This is the first time since Aug. 27-28 that the Lady Buffs will have played more than a single match at home and is the first of a nine-match homestand. Two Lone Star Conference teams will participate in the tournament but WTAMU will only face TAMU-Commerce. The Tournament begins Thursday night with Eastern New Mexico University taking on Wayland Baptist University at 7 p.m., and resuming Friday at 10 a.m., with matches starting every two hours, with the final match slated for 8 p.m. Saturday s action tips-off at 11 a.m. with the last match scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday s matches will be at the WTAMU Fieldhouse, aka The Box, while Saturday s matches are at the WTAMU Event Center. See Pg. 2 for complete BritKare Lady Buff Challenge Schedule. The Teams The WTAMU Lady Buffs are 11-9 overall and 0-2 in LSC action. This is the worst record WTAMU has had in its first 20 matches since it went 4-16 back in 1986. This season seems to be the same story, just a different weekend. The Lady Buffs built some momentum at the LSC Crossover Tournament winning three-straight matches but couldn t sustain the momentum and have dropped their last two matches. Unfortunately the timing couldn t have been worse as those two matches were against LSC opponents. WTAMU lost to the Abilene Christian Wildcats Thursday, 3-0. This was the first time that the Lady Buffs had lost to ACU since 1993, snapping a 22-match winning streak. It also marked the first time that the Lady Buffs had been swept by an LSC Opponent since 1995, when WTAMU lost to Eastern New Mexico. Unfortunately it didn t get any better for the Lady Buffs as they were swept again by Angelo State just two days later. This loss marks the first time WTAMU has been swept by two consecutive LSC opponents since 1993 and the first back-to-back LSC losses since 1995. The Wayland Baptist University Pioneers carry a 3-14 overall record in this weekend s tournament and are 0-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Pioneers are coming off a season high as they won their last two matches outscoring their opponents six games to one. The St. Mary s University Rattlers are 13-5 on the season and are 3-1 in Heartland Conference action. The Rattlers have won 11 of their last 13 matches with the latest victory coming at the hands of St. Edward s University in a 3-1 effort. The Oklahoma Panhandle State University Lady Aggies enter the tournament with an 0-8 overall record and are 0-5 in the Heartland Conference. The Lady Aggies have had the misfortune of being swept in all eight matches this season. The Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions are currently 2-15 on the year, 0-3 in Lone Star Conference play and find themselves at the bottom of the LSC North division. The Lions last victory was a 3-1 effort and came at the hands of LSC rival Texas A&M University-Kingsville back on Sept. 24. The Eastern New Mexico University Zias are currently 12-5 on the year, 0-2 in LSC South action and find themselves sitting just above WTAMU in the division standings. The Zias longest winning streak of the season began Sept. 4 against the University of West Florida and lasted eight matches until they lost to Midwestern State on Sept. 24. They are currently on a two-match losing streak as they, like WTAMU, lost to Angelo State and Abilene Christian last week, dropping five-game decisions in both matches. MORE

The Coaches WTAMU head coach Tony Graystone (Grand Valley State, 1992) enters his sixth season at the helm of the Lady Buffs as both WTAMU s all-time winningest active head coach and the winningest head coach in the NCAA-II by percentage (176 wins, 27 losses,.867). Graystone was the fastest coach to reach 100 wins in the history of the NCAA. He achieved the accomplishment in only 106 matches. The next closest to reach 100 wins was Gil Dobie, who coached Boston College football, reaching the milestone in 108 games. Last year WTAMU was 29-8, a successful season by most teams standards, but not exactly for the Lady Buffs, especially under the tutelage of head coach Tony Graystone, as it was the first season that the Lady Buffs didn t reach the 30-win plateau in Graystone s five seasons, and nearly doubled his total losses, as Graystone had 10 losses combined in his previous four seasons combined and eight last year. Wayland Baptist is coached by Kristee Turpin (Wayland Baptist, 2000), who is in her fourth season leading the WBU volleyball program. Her career coaching record stands at 51-74, including 3-14 so far this season. Turpin is a former WBU standout player, setting several Pioneer career records. St. Mary s head coach Todd Caughlin (Athabasca University, Canada, 1997) is in his fourth year at the helm of the Rattlers. Caughlin has earned an 84-52 record at St. Mary s and holds a 115-76 all-time head coaching record. Oklahoma Panhandle State is coached by Cindy Hughes (Ozark Christian College and OPSU). Hughes is in her first year as head coach for the Pioneers. Texas A&M-Commerce head coach Gwendolyn Adams (Texas A&M-Commerce, 1998) is in her second year as head coach of the Lions and has compiled a 17-31 overall record at TAMU-Commerce. Adams has an career head coaching record of 43-58 in four years. Eastern New Mexico is coached by Mike Maguire (Mesa State College, 1981) who is in his 19th season as a collegiate head coach and is in his 18th season with the Zias. Maguire has compiled a 365-219 record with ENMU and a 380-234 career coaching record. WTAMU vs. Tournament Opponents The Lady Buffs lead 5-0 in the all-time series match-ups with Wayland Baptist. WTAMU faced WBU mid-season in 2003 and swept that meeting, not allowing the Pioneers to score more than 22 points in a single game. WTAMU holds a 6-1 lead in the all-time series meetings with St. Mary s with the lone loss coming during the first meeting in 2003. The Lady Buffs played the Rattlers twice last year with St. Mary s taking the first match in four games, but WTAMU rebounded to sweep St. Mary s at the WTAMU Tournament late in the season. The Lady Buffs have not seen much action against Oklahoma Panhandle State but have a perfect record as they have defeated them all four times they ve faced off. The last time these teams met was last year in the WTAMU Tournament where the Lady Buffs swept OPSU, holding them to only 43 points during the entire match. The Lady Buffs have faced LSC North opponent Texas A&M-Commerce 29 times and holds a 23-7 advantage in all-time match-ups. This will be the second meeting between the Lions and Lady Buffs, as they met back on Sept. 24 at the LSC Crossover Tournament, with WTAMU winning in three games. Sophomore Rachel Altman (5-9, rightside hitter) has quietly been creeping up the ladder this season and is now just one kill shy of taking over second place on the team in kills. Altman tied a team-high 14 kills in this weekends disappointing efforts at LSC foes Abilene Christian and Angelo State. Again Altman was counted on in the back row recording 16 digs throughout the two outings. Altman has tallied 184 kills (2.59 kpg),.168 attacking percentage, 19 service aces, 192 digs (2.70 dpg) 38 total blocks. Cynthia Carter, a 6-0 junior middle blocker is finding her stride again after missing five matches due to injury. After only two matches back, Carter has tallied 14 kills, two digs and three blocks. Carter is ranked fourth in the LSC standings in hitting percentage and is second on the team with 39 total blocks (0.80 bpg). Carter has recorded 119 kills (2.43 kpg), a.341 attacking percentage and 11 digs so far this season. Another strong performer this season is 5-8 sophomore outside hitter Jessica Scherr. In the LSC statistics, Scherr ranks eighth in digs (4.19 dpg/306 digs). Scherr also has 175 kills (2.40 kpg), a.140 attacking percentage, 16 service aces and 21 total blocks on the season. Organizing the attack for the Lady Buffs is 5-8 freshman setter Erin Houlihan, as she inches closer to the 1,000 assist mark with 885 assists (12.12 apg). Houlihan has been rewarded for this output by being ranked third in assists in the LSC statistics. Houlihan was named LSC South Setter of the Week on Sept. 28 for her explosive weekend at the LSC Crossover Tournament. In addition to her season assist mark, Houlihan has also recorded a team-high 20 service aces, 23 kills (0.32 kpg) and 18 blocks. Brittani Bell, a 5-3 junior libero has also performed well for the Lady Buffs this season. Her consistent play has earned her the second position in this week s LSC statistics as she has recorded 377 digs (5.16 dpg) in 73 matches. Along with her digs, Bell has also tallied 16 assists, 12 service aces and four kills. 2004 LONE STAR CONFERENCE TEAM STATISTICS - Oct. 5, 2004 Hitting Percentage G K-E-A Pct. 1. The St. Mary s Rattlers are 13-5 on the season and are 3-1 in Heartland Conference action. The Rattlers have won 11 of their last 13 matches with the latest victory coming over St. Edward s University in a 3-1 effort. St. Mary s began the year losing three of its first five matches before turning the season around winning eight matches before the next loss. Spencer has tallied a team-high 246 kills (3.90 kpg) and is ranked second on the team with 248 digs (3.94 dpg). She has also recorded 13 service aces and 25 total blocks. The freshman also leads her team with an outstanding 63 total blocks (0.97 bpg). The Oklahoma Panhandle State Lady Aggies enter the tournament with an 0-8 overall record and are 0-5 in the Heartland Conference. She is currently ranked second among her teammates with 14 service aces and 241 digs (3.60 dpg) and has recorded 24 total blocks this season. Lindsay Schiely (6-0, junior, middle blocker) is the only other team member over 200 kills. Schiely has tallied 204 kills (3.03 kpg) and a team-high.274 attacking percentage. She has also recorded eight service aces, and 57 total blocks (0.84 bpg). The blocking duties though are left up to Grace George (5-11, sophomore, middle blocker). George has recorded a whopping 78 total blocks (1.42 bpg), including 16 solo on the season. She leads the LSC in blocks and is in fact is the only player in the conference that meets the 1.00 bpg qualification requirements.
