3 About The WTAMU Buffaloes WTAMU is 2-6 overall,1-4 in LSC South standings, after snapping a four-game losing skid with a thrilling victory over Angelo State University on Saturday. Maupin appears to be making a case for former New York Yankee Reggie Jackson s moniker as Mr. October. Maupin has completed 156 of 233 passes (.670) for 1,690 yards (422.5 per game) and 10 touchdowns in four games this month. {LSC Release} On the season, Maupin is (.639) for 2,841 yards with 16 TDs and 10 INT. Maupin also is the school and conference record holder for completions and attempts, passing Mayfield for the school record and Rex Lamberti from Abilene Christian ( , 1993) for the conference mark. Maupin is 696-1,197 for his career. Several other school and conference records are in jeopardy, as Maupin is also closing in on Grady Benton s single-season passing yardage total of 3,541 yards in 1994, and the single-season completions and attempts record held by Mayfield in 1986 ( ). In the LSC record book, Maupin is closing in on Lamberti s career passing yards (7,934) and career passing yard average (233.4). Maupin has 7,310 yards passing and currently has a career average. On Oct. 2 against MSU, Maupin threw for a career-high and season LSC-best 495 yards on passing. Senior wideout Anthony Armstrong (6-0, 180, Carrollton, Texas/ Newman Smith HS) has been one of Maupin s go-to targets this season. Armstrong was the most highly decorated Buffalo last year, as the wideout collected LSC South Receiver of the Year honors as well as first-team All-LSC South accolades, to go with second-team Daktronics All-West Region and second-team d2football.com All-West Region kudos. WTAMU s Last Game: WTAMU 36, ASU 33 - Oct. 23, 2004 at San Angelo, Texas Buffaloes Bounce Back To Defeat Rams In Thriller Saturday WTAMU Claims First-Ever Win At San Angelo; Maupin Becomes School Career Total Offense Leader Derek Maupin s 4-yard pass to Anthony Armstrong with 32 seconds remaining, followed by a two-point conversion from Maupin to sophomore tight end Chris Snapp gave the West Texas A&M University Buffaloes a victory over the Angelo State University Rams Saturday night at San Angelo, Texas. It was WTAMU s first win at San Angelo, as well as snapping a five-game losing skid to the Rams, as ASU still holds a commanding 13-4 all-time series advantage. The Buffaloes also snapped a four-game overall losing skein, and are now 2-6 overall and got their first Lone Star Conference South Division win, moving to 1-4 in the division standings. WTAMU had lost its previous three games all by four points or less, and were able to break through with a win in a close game. ASU dropped its fourth game this season with a fourth-quarter lead, and are now 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the LSC South. Buffaloes Host Texans In LSC Crossover Clash Saturday - Page 6

7 Maupin set a new WTAMU total offense career record in the first quarter, passing Tod Mayfield s 7,342 yards from Maupin finished the game with 425 yards, including 413 yards passing, giving him 7,743 in his career. He needs just 115 yards to pass Mayfield s school passing record of 7,424. Maupin finished the game for 413 yards and 5 TDs and 3 INTs, completing passes to 10 different receivers. He also tied his own LSC record for completions he set last year, and also set a San Angelo Stadium record for completions and tied the attempts record. Maupin was for 245 yards and three TDs in the first half, opening the game The Buffaloes had 287 yards of offense in the first half while limiting the Rams to 111 yards, including just 28 yards rushing. Armstrong finished the game with 10 receptions for 144 with 3 TDs. Junior running back Dominique Bibben had 14 carries for 89 yards, as the Buffaloes amassed 110 yards on the ground. The WTAMU defense was led by freshman defensive back Jeremy Hibbler s 11 tackles, while senior linebacker Adam Shaw added eight tackles, surpassing the 300-tackle plateau for his career. Junior defensive lineman Darrell Lewis tallied seven tackles, including two and a half tackles and had a pivotal fumble recovery at the WTAMU 45 with 2:11 left in the game to set up the Buffaloes game-winning drive. WTAMU got on the board first, as the Buffaloes took the opening kickoff and marched down the field in nine plays, covering 72 yards. Maupin was 6-6 on the opening drive, the last a 14-yard strike to senior wideout Anthony Armstrong. Junior placekicker Jacob Felton tacked on the PAT to give WTAMU a 7-0 lead with 9:27 left in the opening quarter. After the WTAMU defense held ASU to three-and-out and a punt, the Buffaloes sophomore punt returner Jason Jones was hit hard by the Rams defense and fumbled at the ASU 21 and the Rams recovered. ASU took advantage of the very short field and Alexis Cooper went in from 2-yards out and Bryan Hepler s extra point tied the score at 7-7 with 5:39 on the first quarter clock. After the teams exchanged missed field goals wide left, WTAMU put together a 2-play, 41-yard drive, capped by a 32-yard pass from Maupin to junior wideout Tonae Martin. Felton s upright split gave the Buffaloes a 14-7 lead with 9:15 to go in the second quarter. ASU countered with a 24-yard pass from Trey Weishuhn to Travis House, and Hepler s extra-point knotted the score at 14-all with 5:54 left. On the Buffaloes ensuing possession, Maupin hit Armstrong for a 65-yard catch and run, including a double deke at the ASU 15 to get into the endzone. Felton s PAT put WTAMU ahead, 21-14, with 3:43 remaining in the half. After the Buffaloes final drive of the first half stalled with 1:04 on the clock, WTAMU ran the clock down, as ASU didn t stop it with a time out. Senior punter Chad Kennedy boomed a 57-yard punt that was downed at the ASU 21. The Rams took a knee to end the half at The Buffaloes took the second half kickoff and marched down the field, as Maupin completed 7-9 passes, leading WTAMU to the ASU 13 before a personal foul pushed the Buffaloes out to the ASU 28. Maupin s 10th pass of the drive was picked off by the Rams Dennis Lee, who pitched to Mike Walker returning it to the WTAMU 39, and another personal foul on the Buffaloes spotted the ball at the 24. ASU again punched it in from there, as Weishuhn scored on a 1-yard QB sneak and Hepler added the PAT to tie the score at 21 s at the 8:09 mark of the third stanza. After the teams traded punts, WTAMU capped a 6-play, 72-yard drive with a 5-yard pass from Maupin to junior wideout Jon Lockett. The drive was highlighted by a 34-yard run by Bibben, and Felton s PAT put WTAMU ahead, with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter. The Rams took the ensuing kick and put together a 6-play, 65-yard drive that overlapped the end of the third and the start of the fourth quarters, capped by Wieshuhn 14-yard scoring pass to Lamar Hickey. ASU went for the twopoint conversion and the lead, but the pass was incomplete, leaving the score at with 13:39 left in the game. On WTAMU s next possession, Maupin was intercepted by Teralle Bush at the WTAMU 31, again giving the Rams offense a short field. ASU got down to the WTAMU goalline, as Weishuhn was stopped on a QB sneak on first down, but managed to just get the ball across the plane on second down. The Rams again went for the two-point conversion, but Weishuhn was sacked, leaving ASU ahead, with 10:59 on the clock. The teams again traded punts, with WTAMU getting the ball back on its own 41 with 4:36 to play. On first down, Maupin found Armstrong deep across the middle, but ASU s Mike Walker arrived at Armstrong simultaneously with the ball, dislodging the pigskin from Armstrong s grasp. Maupin then ran twice, moving the ball to the ASU 43, before being sacked and fumbling, but the Buffaloes recovered at their own 47. A delay a game penalty made it 3rd-and-20, but Maupin s pass was intercepted by ASU s James Williams, who returned it to the WTAMU 41, giving the ball back to the Rams with 2:16 to play. On the Rams first ensuing play, Hibbler jarred the ball loose from Cooper and Lewis pounced it at the WTAMU 45. Maupin hit Armstrong for an 11-yard gain. After an incomplete pass, Bibben broke through the middle for a 5- yard gain, leaving the Buffaloes with a 3rd-and-5 from the ASU 39 and they called timeout. Maupin and Armstrong hooked up for an 8-yard chain-moving play, followed by an 8-yard pass from Maupin to junior wideout Jordan Grant to the ASU 23. Another 8-yard pass to Armstrong gave WTAMU a 1st-down at the ASU 15 and the Rams called timeout with 46 seconds left. Maupin hit Lockett across the middle for an 11-yard gain to the Rams 4 and the Buffaloes called timeout with 37 ticks on the clock. ASU didn t like the look WTAMU lined up in and called timeout. 8 Maupin then hit Armstrong with the game-winner in the back corner of the endzone with 32 seconds left and then hit Snapp in the opposite back corner with the two-point conversion. Felton drilled the kickoff into the endzone and ASU s drive started at the 20. After an incomplete pass, Weishuhn connected with Otis Daniels for 23 yard to the ASU 43 and then hit Cooper for 11 yards to the WTAMU 46, but had two incomplete passes to end the game. Weishuhn ended the game for 169 yards and 2 TD, being sacked twice by the Buffaloes. Cooper had 19 carries for 97 yards and 1 TD. WTAMU was 8-of-15 on 3rd-down conversions, while ASU was 2-of-9. The Buffaloes also had a 34:01-25:59 time of possession advantage. WTAMU amassed 28 first downs compared to 16 by ASU.
