1 CANDLER FIELD MUSEUM SEPTEMBER, 2013 NEWSLETTER 7th ANNUAL VETERAN'S DAY PROGRAM SATURDAY NOVEMBER 9th Please join us for our annual Veteran's Day Program on November 9th. We have great speakers lined up in addition to patriotic music, vendors, good food, and lots of military displays. We will have a drill team, honor guard, and a flag folding ceremony. We will also have flybys of antique military aircraft. This is going to be a great event - one of the best yet. In addition, we are raffling an AR-15 rifle that was donated by Bill Taylor and WKEU. Raffle tickets are $20 each for this once in a lifetime opportunity. This rifle has a $1,500 value including the magazine and scope. Tickets may be purchased at Barnstormer's Grill or by calling

BACKCOUNTRY OPERATIONS On August 10th, Candler Field Museum hosted the Recreational Aviation Foundation's representative Eric Davis who presented a morning seminar on flying in the backcountry. Eric, along with museum member Tobey Blanton, discussed flying in mountainous areas, aircraft performance in high density environments, use of charts, etc. Over 50 people attended the early morning session including a group from the Georgia Cub Flyers.

5 CIVIL AIR PATROL CHANGE OF COMMAND The Griffin Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol held a change of command ceremony at Candler Field Museum on August 17th. Outgoing commander Captain John Kimberly (pictured on the right) has led the group for the past 4 years. Captain Kimberly has been instrumental in growing the number of cadets to record levels. Captain Robert Burkett (standing behind the podium) is the new commander. We look forward to continuing our close relationship with this organization. 6 The Flying Rebels have been an active flying club in the state of Georgia for 50 plus years. I remember going to a couple of their functions over 30 years ago. One of the unique events The Rebels had was an efficiency air race to promote safety in General Aviation. The winner was presented a plaque from the Governor and their name was inscribed on a plaque in the lobby at PDK. The club has decided to present this plaque to Candler Museum to be prominently displayed so the hundreds of past members and families can come to Candler to enjoy and to forever be a reminder of safety conscience organizations in Georgia History. The pla ques are on display near the entrance to the Jack Barbery library. We are very appreciative of their confidence in the museum in sharing this piece of aviation history. The dedication ceremony took place in the museum on May 11th of this year. FLABOB NEWS (news from our sister airport located in Riverside, CA) Flabob is hosting it's annual Flying Circus this month on September Last year the circus drew over 100 airplanes from antiques to experimentals to modern aircraft. It is a great event and I highly recommend you attend if you are in the southern California area. Flabob is located near Riverside, CA in the eastern suburbs of Los Angeles. The person on the far left is Bob Schrader who is the current crew chief on the C-7 pictured. The interview took place during AirVenture's "Warbirds in Review" a program inaugurated by museum member Connie Bowlin. A military airplane is featured for the program along with people who flew it and their experiences. The airplane is the C-7 Caribou and both Ron and General Borling were sharing their Vietnam experiences. Sam Bass is the interviewer. Connie has 2 of these programs scheduled each day annually at AirVenture. General Borling was a POW in North Vietnam for several years and wrote a book about his experience called "Taps on the Walls". Ron flew the Caribou in Vietnam for the United States Air F orce during

11 WABE RADIO INTERVIEW Atlanta FM radio station WABE 90.1 FM conducted a radio interview with Ron Alexander regarding Candler Field Museum. WABE is Atlanta's NPR Station. MUSEUM YOUTH PROGRAM Candler Field Museum is in the process of developing a youth mentorship program. This program is designed to impart knowledge in aviation related subjects to young people who have an interest in aviation. Under experienced adult guidance students will be taught the skills of restoring and maintaining aircraft along with being provided the opportunity to actually do work on airplanes. In addition, those interested will have the opportunity to learn how to pilot an airplane through the Candler Field Flying Club. This program is very structured and the students must have a strong commitment to learn. Those interested in obtaining their aircraft mechanic license will be afforded the opportunity to log hours toward the time requirement for this license. Students who elect to learn to fly an airplane will be taught all of the skills needed for their p ilot's license. Students will actually earn their flying time by working in the museum or the flying club. This will afford the individual a method of learning to fly with minimal expense. 12 CANDLER FIELD FLYING CLUB Good news at the flying club. They will have a fully certified simulator up and running within a couple of weeks. The simulator is certified for pilots to maintain their instrument qualifications in addition to allowing new students to log time toward their instrument rating. This is going to be a great addition for the club. Also, Jason Brown, one of the flying club instructors is writing a newsletter for the club each month.
