WTAMU is 8-0 for the first time in school history, while ASU is 7-1, the Rams best start since Kickoff for Saturday s clash is set for 6 p.m. at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium (Capacity: 20,000). A crowd of roughly 16-18,000 is expected for WTAMU s final home regularseason game. The Buffaloes will be honoring their 12 seniors in a pre-game ceremony. WTAMU leads the nation in attendance, averaging 13,224 per home game, with an LSC and Kimbrough Memorial Stadium record crowd of 22,993 at the OT thriller over Eastern New Mexico University on Oct. 8 in the annual Wagon Wheel Game on WTAMU s Homecoming. Both ASU and WTAMU have far exceeded expectations and proved the division wrong, as ASU was picked sixth and WTAMU tabbed last at seventh in the LSC South Preseason Poll, and yet Saturday s showdown has division title implications, as a Buffalo victory would solidify a share of the division title, while a Ram victory would create a logjam at the top of the division standings between ASU, WTAMU and Tarleton State University with two games to go. The two teams won a combined four games last year, as ASU was 2-9 and WTAMU went 2-8. This year is a different story, as the Buffaloes are 8-0 for the first time in the program s history, dating back to 1910, and surpassing their win output for the previous four seasons combined (2-8 in 2004, 3-8 in 03, 0-11 in 02, 2-9 in 01). Meanwhile, the Rams have been giving fans their money s worth, with five of their eight games being decided in the fourth quarter, and three of those five decided in the final two minutes of the game. Four of ASU s victories are by a combined 11 points, all by four points or less. The Buffaloes dropped the Wildcats of Abilene Christian University, 40-24, at Abilene last Saturday, spoiling ACU s 100-year Anniversary Homecoming. WTAMU used a pair of quick strikes, scoring four TDs in a total span of 25 seconds apart, as the Buffaloes scored two in the final 20 seconds of the first half and two more in a span of five seconds in the fourth quarter to break the game open after ACU had closed to The Rams had a successful Homecoming as they trampled Northeastern State University, ASU rang up 464 yards of offense in the process, with a balanced split between rush and pass, as the Rams has 253 yards on the ground with four TDs, while tallying 211 yards through the air with three TDs. Defensively, the Rams held the Redmen to just 277 total yards. WTAMU is ranked No. 7 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches Poll, the highest rating ever for the Buffaloes in the poll, while ASU is right on the edge of the Top 25, as the Rams are first among others receiving votes, a group that ASU has been in since Sept. 20 after the fourth week of the season. In the NCAA-II Southwest Regional Rankings, which determine the six-team playoff field, WTAMU is No. 2, while ASU is No. 9. {See Page 5 For Complete AFCA Poll and Region Rankings}. MORE

2 Carthel Connections? You Betcha For the third game in a row, WTAMU head coach Don Carthel has some sort of tie to this week s opponent. This time, the connection is that Carthel s son Colby, part of last week s connection as he s an assistant coach (defensive line/recruiting coordinator) at Abilene Christian, played linebacker at Angelo State from , helping the Rams to a LSC South title in 99. Carthel also has connections to ASU in that Ram assistant coach (Offensive Line/ Recruiting Coordinator) Hank McClung played for Carthel during Carthel s tenure at Lubbock Christian University in , and was an assistant coach on Carthel s staff at Eastern New Mexico in , playing the unique role of coach/player, as McClung was the long snapper for the Greyhounds. McClung was head coach at Midwestern State University, taking over part way through the 1995 season and coaching through the 1998 campaign, compiling a (.286) ledger at MSU, including 0-3 vs. WTAMU. WTAMU is seventh in scoring defense, yielding 26.4 ppg. The Buffalo defense is second in the LSC in pass defense efficiency (97.2). ASU is ninth in the conference in total offense (374.8 ypg), ranking fifth in the league rushing offense (176.6 ypg) and ninth in passing offense (198.1 ypg). The ASU defense leads the league in sacks with 24 (8.0 sacks/game) for 163 yards, while the WTAMU offense is second in the conference in sacks against, giving up just seven (0.88 pg). Quinonez are all local standouts, as Felton and Quinonez are former Randall HS Raiders and Davis is a former Amarillo HS Sandie. Third in Five: The fifth-year senior trio of DL Darrell Lewis, RB/DB Dominique Bibben and TE/DE Pat Lindsey, as well as linebackers coach Rich Renner have been under three head coaches, Stan McGarvey, Ronnie Jones ( ) and now Carthel... senior LB Chad Webster has also played under all three coaches, as Webster left WTAMU for the 2002 season. Last Game-Oct. 15: #10 WTAMU Goes To 8-0 For First-Time Ever With Win Over Abilene Christian Buffaloes Spoil Wildcats 100-Year Anniversary Homecoming By Breaking Game Open With Quick Strikes ABILENE, Texas Never before has a West Texas A&M University Buffalo football team been able to tote such a record until this season, as No. 10 WTAMU defeated Abilene Christian University, 40-24, Saturday afternoon in a Lone Star Conference at ACU s Shotwell Stadium. The Buffaloes spoiled ACU s 100-Year Anniversary Homecoming, in front of a crowd of 10,000. The Buffaloes improve to 8-0 overall, 6-0 in LSC and 4-0 in South Division play. ACU lost its fourth-straight and falls to 2-5 overall, 2-4 LSC and 0-3 in South action. It is the first 8-0 start to a season ever in WTAMU s history and is only the third eight-game winning streak in school history, as the Buffaloes won eight games overlapping the 1918 and 1919 seasons, and the 1940 and 1941 seasons, when they won nine games in a row. WTAMU scored four TDs in a total time of 25 seconds apart, as the Buffaloes scored two in the final 20 seconds of the first half and two more in a span of five seconds in the fourth quarter to break the game open after ACU had closed to Saturday was a Family Feud of sorts, as WTAMU head coach Don Carthel was facing his son, Colby Carthel, ACU s defensive line coach, from the opposite sideline for the first time ever, after coaching alongside him for four years when the elder Carthel was a volunteer for the Wildcats. Buffalo assistant coach Cody Farrell was also coaching against his brothers, ACU DE Clayton Farrell and TE Clinton Farrell. The Buffaloes amassed 436 yards of offense, going 8-of-17 on 3rd-down conversions and 4-of-4 in the red zone, improving to 36-of-39 on the season. ACU had 297 yards, the third-lowest total allowed by the WTAMU defense, including just 103 yards in the second half. The Buffaloes had a 36:50-23:10 time of possession advantage, which is the longest WTAMU has possessed the ball this season. In the first quarter alone, the Buffaloes held the ball for 11:13 of the 15:00. Redshirt freshman back-up QB Keith Null had a successful debut, filling in for starting QB Dalton Bell, as Null was 33-of-54 for 336 yards with one TD. Bell suffered a concussion last week and was held out as a precaution. Junior TB Maurice White was a workhorse for the Buffaloes, as he had 24 carries for 119 yards and three TDs, as well as nine catches for 50 yards, one of seven WTAMU receivers to catch a pass, including junior TE/QB Hunter Wall s first reception of the season. Senior WR Tonae Martin had seven catches for 119 yards and one TD, while junior WR Shaun Scott-Jones had four catches for 61 yards. Junior LB Max Steward had seven solo tackles, a 52-yard interception return for a TD in the final play of the first half, as well as forcing a fumble after ACU had closed to that WTAMU took and drove the field and scored. Sophomore DB Jeremy Hibbler posted a game-high 10 tackles (6 solo), including one tackle for loss on a sack and one pass break-up. Null was 4-of-6 for 64 yards on his first drive as a starter, as the Buffaloes past on their first six plays, getting down the ACU 4, before junior TB Maurice White had two rushes, the last a 1-yard scamper over right tackle and Felton s upright split made it 7-0 WTAMU just 2: 52 into the game. ACU quickly responded, as Taber Minner scored on a 41-yard burst up the middle on a 4th-and-inches and Matt Adams PAT knotted the score at 7 s at the 9:15 mark of the first quarter. The Buffaloes marched down the field, executing a 12 play, 67-yard drive that ate up 4:26 of the clock, grinding the time down to 4:49 left in the first stanza as White scored on another 1-yard plunge and Felton s extra point put WTAMU on top, After the Buffalo defense held and forced a Wildcat punt, WTAMU drove to the ACU 33, but Felton s 50-yard field goal attempt was wide right. The Wildcats ate up the remainder of the first quarter and just over the first two minutes of the second, as Malone hit John Brock for an 8-yard TD pass and Adams kicked the PAT to make it with 12:53 left in the half. After the ACU defense held and forced another Felton punt, the Wildcats drove to the Buffaloes 2-yard line, but the WTAMU defense held on downs, breaking up a 4th-down pass attempt. WTAMU drove the length of the field, as Null hit Martin for a 13-yard strike, capping the98-yard, 14-play drive, but after two penalties on the Buffaloes, Felton missed the extra long extra point to the right, leaving WTAMU ahead with only 20 ticks left in the game. ACU tried to move the ball down the field, but senior DE Pat Lindsey put pressure on Malone, forcing an ill-advised pass that junior LB Max Steward picked off and returned 52 yards for a TD as time expired. Felton over corrected and missed the PAT to the left, sending the teams to the locker room with the Buffaloes on top, Null was 20-of-32 for 186 yards and the TD pass to Martin, who had six catches for 88 yards in the opening half. After a scoreless third quarter, ACU opened the fourth quarter with a 29-yard Adams field goal to pull within, 26-17, with 14:02 left in the game. On WTAMU s first play of the ensuing possession, Null botched the snap, and ACU recovered. The next play, back-up QB Nick Bird hit Jonathan Feguson from 11 yards out and Adams kicked the PAT to make it with 13:44 to play. The Buffaloes punted on their next drive and ACU took over, driving to the WTAMU 38, where Steward jarred the ball loose from Bird and freshman ROV Michael Brisco recovered. WTAMU drove the field and White scored his third TD of the game, going in from 2-yards out with 7:37 to play, and Felton s PAT made it On the ensuing kickoff, ACU tried some razzle-dazzle, as Jerale Badon fielded the kick, and tried to lateral pass back to Danieal Manning, the Wildcats return specialist extraordinaire, but junior DB Brian Cooper stepped in front of the backwards pass and returned it 15 yards to the endzone for WTAMU s second TD in a span of five seconds, and Felton drilled the extra point for a Buffalo lead with 7:32 left. The WTAMU defense held solid twice in the final minutes, as ACU turned the ball over on downs, the last with 1:26 to play, and the Buffaloes ran out the clock, with Null taking a knee on the final two plays to preserve WTAMU s historic win. #7 WTAMU Puts First-Ever 8-0 Record On Line Against 7-1 ASU Saturday With LSC South Title At Stake - Page 9

11 Steward And Cooper Collect LSC South Player of the Week Awards Junior LB Steward Shares Defensive Honors, While Junior DB Cooper Receives Special Teams Honors, For Roles In #10 WTAMU s Win Over ACU For the third time this season, the West Texas A&M University football team had two players collect Lone Star Conference South Division Player of the Week Awards, as this week Max Steward was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Week, while Brian Cooper collected the Special Teams Award, announced by the conference office today (Oct. 16). The pair of Buffaloes were recognized for their roles in #10 WTAMU s win Saturday over Abilene Christian University, as the Buffaloes improved to 8-0 for the first time ever and have just the third-ever eight-game winning streak. Steward, a 6-1, 220, junior LB from Visalia, Calif., had seven solo tackles, as well as a 52-yard interception return for a TD in the final play of the first half to put WTAMU ahead at half. On top of all that, Steward also forced a fumble after ACU had closed to that helped the Buffaloes break the game open as WTAMU took and drove the field and scored, and then scored again on the ensuing kick return. Cooper, a junior DB from Bakersfield, Calif., had a 15-yard fumble return/lateral interception on an ACU kick return attempt for a TD to help WTAMU break the game open. After ACU had closed to 26-24, WTAMU recovered a fumble and drove down and scored, and then on the ensuing kick return, ACU tried a lateral pass, and Cooper stepped in front of the intended lateral for Danieal Manning and returned it 15 yards for the TD to make it This is the third time that a pair of WTAMU players have received a Player of the Week Award the same week, as the Buffaloes have now collected eight of the weekly awards, compared to five in the previous four seasons combined (one last year, three in 2003, one in 02, none in 01). Steward shares the Defensive award with Tarleton State University DB Renardrick Phillips, who had 16 tackles in helping TSU defeat Eastern New Mexico University, 34-37, Saturday night, for the Texans first-ever win at Blackwater Draw, N.M. The Offensive Player of the Week Awards were shared between Tarleton State RB Derek Ross, who had 212 yards rushing and four TDs, and Midwestern State University RB Ulysses Odoms, who had 132 yards on just 11 carries (11.0 ypc) in helping MSU upset No. 9 Texas A&M University-Kingsville, 41-14, Saturday night at Wichita Falls, Texas. Bell And Felton Honored By Both Don Hansen s Football Gazette As National Players of Week And LSC For LSC Offensive And Special Teams Accolades Duo Recognized By National Publication; Two Of Nine Division II Players Honored West Texas A&M University kicker/punter Jacob Felton and quarterback Dalton Bell were recognized by Don Hansen s Football Gazette with National Players of the Week Awards, as well as the LSC South Special Teams and Offensive Player of the Week honors, respectively. The duo were acknowledged for their play in then-#22 WTAMU s wild, 47-44, win over Midwestern State University this past Saturday, in which the Buffaloes rallied from down as much as The pair of Buffaloes were two of nine Division II players honored by the national publication, a recognized authority on small college football, which also selects preseason and postseason All-American Teams. It was Bell s third LSC South Player of the Week Award this season, and Felton s second, as the duo were acknowledged together on Sept. 11 after WTAMU s upset win over then-#24 Central Oklahoma. Felton, a 6-0, 200, senior, is a local talent, as the Amarillo, Texas native kicked the game-winning 27-yard field goal as time expired, one of his four FGs in the final 17:01 of the game (a 24-yarder at 2:01-3Q, 22-yarder at 14:00-4Q, 30-yarder at 12:39-4Q, 27-yarder at 0:00-4Q). Felton now has 11 FGs on the season, tying WTAMU single-season FG record, held by four people, and is on pace to break singleseason LSC record of 18. He also extends WTAMU career record holder mark, as he now has 29 career FGs. In Saturday s win, Felton accounted for 15 points, as he also was 3-of-4 on PATs, extending his school career record to 101 PATs. Felton also had four punts for a 42.2 average with a long of 52 yards and one inside the 20, with a net punt average of 45.0 yards, as the one return attempt by MSU bounced of returner Gary Elliott for a 10 yard loss and WTAMU recovered, setting up the Buffaloes first score of the game. Bell, a 6-3, 195, junior homegrown talent from Canyon, Texas, was 40-of-52 (.769) for 452 yards, with three TDs in WTAMU s win - including going 5-of-5 in the final drive. He also had six rushes for 21 yards, with the most important yard coming on a scamper to get the ball in middle of field for lining up Felton s game-winning kick. The 40 completions is a personal career high, and three off of Derek Maupin s school and LSC record 43, while the 52 attempts is a career high. Bell s 452 yards is 11 shy of his career high, set at UCO on Sept. 10, and is Bell s fourth 300+ yard passing outing. Buffalo Sports Luncheons The Buffalo Sports Luncheon are on Monday s at Noon at the Holiday Inn-Amarillo, I-40 East and Ross.
