), and a winner-take-all Game 3 on Saturday (8:00 p.m. CT). The Voyagers lost to Ogden in the 2017 championship series. WHITE SOX VS. KANSAS CITY The White Sox lead the season series, 10-7, going 5-4 at Guaranteed Rate Field and 5-3 at Kauffman Stadium. Chicago is 5-7 over the last 12 games after winning the fi rst fi ve of the season series in April. The Sox are hitting.286/.350/.518 with 33 home runs, own a 3.59 ERA (61 ER/153.0 IP) and have made eight quality starts they have outscored the Royals, 97-73. The White Sox are 20-16 vs. Kansas City since 2017 after going 40-72 from 2011-16 they are averaging 5.7 runs per game (204 runs) with 49 homers during the 36-game stretch. The Sox lead the all-time series, 395-379 they are 219-174 at home (127-104 at Guaranteed Rate Field) and 176-205 on the road (165-183 at Kauffman Stadium). RAISED VS. THE ROYALS Matt Davidson is 17-45 (.378) with eight home runs and 14 RBI in 12 games vs. Kansas City this season. He is tied with Albert Belle (1998) and José Valentín (2003) for the most homers by a Sox vs. the Royals in a single season. The last player to hit eight homers vs. a team was Adam Dunn (2013 vs. Minnesota), and the last to hit nine was Roy Sievers (1960 vs. Washington) Gus Zernial, who hit 11 vs. the St. Louis Browns in 1950, owns the club record (STATS LLC). LOOKING FOR CENTRAL COMMAND Chicago is 27-37 against the American League Central in 2018, going 13-21 at Guaranteed Rate Field and 14-16 on the road. The Sox need to win 11 of their fi nal 12 games vs. the division to record a.500 mark, and 12 to fi nish above.500. The White Sox have won four of the last seven games, and 10 of the last 16 by a 79-70 margin they have won three of the last four games and six of the last eight on the road. The White Sox are 318-414 vs. the AL Central since 2009, posting a losing record every season except 2012 (37-36). PALKA POWER Daniel Palka, who was claimed off waivers from Minnesota on 11/4/17, ranks among the American League rookie leaders in home runs (3rd, 22), RBI (3rd, 57), extra-base hits (T3rd, 39), total bases (5th, 172) and runs scored (5th, 48). Palka's 22 homers are tied with Pete Ward (1963) for the most by a left-handed hitting rookie in White Sox history. His three pinch-hit homers this season are tied with Oscar Gamble (1977), John Romano (1959) and Ron Northey (1956) for the White Sox franchise record, and his nine RBI are the most by a Sox pinch-hitter since Jerry Hairston in 1987 (10). POWER AND SPEED Tim Anderson (18 HR/26 SB) is one of four players in the major leagues with at least 18 home runs and 26 stolen bases this season, joining Boston's Mookie Betts, Pittsburgh's Starling Marte and Cleveland's José Ramírez. Anderson is attempting to become the first White Sox shortstop to record a 20-HR/20-SB season, and could join Alex Ríos (2010) and Tommie Agee (1966) as the only players in franchise history to post 20 homers and 30 steals in one season. GRAB SOME BENCH Chicago has struck out 1,392 times in 2018, the most in MLB it is fi ve shy of tying the club record of 1,397 set last season. Yoán Moncada leads MLB with 195 strikeouts in 2018 he is 27 shy of tying Adam Dunn (222 in 2012) for the club record. ABREU'S HISTORIC RUN José Abreu needs three homers to become the ninth player in MLB history with 25-plus homers in his fi rst fi ve-plus seasons. He is on-pace for 25 HR/88 RBI in 2018, and was on-pace for 29 HR/102 RBI before missing 18 games while on the DL. Abreu (2014-17), Hall-of-Famer Joe DiMaggio (1936-41) and Albert Pujols (2001-10) are the only players in major-league history to begin their careers with at least four consecutive seasons of 25-plus home runs and 100-plus RBI. He already has joined Al Simmons (11, 1924-34), Pujols (10, 2001-10), Ted Williams (1939-42, '46-49) and DiMaggio (1936-42) as the only players in history to record 100 or more RBI in each of his first four seasons. QUALITY AND QUANTITY The White Sox have made 1,381 quality starts since the start of the 2003 season, one more than the New York Mets (1,380) for the highest total in the major leagues, and 53 more than Oakland (1,328), the next-closest American League team.
