The Pacific Northwest Historics features many of the world s rarest and most beautiful pre-1970 race cars. This year, more than 250 vintage race cars are expected to enter. Favorites include Ferraris, Lotuses, Cobras, Corvettes, Porsches, Austin Healeys and some less recognizable names like Elva, Ginetta, and McLaren. Most are in mint condition through extensive restoration and many attain speeds in excess of 150 miles per hour. The paddock area and in-field are open to all spectators. FEATURED DISPLAY: The year 2011 brings about a monumental occasion in automotive history, the 50 th anniversary of the Jaguar E-type ( XKE). The E-type known in the US as the XKE was introduced to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961. As the successor to the highly successful XK120, 140 and 150 series, the E-types stayed in production until 1973. The Series 1 were manufactured from 1961 to 1968, Series 2 from 1968 to 1970, and Series 3 from 1971 to 1973. Designed by Martin Sayer at the request of Sir William Lyons, president and founder of Jaguar, based on the highly successful D-type it incorporated the latest automotive technology; semi-monocoque body construction, torsion bar front suspension, four wheel disk brakes, and fully independent rear suspension with inboard mounted brakes. A double overhead cam straight six engine fed by three 2 inch throat SUs powered the Series 1 and 2 while a single overhead cam V12 powered the Series 3. Two body styles were available, the two-seater roadster and the coupe. Twelve Lightweight all alloy racing versions of the E-type roadster were built in the early 60 s competing credibly in such races as Le Mans, Sebring, Silverstone, Goodwood and Nurburgring. Eleven survive today one being destroyed at Le Mans in 1963 while being driven by Roy Salvadori. CAR CORRAL: PRESENTERS: CONFIRMED SPONSORS: BENEFICIARY: MORE INFORMATION: An additional 250 vintage and collector cars from local car clubs will be on display in the car corral. IROE Media Advisory TEN LOCAL EXECUTIVES "RACE FOR CHILDREN'S" IN THE 2011 INTERNATIONAL RACE OF EXECUTIVES AT PACIFIC RACEWAYS DATE: Thursday, June 30, 2011 LOCATION: SCHEDULE: CELEBRITY INSTRUCTORS: EVENT DESCRIPTION: HISTORY OF IROE: Pacific Raceways, Highway 18, Kent, Wash. **Media interviews will be granted. Closed to the public. 8:30 a.m.: Classroom instruction 9 a.m.: On track instruction 12:30 p.m.: Lunch 1:30 p.m.: On track competition 3 p.m.: Awards ceremony Professional Drivers Dominic Dobson, Parker Johnstone, Don Kitch, Jr. The International Race of Executives (IROE) is a truly unique racing experience for business leaders. For a $10,000 tax deductible donation to Seattle Children s Hospital, ten participants enjoy a very special day at Pacific Raceways complete with the opportunity to train with world class drivers and compete for best lap times and driving style in new Mercedes- Benz high performance sedans. The IROE was the vision of Phil Smart, Jr. of Seattle s Phil Smart Mercedes- Benz, the title sponsor of the Pacific Northwest Historics Vintage Auto Races. Auto racing enthusiasts are familiar with the IROC or the International Race of Champions, where drivers from different venues race against one another in identically prepared cars. Smart converted this to his arena and suggested the International Race of Executives. From this idea the current IROE format has evolved. Celebrity instructors including Vic Edelbrock Jr., Bobby Rahal, Mauricio Gugelmin, Danny Sullivan, David Donohue, Chip Hanauer, Jim Hall, Bob Bondurant, Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, Brian Redman, Al Unser and Parnelli Jones have all taken part in past IROE events to demonstrate the level of car control and speed that can be obtained by a professional. International Race of Executives A Winning Day for Local Executives Ten local executives, or their representatives, will learn to drive race cars during the International Race of Executives (IROE) on Thursday, June 30 at Pacific Raceways as part of the Pacific Northwest Historics race weekend. In exchange for a gift of $10,000 to Seattle Children s Hospital, each driver will receive professional driving instruction from ProFormance Racing School, followed by races against the clock. The winners are determined not only by lap times, but also by style points awarded for the finer points of car control, such as steering input and braking modulation. The IROE was the vision of Phil Smart, Jr. of Seattle s Phil Smart Mercedes-Benz, the title sponsor of the Pacific Northwest Historics Vintage Car Race. Auto racing enthusiasts are already familiar with the IROC, or the International Race of Champions, where drivers from different venues race against one another in identically prepared cars. Smart converted this to his arena and suggested the International Race of Executives. From this idea the current IROE format has evolved. This year s guest celebrity driver is Parker Johnstone. A 6-time national champion who has competed and won at the highest levels of international motor racing. As the winningest driver in sports car racing history (including two 24-Hour of Dayton victories) and one-time holder of the closed course world speed record (in excess of 238mph), he was retained by ABC and ESPN to provide commentary for their motorsports coverage after retiring from driving full time. Celebrity instructors including Vic Edelbrock Jr., Bobby Rahal, Mauricio Gugelmin, Danny Sullivan, David Donohue, Bob Bondurant, Dan Gurney, Brian Redmond, Parnelli Jones and Al Unser have all taken part in past IROE events. This year, Dominic Dobson, will be our celebrity instructor along with Don Kitch, Jr. Dobson has competed in seven consecutive Indianapolis 500 mile races, 66 CART/PPG Indy Car World Series races over a 10-year span, as well as five 24 Hours of Daytona events and the 1989 24 Hours of LeMans. Kitch is well known and respected in the racing community and automotive industry. Accruing over 200 professional and amateur racing starts, Kitch has involved himself in every aspect of the driving industry, including instructing, driver coaching, marketing, team management, and television commentary. In 1997, Kitch founded Team Seattle, an effort to race the 24 Hours of Daytona and collect pledges per lap as a fundraiser for Children s Hospital & Regional Medical Center. What began as a single-year effort hasn t slowed down since. Team Seattle has won the 24 Hours of Daytona twice and its total fundraising for Children s has been more than $4 million. In 2009 Team Seattle raced in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Man s, finishing the race 9 th in class and raising over $260,000 for Seattle Children s. In 2010 Team Seattle was back at 24 Hours of Daytona, raising over $400,000 for Children s. Past IROE participants have come from many diverse companies - from software and development to frozen foods to banking. One competitor and contributor said, The day was as exciting as my first professional race, from the brand new, high-performance Mercedes-Benz to the outstanding, professional celebrity staff. Best of all, each participant felt like a winner at the end of the day because of the money raised to help the kids at Children s Hospital. This first guild was dedicated to establishing the first health-care facility devoted to children in Seattle and on the West Coast. Incorporated in 1987 as a nonprofit organization and a subsidiary of Children s Health Care System, the Guild Association s mission is to serve as an advocate, through volunteer, philanthropic and educational endeavors, to ensure excellent care for all children in our region.
