1 2002 NCAA DII Football National Champions GRAND VALLEY STATE LAKER FOOTBALL NCAA DII Football National Champions THE GAME: Grand Valley State, the two-time NCAA Division II Football National Champions, will continue their playoff run with their 14th road game in the last 18 games overall. GVSU, which has advanced to the NCAA DII playoffs for the fourth straight year, has won nine straight playoff games and 12 of its last 13. The Lakers have also won five straight playoff road games. GVSU is looking for its third straight win over a top 10 team. GVSU defeated #4 Michigan Tech (24-7) and #8 Wi n o n a State the previous two weeks. TH E SE R I E S: Grand Valley State leads the all-time series with Northwood by a margin. However, Northwood claimed a decision in Allendale earlier this season. GVSU claimed a victory over the Timberwolves last season in Midland. Northwood is 3-2 versus Grand Valley State in the last five meetings. The GVSU senior class enters today s game with a career mark of 50-4, including a 23-1 road record. The Laker seniors completed their four year career with a 35-3 record in GLIAC action. Finnerty is eighth in all-time passing yards (4,885) and total offense (6,115) at GVSU...Finnerty has rushed for 1,230 yards in 25 career games (48.3 ypg). Cullen completed 10-of-20 passes for 112 yards at Winona State...Rushed for 40 yards and the game-winning TD in the fourth quarter. Completed 6-9 passes for 37 yards and a TD versus Michigan Tech and rushed for 79 yards on 13 carries. Cullen completed 8-of-13 passes for 264 yards and three TDs at Northern Michigan. He set a GVSU single-game record for yards per completion average (33.0 ypr). Finnerty completed 13-of-26 passes for 230 yards, two TDs and two interceptions at Saginaw Valley State. Rushed for 89 yards on 16 carries, moving him past the 1,000-yard career mark. Completed 24-of-34 passes for 245 yards and three TDs against Hillsdale. Cullen completed 22-of-35 passes for 391 yards and a career-high five TDs at Gannon (9/4). Finnerty s 391 passing yards was the second-best total in his career. He passed for 399 yards vs. Michigan Tech in RB Michael Tennessee 2003 First-Team All-GLIAC Tennessee leads the Laker rushing attack with 663 rushing yards and five TDs on 157 carries...currently ranks second in all-time rushing yards at GVSU with 3,424 yards. Needs 45 yards to pass former Laker Reggie S p e a r m o n s total of 3,467...Te n n e s s e e set the GVSU career record for carries (719) last week at Winona State. Reggie Spearmon held the record with 716. Michael has broke the 100-yard rushing mark three times this season and 12 times in his career. He is averaging yards per game when he has 20 or more carries. Mike has played in played five full games this season. Tallied 100 yards on 23 carries at Winona State in playoff action. Broke the 100 yard rushing mark for the first time since the opening game of the season with a 107 yards and two TDs on 20 carries vs. Michigan Tech...Tallied a season-best 45 yard run for a TD. Tennessee rushed for 88 yards and two TDs on 21 carries at NMU. He toted the ball 20 times for 96 yards and a TD vs. Indianapolis before leaving in the third quarter with an injury... Michael rushed for a season-high 154 yards on 39 carries vs. Ferris State. Michael is 5th in all-time, allpurpose yards with 4,074...Te n n e s s e e is 13th in all-time receptions with 80. Tennessee is 10th in all-time points with 198. WR Demonte Collins 2004 GLIAC Freshman of the Year Freshman WR Demonte Collins leads GVSU in receptions (66), yards (919) and receiving TDs (12) this season. The receptions and yards are single-season freshman records. Demonte was held without a TD catch at Winona State, yielding his streak of consecutive game with a TD reception at 10. Collins has reached the 100-yard receiving mark three times in his 11 career games.

3 It took all of two games for Collins to make his mark in Grand Valley State football history. Collins hauled in 13 catches for 217 yards and three TDs at Gannon (9/4/04). His 13 catches set a GVSU single-game record, breaking the old mark of 11 that was held by David Kircus. Collins made the most of his first career reception for the Lakers when he hauled in a 33-yard TD catch on fourth down for the first catch of his career at Ferris State (8/28) in the first quarter. Collins caught five passes for 87 yards at Winona State. He hauled in two receptions for 37 yards on the Lakers game-winning TD drive in the 4th Qrt. Demonte caught just two passes for 84 yards in the Lakers last two regular season games, however both went for TDs (47-and-37 yards). Demonte notched a 9-catch, 60-yard outing with one TD vs. Northwood... Demonte tallied a 12-catch, 158-yard and one TD outing versus Hillsdale... WR Brandon Langston (Spec. & Rec.) Brandon Langston ranks first in allpurpose yards for GVSU with 1,11 5 (101.4 ypg). Langston ranks second on the team in receptions (44), receiving yards (614) and TD catches (9)...Brandon has 168 rushing yards and one TD on 22 carries...returned 10 kickoffs for 333 yards (33.3) and one TD. Posted two 100-yard receiving games and one 100-yard rushing game...brandon rushed for 105 yards on 11 carries vs. MTU at Michigan Stadium...Langston is averaging 15.9 yards per every touch of the football. Langston caught five passes for 170 yards and two TDs, while rushing for 35 yards on four carries at Northern Michigan. Caught five passes for 149 yards and two TDs at Gannon. Returned two k i c k o ffs for 111 yards, including a 92 LAKER BYTES yard kickoff return for a TD. Grand Valley State is a +10 in turnover margin this season with 27 takeaways. The Lakers have picked off 18 passes and recovered nine fumbles on the year. GVSU was a -6 in turnover margin in its two losses this season. Grand Valley State has held 6-of-11 teams to under 100 yards rushing this season. In addition, the Lakers have held each of their last five playoff opponents under the 50 yard mark. Team Att. The starting secondary for GVSU has 37 career interceptions entering today s game. DB Lucius Hawkins 2004 Defensive Back of the Year Lucius Hawkins moved into third place in career interceptions (12) with his sixth of the season at Wi n o n a State. His single-season total of six INT s is also the third-best in Laker annals. Lucius has 63 total tackles, seven TFL (-30) and eight pass deflections in Hawkins has 207 career tackles, 23 tackles for loss (-135), 10 QB sacks (- 77), 27 pass deflections and six fumble recoveries. DB Marvis Bryant 2004 Second-Team All-GLIAC Bryant picked off the 10th pass of his career and the fifth this season at Northern Michigan to move into sixth on the all-time INT list...bryant has a c a r e e r-high 60 tackles this season...marvis also has 251 return yards and two TDs. DB Derrick Phillips 2004 HM All-GLIAC 2003 First-Team All-GLIAC Derrick Phillips enters today s game with seven career INTs, including two this season...phillips set a GVSU singleseason record for pass breakups a year ago with 13 and has 17 in his career. DT Keyonta Marshall 2003 First-Team All-GLIAC 2002 First-Team All-GLIAC 2002, 2003 and 2004 GLIAC Defensive Lineman of the Year All-American defensive tackle Keyonta Marshall has 53 total tackles, including a team-high 23 tackles for loss (-65) and eight QB sacks (-40). Marshall has 215 career tackles, 61.5 TFL (-222), 26 QB sacks (-125), 11 pass deflections, seven fumble recoveries and six forced fumbles. His 26 sacks is tied for second with Matt Potter and three behind Joe Huhn s 29. Marshall tallied 12 total tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss (-17), one QB sack (-8) and a forced fumble at Saginaw Valley State. Tallied a four tackle performance vs. Hillsdale in which he tallied three tackles for loss (-15) and two QB sacks (-10). Recorded four tackles, inlcuding three TFL (-6) at Winona State. Marshall recorded three tackles, a blocked PAT, a pass deflection and a 1/2 QB sack versus Indianapolis. DB DeJuane Boone DeJuane Boone leads the Lakers in total tackles with 86...Boone also has nine tackles for loss (-22), two interceptions and three pass break ups...dejuane is one of three current defenders to garner over 200 tackles in his career (208). Boone also has eight career interceptions and 15 pass deflections.

4 GVSU has 134 TFL (-396) and 30 QB sacks (-187) on the year...grand Va l l e y State tallied a season-best 18 tackles for loss (-49) vs. Saginaw Va l l e y State...Nine different defenders have seven TFL s or more and a total of 16 total defensive players have notched a TFL. P Matt Regnery Sophomore punter Matt Regnery is averaging 41.1 yards per punt with a long of 63 yards. Regnery dropped four punts inside the MTU 20 yard line. Regnery also tallied a 58 yard punt that the officials said was partially touched before he was roughed. Regnery has stopped 11 punts inside the opponent 20 yard line. PK Scott Greene Place kicker Scott Greene was a First- Team All-GLIAC honoree...greene has converted 18-of-21 field goals (85.5) with a long of 39 yards. Scott has converted 10 consecutive field goals. His last miss was a 32- yarder at Wayne State...In addition, Greene is perfect on PATs (43-43). Greene s 18 regular season field goals is a GVSU single-season record and his 97 points is the 10th hightest singleseason total overall and second among kickers. Greene was named the D2Football.com Special Teams Player of the Week following his three field goal game at Winona State...Greene has kicked three field goals in a game three times this season. DE Marcus Spencer 2004 HM All-GLIAC Defensive end Marcus Spencer, who was an Honorable Mention All-GLIAC choice, leads GVSU in QB sacks (8.0), while ranking second in TFL (21). DE Mike McFadden 2004 HM All-GLIAC Defensive end Mike McFadden was an Honorable Mention All-GLIAC selection...mcfadden has tallied 44 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and three QB sacks. GVSU held Wayne State to a GLIAC record three first downs. The previous record was four held by Ashland which accomplished the feat three times in Wayne State picked up its first first down with 13:41 remaining in the fourth quarter and was held to 69 yards of total offense, including 21 yards on 24 plays in the first half...gvsu also held a time of possession advantage of 39:33-20:27 versus Wa y n e State...GVSU set single-game defensive records for fewest first downs allowed (3), fewest yards of total off e n s e allowed (69), fewest yards of total offense allowed in first half (21), fewest yards of total offense allowed in second half (48), fewest rushing first downs allowed (2), fewest passing first downs allowed (1), fewest yards per play by an opponent (1.4), and fewest plays by an opponent (48). Grand Valley State averaged 10,618 fans on four home dates this season. Grand Valley State ranked fourth in NCAA DII attendance in 2003, averaging 10,446 fans per game. The Lakers were one of only four teams in the country to average over 10,000. Grand Valley State holds the all-time college football record for highest average gain per attempted pass (11. 5 ).
