Junior ROV Ron Evans (6-0, 195/Olive Branch, Miss.) is third on the team and is 26th in the league with 47 tackles (32 solo, 15 assists), including 9.0 TFLs. He ranks third in the conference in TFLs. Evans was named the LSC South Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the win over TAMUK after snagging two interceptions on consecutive TAMUK possessions, which were the only two passes caught from Javelina starting quarterback Cory Miles. Evans also had seven solo tackles, including three tackles for loss and a quarterback sack which jarred the ball loose from TAMUK backup Joey Pena, who came on in relief of Miles. It was the first time a WTAMU player has received the Award since at least Senior LB Chad Webster (6-1, 220/Odessa, Texas) posted a career-high 20 tackles Saturday, and now ranks second on the team and tied for 22nd in the league in tackles with 48 (14 solo, 34 assists). Webster also has 2.0 TLSs, one sack and two QB hurries. Senior DE Darrell Lewis (6-0, 225/Muleshoe, Texas) has been a terror to the opposition s backfield, as he has 33 tackles (14 solo, 19 assists), including 7.0 TFLs and two sacks, as well as seven QB hurries, two forced fumbles and one recovered fumble. Lewis is tied for. Harlon Hill candidate junior QB Dalton Bell (6-3, 205/Canyon, Texas) directs the No. 1 passing offense in NCAA-II, as he is 187-of-286 (.654) for 2,449 yards (349.9 ypg) with 22 TDs and eight INTs. In Saturday s win, Bell was 27-of-38 (.711) for 405 yards and five TDs with one INT. He leads the conference in passing average/game, pass efficiency (157.1) and total offense (355.9 ypg), ranking 14th in the nation in pass efficiency and second in the country in total offense. Bell was 40-of-52 (.769) for 452 yards, with three TDs in the MSU game. The 40 completions is a personal career high, and three off of Derek Maupin s school and LSC record 43, while the 52 attempts is a career high. Bell s 452 yards was 11 shy of his career high, set at UCO on Sept. 10. Bell now has five 300+ yard passing outings. Bell has been recognized by the LSC office three times this season with the LSC South Offensive Player of the Week Award, and Bell was also honored by Don Hansen Football Gazette with National Player of the Week honors for his performance against MSU. Junior WR Ramon Perry (5-9, 175/Pacoima, Calif.) had three catches for 88 yards (29.3 ypc) and one TD, an off week by his standards, as it ended his streak of five-straight 100-yard receiving outings. Perry s TD came on a season-long 50-yard catch-and-run on WTAMU s first drive of the second half, that gave the Buffaloes a shortlived lead. Perry had a team-high 47 receptions on the season for 677 yards (14.4 ypc) with five TDs. Perry leads the LSC and is 14th in the NCAA-II in receptions/game (6.7) and is third in the conference and 20th in the country in yards/game (96.7 ypg). Perry also is third in the league and 31st in the nation in all purpose yards on ypg, as he has 111 yards on 13 punt returns (8.5 ypr) and eight kick returns for 157 yards (19.6 ypr). 7 Senior WR Tonae Martin (6-4, 210/Aledo, Texas) snagged six catches for 115 yards (19.2 ypc) and had two TDs, a 36-yard strike from Bell and a nine-yard slant pass that tied the score at 45-all. Martin has 37 receptions for 707 yards with eight TDs on the season, ranking second in the league and 13th in the nation in yards/game with ypg, and sixth in the conference and 45th in the country in receptions/game (5.3). Fellow senior WRs Jon Lockett (6-3, 215/Haywood, Calif.) and Johnathan Walker (6-0, 185/Mendenhall, Miss.) give the Buffaloes a plethora of options at wideout, as Lockett has 32 catches for 348 yards (10.9 ypc) with three TDs on the year, while Walker has 10 catches for 278 yards (27.8 ypc) with four TDs. In Saturday s game, Lockett had six catches for 81 yards, highlighted by a 60-yard scoring play, and also had a 37-yard kick return, that set up the Bell-to-Martin TD pass from 36-yards out on the very next play. The already large wideout corps increased prior to the MSU game, as junior Shaun Scott-Jones (6-2, 185/Lubbock, Texas) returned to the lineup after suffering a hand injury during preseason camp. Scott-Jones was one of five returning receivers with 30 or more receptions, as he had 30 catches for 387 yards and one TD last year. In Saturday s game, Scott-Jones had just one catch, but he is a definite threat. On the ground, junior TB Joe Harris (5-9, 185/Long Beach, Calif.) had five carries for 73 yards, including a 56-yard scamper for a TD, as well as a game-high nine receptions for 107 yards and a TD, a 22-yard score at the end of the first half that tied the score at 17 s at halftime. For the year, Harris has 73 carries for 526 yards (7.2 ypc/75.1 ypg) with seven TDs, ranking tied for eighth in the league in scoring. Harris also is a lethal receiving weapon out of the backfield, as he is third in the league and 33rd in the nation with 5.9 receptions/game, ranking second on the team with 41 catches for 321 yards, a 7.8 ypc average. Harris is sixth in the LSC in all purpose yards with ypg. Another potent option both on the ground and through the air is Harris backfield mate, junior TB Mo White (5-8, 180/Windsor, Calif.), who on the year has 52 carries for 279 yards (5.4 ypc) with one TD. White is also a receiving threat out of the backfield, as he is fifth on the team with 22 catches for 168 yards (7.6 ypc) with two TDs. White had eight carries for 45 yards and one catch for nine yards in the win over ENMU. Additionally, White has 13 kick returns for 244 yards (18.8 ypr), including two for 52 yards on Saturday, highlighted by a 35-yard return that set up WTAMU s first TD of the game, and ENMU only kicked to him one other time. Senior K/P Jacob Felton (6-0, 195/Amarillo, Texas) became the WTAMU single-season field goal record holder, as he drilled his 12th of the year on Saturday, as he is now 12-of-13 (.923), and is on pace to break single-season LSC record of 18. He also extends WTAMU career record holder mark, as he now has 30 career FGs. Felton was good on all seven of his PAT attempts, extending his school career record to 108 PATs. Felton also had five punts for a 28.8 average, with one inside the 20. Felton was honored as the LSC South Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the MSU game, and was also recognized by Don Hansen s Football Gazette National Player of the Week. 8 Buffalo Bits Lighting Up The Scoreboard: It took WTAMU five games last year to score 90 points and they did it in a single-game in the season-opener... the Buffaloes have now scored 339 points on the year through seven games (48.4 ppg), surpassing last year s point total of 225 points (22.5 ppg) through 10 games... At their current 48.4 ppg output, the Buffaloes are on pace to break both the school record (506 in 1994) and conference record (510, Texas A&I - now TAMU-Kingsville in 1976) for points and are on track to have the highest scoring average in both school history (46.0 ppg in 1994) and LSC history (46.4 ppg, Texas A&I - now TAMU-Kingsville in 1976). A Lot In A Little: The Buffaloes don t need a lot of time to score all their points, as they are third-to-last at 11th in the LSC in time of possession (28:16), as ENMU had a 34:26-25:34 advantage, including 11:25 of the fourth quarter... WTAMU has run exactly 500 plays, compiling 3,669 yards and are averaging 7.3 yards per play... defensively, the Buffaloes are yielding just 5.2 yards per play {See Page 6 for play breakdown}. Red Zone Rising: The Buffaloes lost their perfect-ness in the red zone against SWOSU, but were a perfect 2-of-2 Saturday against ENMU, scoring two TDs... WTAMU is now 32-of-35 (.915) in the red zone on the year, tied for second the LSC, as Northeastern State is 13-of-14 (.929) - WTAMU has 22 TDs (12 pass, 10 rush) and 10 FGs... That s a significant improvement from last year, when WTAMU was 22-of-35 (.629), ranking next to last in the LSC... Defensively, WTAMU s opponents are scoring on.714 (20-of-28) of their trips, as the Buffalo defense has snagged three INTs and held on downs twice. Passing the Buck and the Ball: Only seven receivers caught a pass Saturday... three Buffaloes had four or more catches... on the year, 13 different receivers have caught passes, including six with 10 or more. Triple D: Dynamic Dale Davis: Sophomore utilityman Dale Davis (6-0, 185/Amarillo, Texas) did a little of this and a little of that in the MSU game, as he had a fumble recovery on a punt return, protected a onside kick attempt, and perhaps most importantly, had a seven-yard pass to freshman DB Michael Brisco (6-2, 185/Childress, Texas) on a 4th-and-1 at the WTAMU 44 on the Buffaloes opening drive of the second half, allowing the drive to continue and resulting with a TD to pull WTAMU within, on the season, Davis has also scored on a fake field goal, and has a 38-yard pass play, both against ECU on Sept. 3. Sack Lack Pack: The Buffaloes offensive line lead the LSC in sacks against, as they have only yielded five sacks this season, including one against ENMU... Bell was sacked twice in the TAMUK game, marking the first time this season and the first time in seven games dating back to last season that a Buffalo QB was sacked multiple times in a game... the five sacks has occurred on 313 attempts (a whopping 62.6 attempts per sack)... over the last two seasons, the WTAMU O-Line has yielded only 13 sacks on 844 pass attempts (one sack every 64.9 attempts), as last season the O-Line gave up only eight sacks in 531 attempts (one sack every 66.4 attempts). Sack Pack Rackin Em Up: WTAMU s defense is tied for fourth in the LSC with 15 sacks, which equals the Buffaloes LSC-worst 15 sacks last season. First In Firsts: The Buffaloes have piled up 161 first downs, ranking first in the conference. Hanky Panky: For the sixth time in seven games this season, WTAMU was the most penalized team on the field, as the Buffaloes were flagged 10 times for 91 yards, but both are season-lows... The Buffaloes have been penalized 92 times for 875 yards (an average of 13.1 penalties per game for an average of 125 ypg)... WTAMU is the most-penalized team in the LSC, holding a 28-penalty and 299 yard advantage over MSU, who is the second-most penalized team in the league. Local Yocals: The place-kicking combo of Felton, Dale Davis and freshman long snapper T.A. Quinonez are all local standouts, as Felton and Quinonez are former Randall HS Raiders and Davis is a former Amarillo HS Sandie. Third in Five: The fifth-year senior trio of DL Darrell Lewis, RB/DB Dominique Bibben and TE/DE Pat Lindsey, along with senior LB Chad Webster, as well as linebackers coach Rich Renner have been under three head coaches, Stan McGarvey, Ronnie Jones ( ) and now Carthel. Oh Captain, My Captain: Lewis, Bibben, Lindsey are joined by senior OL Pat McCoy and junior QB Dalton Bell as the 2005 Buffalo Football Captains. About the ACU Wildcats ACU is 2-4 on the year, 2-3 in LSC overall and 0-2 in LSC South play. The Wildcats have lost three straight but two of those losses were only be a field goal, including last Saturday s loss at Angelo State, as ASU kicked a 28-yard field goal with one second left. ACU led 10-3 at halftime and nearly doubled ASU in total offense, but the Wildcats had five turnovers and missed two field goals. ACU has a quality win so far this year over LSC North-leading Texas A&M- Commerce, 27-18, back on Sept. 17, for the Wildcats last win. ACU jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and was able to hold off a good Commerce team. ACU has played well in the first quarter, outscoring their opponents ACU is second in the league and 19th in the nation in passing offense (267.0 ypg). The contest also matches the leagues best passing offense, the Buffaloes, which leads the conference and is first in the country in passing offense (382.7 ypg). ACU will try to counter the Buffs passing game with the fifth best pass defense in the conference (191.0 ypg) and the fifth overall ranked defense in the conference (370.5 ypg). ACU is very similar to WTAMU in that both teams rely heavily on their passing game to help them score points. ACU ranks seventh in the conference in scoring offense (27.0 ppg) and their passing game has accounting for 12 of their 21 TDs on the season. Leading the passing game is freshmen QB Billy Malone (6-3, 215/Paris, Texas), who is second in the LSC and 29th in NCAA-II in total offense with ypg. Malone also ranks second in the conference in passing yards per game with ypg and 11 TD passes so far this season. In Saturday s loss to ASU, Malone was 23-of-38 for 354 yards passing and two TD passes to go with two INTs. The one catching all of Malone s passes this season has been sophomore receiver Jerale Badon (5-7, 170/Abilene, Texas). Against ASU, Badon caught eight balls for a total of 119 yards. On the season Badon has caught 40 passes which ranks him second in the conference with 6.67 catches a game. Badon also ranks fifth in the conference with 546 yards receiving on the season for an average of 91.0 receiving yards per game. Leading ACU on the special teams has been junior defensive back/little bit of everywhere else Danieal Manning (6-0, 205/ Corsicana, Texas). Manning is currently ranked 16th in the country in punt return average (15.2 ypr) and ranks 18th in the country in #10 Buffaloes Going For First-Ever 8-0 Start When Facing ACU In LSC South Game With Family Ties - Page 8

9 kickoff return yardage with 27.6 ypr. On the season Manning has returned 11 punts for a total of 167 return yards and one touchdown. Manning has also returned 8 kickoffs for 221 yards and one touchdown. On the defensive side Manning has recorded 24 tackles so far this season and has two interceptions and has returned one of those for a touchdown as well. Defensively, senior defensive lineman Clayton Farrell (6-4, 275/Hallsville, Texas) leads ACU and ranks 12th in the LSC with 49 tackles (22 solo, 27 assists). Farrell also leads the conference in two different categories, with 5.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss, ranking sixth in the nation in TFLs and 21st for sacks, Cat Nips A Pair of 100 s-the Best Poker Hand: Jerale Badon and Robb Spells both had over 100 yards receiving in last week s loss to ASU, marking the first time since 1998 that the Wildcats have had a pair of 100-yard receivers in the same game. Early Risers: ACU has outscored its opposition, 61-35, in the first quarter, an average of almost 10-6 in the first stanza, but have been outscored, 46-12, in the second quarter, and average of nearly 8-2. First In 3rd s: The Wildcats lead the LSC in 3rd-down conversions, making 40-of-90 (.444)... However, ACU is second-to-last (12th) in 4th-down conversions (3-of-13,.231). Home Sweet Homecoming: ACU is all-time in Homecoming games, but have lost five of the last seven. Last Game-Oct. 8: #16 WTAMU Claims Wagon Wheel With Wild And Wooly OT Thriller Over ENMU Buffaloes Pick Off Two-Point Conversion To Preserve Win In Homecoming Game In Front Of LSC and Stadium Record Crowd of 22,993 The 16th-ranked West Texas A&M University Buffaloes pulled out a wild and wooly, overtime victory over border-rival Eastern New Mexico University, Saturday night at an overflowing Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. A Lone Star Conference and stadium record crowd of 22,993 watched WTAMU claim the Wagon Wheel in its Homecoming Game. The Buffaloes needed an interception by sophomore free safety Darnell Johnson on ENMU s two-point conversion attempt, sparking the celebration, as the Buffaloes sprinted for the Wagon Wheel and the crowd attacked the goalposts, ripping one set down. WTAMU improves to 7-0 for the first time since 1994, while ENMU had its four game win streak snapped and are now 4-3 overall. The Buffaloes take over sole possession of first-place in both the LSC and the LSC South, with 5-0 and 3-0 marks, respectively. The Greyhounds are now 4-2 in LSC and 2-1 in the division. The Buffaloes won the Wagon Wheel for the second time in the last three years, but ENMU still has an 11-7 advantage in Wagon Wheel games, as well as an all-time 11-9 series history advantage. It was also WTAMU s first Homecoming win in five tries, as the Buffaloes haven t won on Homecoming since There was nearly 1,200 yards of total offense amassed by the two teams, as ENMU had 632 yards and WTAMU tallied 551 yards. The Greyhounds established a new school rushing record with 475 yards, and had 157 yards passing, as ENMU QB Michael Benton had just three completions on seven attempts, including two by Derrick Hunter for 118 yards, including a 62-yard scoring pass. The Buffaloes were led by junior QB Dalton Bell was 27-of-38 for 405 yards and five TDs, and junior TB Joe Harris had a combined 180 yards of offense. He had 73 yards rushing yards on just five carries (14.6 ypc), including a 56-yard TD run, part of 146 total rushing yards for WTAMU, and Harris had nine catches for 107 yards and a 22-yard TD reception. Senior WR Tonae Martin had six receptions for 115 yards a two TDs, a 36-yard scoring play in the third quarter, part of the combined 42 points hung on the board by the two teams, and had a nine-yard catch from Bell that tied the score at 45-all. Junior WR Ramon Perry had three catches for 88 yards, ending his 100-yard game streak at five, but did have a TD, a 50-yard catch and run on the Buffaloes first possession of the second half to put them ahead, Senior WR Jon Lockett had six catches for 81 yards, highlighted by a 60-yard TD catch which drew WTAMU within just 11 seconds into the fourth quarter, after ENMU had taken a lead late in the third quarter. The Buffalo defense was led by senior LB Chad Webster with a career-high 20 tackles, while the Greyhounds were led by Jeremy Mullins 10 tackles. Senior K/P Jacob Felton was 7-of-7 on PATs, and hit a 49 (and a half) yard field goal to open the scoring for the Buffaloes. Felton now has 12 field goals on the season, establishing a new WTAMU school record and closing in on the LSC record of 18. The WTAMU defense held on to dear life, surviving 11:25 of ENMU possession in the fourth quarter. The Greyhounds had a time of possession of 34:26, while the Buffaloes held the ball for 25:34, but only 3:35 of the fourth quarter, making efficient use of their time. WTAMU s first play of the fourth quarter was the 60-yard scoring strike from Bell to Lockett. On ENMU s next possession, Hunter fumbled on a reverse end around, and WTAMU freshman rover Michael Brisco recovered, setting up the Buffaloes at the Greyhounds 31. Four plays later, Bell hit Martin on a quick slant for the TD and Felton s upright split knotted the score at 45 s with 10:02 to play. The WTAMU defense snared its only interception of the game on the next ENMU possession, as junior DB Don Hooks snagged a pass that deflected off the Greyhound intended receiver. However, the Buffaloes returned the favor, as Bell was later intercepted by Michael Fields at the WTAMU 46 with 4:41 left in the game. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the play gave the Greyhounds 1stand-10 on their own 39. With all three timeouts in hand, ENMU drove down to the WTAMU 18, but with 12 seconds left, ran an option play to the right, and Tezano was kept in-bounds and the Greyhounds couldn t get a timeout called before regulation expired. ENMU coaches and players argued, but after a huddle of the officials, they ruled that the Greyhounds did not get the timeout called in time, setting up overtime. The Buffaloes got the ball on offense first, and on the first play of scrimmage, Bell hit Harris on a shovel pass for a 24-yard pickup to get down to the 1. Two plays later Bell crossed the goal line on a QB sneak and Felton s PAT put WTAMU ahead by 7. ENMU took its turn on offense from the 25, and Benton carried the ball three plays in a row, getting down to the 7, then Patrick Hemphill had a six-yard burst to get to the 1. Benton then called his own number and scored on a 1-yard plunge. On the PAT, the Greyhounds lined up in a Swinging Gate formation to line up to kick the extra point, but tried a fake, with holder Corey White rolling right, attempting to pass, but it was picked off by Johnson. The back-up defensive back sprinted the length of the field with pigskin raised in celebration toward the Wagon Wheel, where he was joined by the rest of the Buffaloes, while the crowd raced for the goalposts, which stood little chance and collapsed in no time. The uprights were paraded around the field for the whole crowd to witness, while the Buffalo marching band blared the fight song and the crowd roared in jubilation. #10 Buffaloes Going For First-Ever 8-0 Start When Facing ACU In LSC South Game With Family Ties - Page 9

It was Bell s third LSC South Player of the Week Award this season, and Felton s second, as the duo were acknowledged together on Sept. 11 after WTAMU s upset win over then-#24 Central Oklahoma. Felton, a 6-0, 200, senior, is a local talent, as the Amarillo, Texas native kicked the game-winning 27-yard field goal as time expired, one of his four FGs in the final 17:01 of the game (a 24-yarder at 2:01-3Q, 22-yarder at 14:00-4Q, 30-yarder at 12:39-4Q, 27-yarder at 0:00-4Q). Felton now has 11 FGs on the season, tying WTAMU single-season FG record, held by four people, and is on pace to break singleseason LSC record of 18. He also extends WTAMU career record holder mark, as he now has 29 career FGs. In Saturday s win, Felton accounted for 15 points, as he also was 3-of-4 on PATs, extending his school career record to 101 PATs. Felton also had four punts for a 42.2 average with a long of 52 yards and one inside the 20, with a net punt average of 45.0 yards, as the one return attempt by MSU bounced of returner Gary Elliott for a 10 yard loss and WTAMU recovered, setting up the Buffaloes first score of the game. Bell, a 6-3, 195, junior homegrown talent from Canyon, Texas, was 40-of-52 (.769) for 452 yards, with three TDs in WTAMU s win - including going 5-of-5 in the final drive. He also had six rushes for 21 yards, with the most important yard coming on a scamper to get the ball in middle of field for lining up Felton s game-winning kick. The 40 completions is a personal career high, and three off of Derek Maupin s school and LSC record 43, while the 52 attempts is a career high. Bell s 452 yards is 11 shy of his career high, set at UCO on Sept. 10, and is Bell s fourth 300+ yard passing outing.
