1 The Jet Aircraft Museum (JAM) is a unique non-profit organization, formed in 2005 and is based at the London International Airport in London, Ontario. JAM News - May 2017 JAM is taking off in 2017 With the event season already started, JAM is stepping up to the plate in style. By taking stock of our resources, we want all JAM members to have the chance to get involved. We have focused attention on Jet Blasts by reducing the number of events to key moments in the aviation year. By reducing Home commitments, we have opened up the chance to attend more Away fixtures. Jet Blast events will include a Father s Day event on 18 th June and a Halloween themed event on 29 th October. We are already booked to attend aviation events in Windsor and Hanover and we have increased the number of certified ground crew for our CT-133 and the Jet Provost. Our involvement with our partners at London Airport and Airshow London is another step up from Watch out for exciting announcements as the year progresses. We continue to grow as a museum with a significant increase in traffic from our City partners at Tourism London. This means that opportunities to get involved in new and exciting projects will be growing. If you haven t visited for a while, come and see what we are doing. Membership is increasing, as more people see how we have changed and improved our presentation. There has never been a better time to come out and be a part of our success! 2 JAM celebrates Voodoo Last Flight in style. Sunday 9 th June not only marked the 100 th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, it also marked the 30th anniversary of the last flight of a CF-101 Voodoo, anywhere in the world. On April 9, 1987, Voodoo, serial number , made the world s last Voodoo flight from CFB Chatham to CFB Greenwood NS. Voodoo # is now on display at JAM. The JAM displays were supported by presentations from The Secrets of Radar Museum (London) and the Canadian Forces Museum of Aerospace Defence, from North Bay. The event opened with the singing of O Canada and was followed by opening addresses by: Peter Fragiskatos (MP), Teresa Armstrong (MPP) and Matt Brown (Mayor of the City of London). After short presentations on JAM and the Voodoo, the event moved on to the introduction of former Voodoo pilots: including Major Steve Wallace, Andy Kennedy, Peter Levedag, and Last Flight navigator, Mike Kyne. All were invited onto the centre stage and shared their personal tales of the One-0- Wonder. Visitors were captivated as our guests talked about flying through the sound barrier, weapons drills, intercepting Soviet aircraft and life in the Canadian Forces. After the audience with our honoured guests, Piper Garrett Rodgers escorted a specially commissioned Last Flight commemorative painting to the stage, where Last Flight navigator, Mike Kyne, unveiled it. The unveiling was followed by a live auction in support of the Voodoo Restoration fund. The auction items included: Limited edition prints 006/101 and 101/101 of our original Voodoo painting, A 4-person VIP package to Airshow London 2017, and A flight for one in a Boeing Stearman. The Voodoo event was attended by over 100 people, who also took time to tour the museum after formalities were concluded. As always, JAM extends its heartfelt thanks to all the current and new volunteers who helped make the day possible and a great success. THANK YOU, TEAM JAM 2
3 Make sure to visit the JAM store. The JAM store is a significant revenue generator for the museum, so make sure you check out new items as they arrive: Voodoo # T-Shirts. Voodoo patches. # T-Shirts. Hawker Hunter T7 T-Shirts. New range of JAMwear. We are always looking for volunteers and members to help keep the store staffed when the museum is open. JAM Education needs you. JAM ED has now been running for nearly two years. By the end of June 2017, JAM Ed. will have hosted 7 one-week classes and 17 one-day classes. Feedback from the teachers and students continues to be very positive: I loved it all! Don't change a thing! - Grade 6 Student The children really enjoyed the experience being here at the museum because of the setting and the program, they learned so much more than they would have in our classroom. - Grade 6/7 Teacher. Other comments indicate that the program exceeds participants expectations. Without doubt, it is the instructors who make JAM Ed. come alive for the students. Our thanks go out to the small but amazing team of JAM ED volunteers. We also need volunteers who are willing to travel with the store when JAM attends events in away locations. Remember that we also give Tax Receipts for donations of $30 or more. Forms are available in the store or at the front desk. A new initiative is in the works. We are in the initial stages of developing an evening/weekend program for Air Cadets. We see this as a manageable fit for the JAM volunteers and an excellent next step in community outreach. We ll keep you informed about this new program s development. Finally, we would like to invite new volunteers to join the JAM ED Team of dedicated instructors. There is an outline of the program on the Volunteer Bulletin Board that you can pick up. You can also reach us at education@jetaircraftmuseum.ca Did you know? 2017 is a very special year for JAM. Three unique anniversaries occur and we need your help in making it a year to remember: 30th Anniversary of the last operational flight of the CF-101 Voodoo anywhere in the world (and we have Voodoo #101006) 150th Anniversary of Canada. 65th Anniversary of the first flight of the Canadair CT
4 Flight Operations 2017 is gearing up to be a very busy year for Flight Ops with the possibility of having three operational aircraft flying by September. The aircraft will be our CT (soon to be the Red Knight), Hawker Hunter T7 and the BAC Jet Provost T4. This will be amazing to see and has been long awaited. We expect to complete engine runs on 573 during the month of May and flight test soon after. Maintenance The work on #573 has progressed so well that gear swings and electrical system checks have now been completed, under the supervision of AME Brian Rhodenizer. As always, the tireless assistance from many hardworking volunteers has been nothing short of amazing. Preparation is now under way for the long expected Red Knight paint scheme. We need your help to prepare 573 and the hangar for the painting phase. Remember to keep in touch: Members interested in maintenance and working on #573 should contact Rick Graham. restoration@jetaircraftmuseum.ca Airshow London has already confirmed that they would like the Red Knight and the Hawker Hunter T7 for the airshow, with flying displays from both aircraft. We have a lot of work ahead of us to be able to achieve this objective. This year has already seen the Jet Provost complete a fly-past for the Vimy Ridge opening ceremony and a flight for our first Jet Blast of the year! We had perfect flying conditions on the day and Jim Fisk took some wonderful photos during the flight. They can be viewed on JAM s Official Facebook page. We have more airshows and events booked for the rest of the year. We have a busy schedule for this coming flying season. In March and April we ran ground crew training programs; one for the CT133 and the other for the Jet Provost. Both were well attended. I would like to thank all those who came out for the first time, as well as those who were re-qualifying as ground crew for Without your support it would be very difficult to run a safe and effective flight operation. Canadian Aviation History: Memorable date - May 6 th 1919 The first commercial flight, from Canada to United States, occurred as a Canadian Curtiss aircraft flew 150 pounds of raw furs from Toronto to Elizabeth, New Jersey. It was not a non-stop flight. We now have a number of newly qualified members and this will help take some of the pressure of some of our existing ground crews. All of these events are extremely important to JAM to help promote our museum and raise crucial funds to get our aircraft back in the air! Thank you for your support! Graham Rawlinson. flightops@jetaircraftmuseum.ca 4
5 JAM unsung heroes Membership and Volunteer Drive 2017 JAM members contribute in a multitude of ways that are not always apparent. A great deal of work goes on behind the scenes to help move our museum forward and upward. Giving time and effort is always appreciated and we are always on the lookout for new helpers to drive JAM to new heights. If you haven t been able to help and would like to chat to one of us about how you may support us, call and we will call you back with details on how you can become more involved. In the coming months, you will see new displays of uniform tunics appear in the museum. The wallmounted display cases are being produced by Alan Gooding and will bring new life and permanence to valuable artefacts. Sometimes a couple of hours can make a huge difference. Thank you Alan. Remember to get visitors to see our Volunteer Opportunities board in the main foyer. Community Outreach JAM is working hard to build positive and lasting links within the City. As part of that initiative, JAM hosted a charity plane pull on 26th March. Alternatively, if you can give some time, energy and effort this year, please contact Carolyn at: membership@jetaircraftmuseum.ca and get involved today. The event was organized through the Commercial Aviation Management program at Western University and was well attended. Teams from WestJet, Fanshawe Aviation program and Western University participated. Western Fair District to celebrate military at 1st Veterans Classic Event Western Fair District looks forward to celebrating and honouring our military at the newly launched Veterans Classic. The first of what will become an annual event at The Raceway, will take place Friday October 20th, 2017 as part of the Friday night harness racing card. The challenge was to pull a 9000 lb. CT-133 over 100 metres. The winning time was just 47 seconds! To kick off the celebration, the 1st Hussars Cavalry Troop will perform. The Veterans Classic will also showcase military vehicles throughout the West Annex, Grandstand and The Raceway lobby for guests to see as well as veteran tributes between each race of the night. The evening will include named races as well as the Veterans Classic Pace. Well-done Western University. The event raised over $800 for the Make A Wish foundation and JAM was proud to help. The event will support the Poppy Fund, Parkwood Veterans and the Military Family Resource Centre through fundraising efforts. Membership Cards.
