The three-day tournament will feature ninth-ranked Pepperdine, UC Irvine, Rhode Island, Temple and Texas-San Antonio. The tournament begins Wednesday (Sept. 6) when the Women of Troy face Rhode Island at 6:30 p.m. USC is coming off a two-win sweep last week at the Texas Invitational in Austin. The Trojans defeated Texas, 3-0, on Friday (Sept. 1) and Arkansas, 3-0, on Saturday (Sept. 2). Coming off a successful 1999 campaign in which the Women of Troy finished with a 21-9 overall record (13-5 Pac-10) and a No. 17 final ranking, USC returns five starters who each earned all-conference accolades last season. These players - Janae Henry (Sr., OH), Antoinette Polk (Sr., OH), Lauren Killian (So., OPP), Jennifer Pahl (Jr., MB) and Tracy Lindquist (So., S) - will welcome a six-member top-ranked recruiting class which includes 1999 Gatorade National Player of the Year April Ross and four-time All-American Katie Olsovsky. THE LAST OUTING vs. Texas -- The Women of Troy dealt 18th-ranked Texas its first season-opening loss since 1995 with a 3-0 victory (15-6, 17-5, 15-4) Friday in the Texas Invitational. USC held Texas to a.018 hitting percentage and held each player to no more than five kills in the match. As a team, USC hit.274 and received a match-high 10 kills (.400) and 14 digs from senior Janae Henry. vs. Arkansas -- The Trojans needed just over an hour to post a 3-0 triumph (15-8, 15-8, 15-7) over unranked Arkansas. For the second-straight night, USC was dominant on both sides of the net, hitting.358, posting 9.0 blocks and adding 45 digs. Freshman April Ross added a match-high 13 kills off of 24 attacks and four blocks, while Lauren Killian led with a.556 attack percentage. DID YOU KNOW? Two of the Trojans' opponents this week won a conference title in 1999 (UTSA - Southland, Temple - Atlantic-10). For the first time since 1997 USC begins the season with two victories. The Trojans swept their first ranked opponent of the season by earning a victory over 18thranked Texas on Friday. The Women of Troy started two freshmen (April Ross, Katie Olsovsky) against Texas and three (Toni Anderson, Olsovsky and Ross) against Arkansas. Three players hit above.350 against the Longhorns (Henry.400, Olsovsky.500, Lauren Killian.364) and three against the Razorbacks (Ross.417, Jennifer Pahl.400, Killian.556).
