Safety Tip On the air in the air by Gary Pelach Communicating on the radio is not a requirement at uncontrolled airports but practicing good communication procedures at uncontrolled airports is a good safety practice. It helps other traffic understand where you are and what you are planning to do. Don't hesitate to key the microphone and state your intentions to let others know your location and what you are planning. This practice will help developer confidence using the radio to communicate with ATC at controlled airports or with in-route flight following for traffic and weather information. So whether you are transmitting to other pilots on the common frequently or communicating with air traffic control, effective radio communication reduces workload, stress and increases safety while building your confidence as you gain experience in your ability to operate safely. Almost all communications have the same basic elements, who you are calling followed by who you are. Then where you are and what you want to do. If you aren't sure what to say or have a bit of "mic fright" practice talking about different situations and listen to other aircraft on ATC. You can rehearse what to say in different situations before you key the mike. It's really no different than using your telephone. Being proficient will come with practice and an error or two from time to time but you will increase your confidence and the safety of your flight. Greetings EAA! Caleb Swanson is Chapter 289 Air Academy attendee and Scholarship recipient Just a note to let you know CALEB SWANSON passed all his requirements and rec'd his A&P certification! He graduated Lake Area Technical Institute, Watertown, SD last week with this and an Associate s Degree in Applied Sciences. He has moved to Newton, IA to work for Kubal Ag Spraying - where he will service and load planes, continue working on his ratings and toward his commercial license. His goal is to work into the pilot's seat for crop dusting! (ok, I am not excited for that). He is excited about his new adventures and misses all of you good folks!
