TBA Mar Elite Eight TBA * LSC South Game ^ LSC South Division Games All Times Central Home Games in Bold and Played in the WTAMU Event Center The West Texas A&M University men s basketball team returns to the friendly confines of the WTAMU Event Center after a season-long five-game road trip and wraps up the regular season with a single game against the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas this Thursday, Feb. 24, at 8 p.m. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. following the Lady Buffs contest. Thursday will be Senior Night, as the Buffs will be honoring their four seniors: forwards Jason Campbell, Richard Higginbotham and Jamil Terrell, along with guard Carl Lamb. Also on Thursday, WTAMU will be introducing the new buffalo mascot, C.J., outside the Event Center, along with the retiring veteran, Sadee. WTAMU is currently sitting fourth in the Lone Star Conference South Division standings behind Midwestern State, Texas A&M-Kingville and Texas A&M-Commerce and can finish anywhere from second to fourth in the final standings and seedings for the tournament depending on the outcome of this weekend s action. 2 Texas A&M University-Kingsville is 16-9 overall and 7-3 in LSC South play, currently tied for second in the LSC South Division standings with Midwestern State. TAMU-Kingsville has won the last three of its last six outings, as the Javelinas upset TAMU-Commerce, 72-69, to begin their recent three game winning streak. Angelo State University, 86-64, and Abilene Christian University, 88-59, have also fell victim to the Javelinas wrath over the past weekend. The Coaches WTAMU head coach Rick Cooper (Wayland Baptist, 1981), who is in his 12th year at the helm of the Buffs, is WTAMU s all-time winningest head coach. Cooper became WTAMU s all-time winningest coach with the Buffs win at Southwestern Oklahoma on Jan. 8, 2004 for win No. 207, passing Sam Burton s 206 wins from With a (.671) record, Cooper currently is fourth on WTAMU s Best Winning Percentage list. {See WTAMU s coaching log on Page 7}. In his 18 years as a collegiate head coach, Cooper has a (.702) career record, ranking him 13th among active NCAA-II coaches for winning percentage. Cooper is also in the top 25 for total victories among active NCAA- II coaches. Cooper is also 20th on the NCAA-II all-time coaching list for winning percentage. Cooper is a three-time LSC Coach of the Year ( , , ), as well as NABC South Central Regional Coach of the Year ( ). The Buffs have won three LSC titles under Cooper and been to the NCAA Regional Tournament five times, including three in the last four years. Texas A&M-Kingsville head coach Rick Pete Peterson (Southwestern (Kan.) University, 1979), is in his eighth year at the helm of the Javelinas, maintaining a (.512) record. Peterson was last year s LSC South Coach of the Year, leading the Javelinas to the LSC Tournament semifinals, as well as the NCAA-II Regionals. 3 WTAMU is averaging under 20 turnovers a game (483 in 26 games, 18.6 pg), ranking 12th in the conference in turnover margin (-0.96). The Buffs remain on the plus side in rebounding advantage, improving to +1.9 ( ), moving to sixth in the league. The Buffs are led by 6-6 senior forward Jamil Terrell, who is averaging just under a double-double per outing (13.3 ppg, 9.7 rpg), and is adding 1.6 blocks per game as well. Terrell is third in the conference and 33rd in the nation in blocked shots with 42 (1.6 bpg), and also ranks third in the league and 19th in the country in rebounding and 18th in the conference in scoring. Terrell added 33 points to his season total over the weekend, grabbing 29 boards and blocking three shots in the Buffs three games. Senior Carl Lamb (6-2, guard) tallies 11.6 ppg, while leading the team with 72 assists (2.9 apg) and is 10th in the league for 3-point field goals made (49, 2.04). Lamb netted a combined 48 points, shooting 17-of-35 from the field, and 5-of-17 from the arc while dishing out a eight assists in WTAMU s three games last weekend. Guard Govinda Thomas-Carter (junior, 6-3) also adds 7.9 ppg, and is a team-best 41-of-48 (.854) from the free throw line on the season, which would rank third in the league, but he doesn t meet the 2.0 made per game requirement. Thomas-Carter is shooting 61-of-163 (.374) from the field, including 34-of-96 (.354) from 3-point land. Carlos Silva, a 6-9 senior forward, is fifth in the LSC in blocked shots (1.6 bpg) while adding 6.7 ppg and 3.5 rpg. Silva recorded a career-high with 25 points in the win over ENMU, including 18 in the second half, to go with his gamehigh three blocked shots. Senior 6-7 forward Richard Higginbotham leads the team from 3-point land, shooting 26-of-68 (.382). Higginbotham is averaging 5.9 ppg and 3.0 rpg and netted a combined 21 points, seven rebounds and one blocked shot. He tied a career-high by dishing out five assists in the win over ENMU. WTAMU At Home WTAMU is 8-5 (.615) at home this season. Overall, the Buffs are (.696) at the WTAMU Event Center, and have won 11 of their last 15 home games. WTAMU s longest home win streak at the WTAMU Event Center is six games, including the last five home games of the season and the first home game last season. About TAMU-Kingsville Texas A&M University-Kingsville is 16-9 overall and 7-3 in LSC South play, currently tied for second in the LSC South Division standings with Midwestern State. 4 Among the conference statistics, TAMU-Kingsville ranks third in assists (389, 15.56), eighth in scoring offense (72.4 ppg), and seventh in scoring defense (67.7 ppg). The +4.7 scoring margin places the Javelinas in the seventh spot in the league. Kingsville is fifth in 3-point percentage (.363) and rebounding margin ( , +2.4). Senior 6-5 guard Robert Hamilton leads the Javelinas offense as he averages 15.8 points per game, and is eighth in the conference in scoring (395 points), along with leading the LSC and ranking seventh in the nation in rebounds with 10.9 rpg, and is 51-of-79 from the free throw line (.646). He is sixth in the conference in steals (43, 1.72) and in a four-way tie for 12th in the league with 18 blocked shots (0.72 bpg). Hamilton netted a combined 47 points going 19-of-41 from the field and 7-of-10 from the line against ASU and ACU in the Javelinas two victories. He added 29 rebounds and a game-high six steals against ACU Saturday. Against the Buffs earlier this season, Hamilton was held to 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds, a team-high five assists, three blocked shots and two steals in TAMU-K s win over WTAMU. Richard Gonzalez, a 6-3 senior guard, is second on the team in points with 14.1 ppg, 3.8 apg (99 assists) and is third in rebounding, 5.2 rpg. Gonzalez is ranked 16th in the conference in scoring (14.1 ppg), fifth in both assists (99, 3.96 apg) and steals (44, 1.76 spg), 13th in assist/ turnover ratio (1.04) and 19th in rebounding (131, 5.2 rpg). Against the Wildcats and Rams, Gonzalez posted 20 points, going 7-of-15 from the field, 4-of-8 from the arc and grabbing eight rebounds. In the last game against WTAMU, Gonzalez had a team-high 15 points, adding two rebounds four assists, three blocks and one steal. Junior 6-0 guard, Quendale Allensworth, is contributing 12.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg and leads TAMU-K and is fourth in the league with 113 assists (4.5 apg). He is also 24th in the LSC in scoring, fifth in assist/turnover ratio (1.59) and 14th in 3-point field goals made (44, 1.76). Last game, Allensworth recorded 15 points over the two games, grabbing nine rebounds, 11 assists and one steal. In Kingsville s win against the Buffs back on Jan. 27, Allensworth netted 13 points, grabbed two rebounds, assists and earned one steal. Eddie Lopez, a 6-1 junior guard leads TAMU-K and the conference in free throws going 67-of-77 from the line (.870) which is ninth in the country, while posting 11.6 ppg and 1.8 rpg. He is eighth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage.423 (52-123) and ninth in 3-point field goals made (52, 2.08). Over the past weekend, Lopez netted a combined 45 points, 11 assists (a game-high nine against ASU), and two steals. In his last game against the Buffs earlier this season, Lopez netted 29 points, three rebounds, assists, one blocked shot and one steal. 5 WTAMU - TAMU-Kingsville Series History WTAMU leads the all-time series between the two teams 28-18, as the earlier this season, the Buffaloes lost to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 66-58, on the road marking the fifth loss to the Javelinas in the last six games at Kingsville. Their last win dates back to 1999 with an victory. The Buffs have been rude hosts to the Javelinas, as WTAMU has won four of the last five visits that TAMU-K the Javelinas have made to the WTAMU Event Center, with the last loss coming in the 2002 season, In last year s meeting at Canyon, the Buffs rode the coattails of its seniors on Senior Night to hang on and upset division frontrunner TAMU-Kingsville in a thrilling Lone Star Conference South division contest Saturday night in the Buffs regular-season home finale at the WTAMU Event Center. Last year s meeting was also WTAMU s Senior Night, and all three made a dramatic impact on the game. Four WTAMU starters posted double figures, led by senior guard Rod Prater s game-high 23 points, 14 in the second half. Senior guard Eduardo Caviglia added 20 points, followed by Jason Campbell s 18 points and junior guard Carl Lamb s 10. Campbell also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to register his second doubledouble of the season. TAMU-K also had four players in double-digits, led by Robert Hamilton with 19 points, while Jamie Barnett added 18 and Erik Webb added 14 points off the bench. Will Brown, who lit up Eastern New Mexico for 46 points in the previous game, including 27 points in the first half, was held scoreless for the first half and scored his first points at the 13:26 mark and finished with 10 points. In this year s first meeting, WTAMU continued two trends in the Buffs loss at TAMU-Kingsville. WTAMU continued its poor shooting and the Buffs lost at Kingsville for the fifth-consecutive time. WTAMU continued its win-loss pattern of the last eight games, in losing for the fourth time in the last seven games, while TAMU-K won its third in a row and five of the last six. WTAMU, which had its only lead of the game at 2-0, was led by 14 points from senior forward Jamil Terrell, including 12 in the second half, while junior guard Govinda Thomas-Carter added 11 points. Senior guard Carl Lamb snared a career-high and game-high 11 rebounds, as WTAMU held a rebounding advantage, including 17 on the offensive end. TAMU-K had four starters in double-digits, led by Richard Gonzalez with 15 points, while Quendale Allensworth added 13 points, all in the second half. Robert Hamilton tallied 11 points to go with a team-high eight rebounds and five assists, while Juan Lanauze added 10 points. 6 WTAMU s Last Game: Buffs Hold On To Stop The Greyhounds, 81-78, Monday WTAMU Clinches Spot In LSC Tournament With Win And Sweep Season Series For First Time Since ; Silva Posts Career-High 25 Points PORTALES, N.M. --- The West Texas A&M University men s basketball team held on for an win over Eastern New Mexico University Monday night in a Lone Star Conference South Division clash at ENMU s Greyhound Arena. The win clinches a berth in the LSC Tournament for the Buffs and was their first win over ENMU in three years, but it was on the same court that the Buffs won the 2003 LSC Tournament title. It was WTAMU s first season sweep over ENMU since the season and improve to in the all-time series history. The Buffs improve to overall and 7-4 in the LSC South and can finish anywhere from second to fourth in the division, entering the final weekend of the season. WTAMU ends the regular season at home on Thursday, Feb. 24 against Texas A&M University-Kingsville at 8 p.m. ENMU lost for the ninth time in the last 11 games, falling to 9-17 overall and 2-9 in LSC South play. The Buffs four seniors all had major contributions in their final regular season road game of the year, led by senior forward Carlos Silva who posted a career-high with 25 points, including 18 in the second half, along with a gamehigh three blocks. Senior guard Carl Lamb tallied 11 points, while senior forward Jamil Terrell was one of three players with eight points to go with his team-high 11 rebounds. Senior forward Richard Higginbotham also tallied eight points to go with tying a career-high five assists. ENMU was led by Jamaal Hunnicutt, an Amarillo, Texas, native, with a career-high 30 points, and registered a doubledouble with a game-high 13 rebounds. Jolen Montoya netted 14 points, while Irshaun Pinckney chipped in with 13 points. WTAMU shot 53.6 percent (30-of-56) from the field for the game, including a blistering 63.0 percent (17-of-27) in the second half. The Buffs were also 5-of-15 (33.3 percent) from 3- point land and 59.3 percent (16-of-27) from the free throw line.
