User Manual Please read this manual before operating the press. If you have any questions regarding the installation and operation of the equipment, please contact Ray-Ran for assistance. Description Of The Machine The press has specifically been designed to cut relatively flexible materials, such as plastics, fabrics, boards and paper etc., when used with profile cutters to cut out shapes such as test samples. In most cases, the thickness of the material that can be cut will not just depend on the strength of the material, but also on the lateral flexibility of the material to allow the cutter to penetrate down into, and pass through the material. In other words, if the material is too rigid, the thickness of the material that can be cut will be reduced because the outside edges of the cutter blades will bind in the material, and therefore reduce the available cutting force. Cutting Force The graph shown below shows that the cutting force progressively increases as the cutter descends, reaching a maximum of 5,000 kg at full travel. To obtain the optimum cutting load, the cutter must be set up relative to the cutting board so that at full stroke, the cutter will just depress the surface of the cutting board. Adjusting the position of the cutter using the locking screw connecting the cutter to the ram. Initially, set the cutting tool so that when the press is operated, it is clear of the cutting board at maximum stroke. Repeat the procedure lowering the tool until it just touches the cutting board. Remember, if the cutter is re-sharpened, it may need to be reset. Air Pressure The air pressure feeding the pneumatic cylinder operating the ram can be controlled and adjusted by the regulator to which the main air supply is connected. The press has been designed to operate up to 150 psi, but generally it has been anticipated that most factory air lines will be set at about 100 psi, which will be adequate for cutting most materials. Maintenance The press has been designed as a maintenance free product. All the load points use special non-lubricated bearings. 3
Periodically, the air filter should be inspected and cleaned as required. Caution During Operation Of The Machine The press has been designed with safety being of paramount importance. Lowering the safety guard so that all moving parts are protected during the operation of the press. By lowering the guard, it also activates the pneumatic valve controlling the cutting action. The guard must never be removed whilst the air supply to the press is still connected. Most Important - the cutting tool must not be installed or adjusted unless the guard is fully retracted and the air supply turned off. Lifting & Installation An eyebolt is fitted to the top of the press to facilitate lifting to its desired location. Ensure that the press is placed on a robust bench or stand and is sited in a level position. It is recommended that an ON/OFF air supply valve is positioned at the interface of the main air supply and connection to the press so that it can be isolated during tool change/adjustment. Cutters Ray-Ran can supply a wide range of cutting tools especially designed for use with this press. The geometry of the cutting blades is selected to give the most efficient cutting action for the customer's materials. Sometimes trail tests are necessary to determine the best parameters, and Ray-Ran is able to undertake this evaluation, usually as a free of charge service to its customers.
