The Lakers last regular season loss was 10/23/04 to Northwood (35-14). GVSU has the second best winning percentage of football playing schools in the State of Michigan, behind Michigan's (.742) mark. GVSU is (.710). The Lakers are 91-5 in their last 96 games with four National Championships (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006). LAKER FOOTBALL GAME NOTES Grand Valley State senior all-american cornerback Brandon Carr is now 10th on the NCAA DII all-time career passes defended list with 43. Carr has 33 pass deflections and 10 career interceptions in his career. Carr is one behind Grant Bennett of Miles (44) and two behind Deqwan Young of St. Joseph s (45). Senior running back Preston Garris has shown his versatility this season for the Lakers. Garris is second on the team in rushing with 270 yards on 52 carries, while hauling in 10 receptions for 165 yards. Garris is averaging 7.5 yards per touch this season. Grand Valley State senior wide receiver Brandon Horn is emerging into a key receiver in the Laker offense. Horn leads the squad in receptions (25) and yards (366), while ranking second in TD catches (3). Brandon caught seven passes for 117 yards vs. Wayne State (9/29) and seven for 91 yards vs. Indianapolis. Junior tight end Jonn Mathews has 10 catches for 201 yards (20.1 ypc) and two TDs. Mathews has 17 catches for 366 yards (22.1 ypc) in his career. Mathews caught five passes for 108 yards vs. Wayne State (9/29). Senior WR Antione Trent leads the team in TD receptions this season with six. Trent has caught a TD pass in five of six games played this season and is catching a TD pass every two receptions. Trent has 12 catches for 192 yards in Grand Valley State sophomore QB Brad Iciek notched the third-best, single-game passing total in GVSU football history in just the fourth start of his career versus Wa y n e State. Iciek completed 25-of-45 passes for 403 yards and four TDs in just over three quarters of action. Iciek s total stands behind Curt Anes 434 and 419-yard passing totals. QB Brad Iciek ranks second in the country in pass e fficiency rating (184.34). Iciek has completed 82-of-126 passes for 1,271 yards and15 TDs. Iciek has played just one series in the fourth quarter this season. True freshman running back Jimmy Berezik leads the Laker rushing attack with 539 yards and six TDs on 54 carries. Berezik is averaging 10.0 yards per carry. Berezik rushed for 135 yards on 10 carries with two TDs vs. Findlay and tallied 125 yards and two TDs on just seven carries at Mercyhurst. Berezik is the first true freshman to break the 100-yard rushing mark in a game since Will Roach accomplished the feat versus Northwood (10/29/77) with 128 yards on 30 carries. Smolen has 31 carries for 214 yards (6.9 ypc) and three TDs, along with 15 catches for 197 yards and a TD. Smolen is averaging 9.2 yards per touch on the year. Grand Valley State picked off five passes versus Michigan Tech (Sept. 22), the Lakers' highest single-game total since picking off six passes versus Northeastern Illinois in GVSU returned two interceptions for touchdowns for the first time in school history. Bill Brechin recorded the fourth longest return for a touchdown (99 yards) in Laker football history in the third quarter versus MTU, while Corey Edwards returned his interception 61 yards for a score. The Lakers have 10 interceptions on the year, including four that have been return for TDs. The Grand Valley State defense has scored in 4-of-6 games this season (26 points) St. Joseph s - Brandon Carr 11 yard interception return for a TD. 4 Three receivers went over the 100-yard receiving mark for the first time in school history versus Wayne State. Blake Smolen hauled in 8 catches for 119 yards, Brandon Horn 7 for 117 and John Mathews five for 108. Defensive tackle Dan Skuta tallied 17 total tackles vs. Wayne State last Saturday. The 17 tackles is the sixth-best, single-game total in GVSU history and the top single-game total among defensive linemen. Skuta is second on the squad in total tackles with 33 Senior LB Anthony Adams leads the way in total tackles (43) and tackles for loss (6.5/-22) for the Lakers this season. Adams is seventh on the GVSU all-time tackles chart with 206 in his career. In addition, Adams has 44.5 tackles for loss in his career (-170) and has returned two fumbles for TDs.
