Ranger Review Dufu r Elementary & Du fur Hig h School Volume 22; Issue 5 January 2016 2015 State 1A Football Champions Seniors Alec Smith, Jon Keyser, Zach Christiansen, Kurt Nuevo, and Steven Bailey with Championship trophy. The Ranger Football Team has once again won a 1A State Championship! This is the 7th time Ranger football has won the 1A State Championship under the leadership of Head Coach Jack Henderson. Past 1A Championships titles were with the 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2006 teams. There were a few injuries in key positions early in the season that left the Rangers in jeopardy of not even making it to the play-offs. So for a time, the second string stepped up and they persevered. In the following games the Rangers played with determination and heart; battling back to be a team to be reckoned with, and proving in the Quarterfinal and Semi-final games that it s not over until the last second is off the clock. In the first play-off game, the Rangers won 62-8 against Days Creek in a home game. The Rangers traveled the next three games. First to Cottage Grove High School to play Yoncalla in the quarter final, wining 74-72 the last minute plus on the clock was great football! Next, a 42-38 win over Perrydale in the Semi-final game where, in the end, Perrydale had the ball but went down and time ran out. In the Championship game, held in Hermiston, the Rangers battled and traded scores with the Crane Mustangs, but were victorious with a 36-32 win, becoming the 2015 1A State Champions. Named the Moda Health Player of the Game was Bailee Keever. The Rangers will graduate five seniors Jon Keyser, Zach Christiansen, Kurt Nuevo, Alec Smith, and Steven Bailey. Congratulations on your win! The Rangers had a lot of Community support this year. There was a sea of red in the play-offs and it meant a lot to these boys Thanks for being there and sharing in their wins! Inside this issue: OMSI Visit Ranger of the Month FFA & Canned Food Drive Thanks 2 JWD Spaghetti Dinner 3 Ranger Math & Literature Program 4 Calendar 5 OSAA Assistant Executive Director Mr. Brad Garrett was at Dufur School to speak to the team and officially award them the Championship trophy in an assembly attended by fans and families.

Page 2 Ranger Review OMSI Last month students and their families were treated to a traveling science exhibit from OMSI. They brought a portable planetarium, held an assembly and had an evening event for families. Due to time constraints, the 6th thru 9th grades were the classes chosen to participate in the planetarium. Students viewed images of the universe shown inside the planetarium s ceiling and walls. The assembly for Kindergarten thru 12th grade students was a scientific exploration of liquids, solids, and gases using dry ice, liquid nitrogen, and ordinary items like balloons and water bottles. A few students were chosen to participate in some of the experiments. Then, the evening session was devoted to families. They were able to ask questions and experience a variety of hands on scientific puzzles and experiments. Ranger of the Month The Ranger of the Month for the combined November/December is Emily Grande-DePriest. Emily is a junior who participated in Volleyball and Basketball while maintaining a 3.84 cumulative GPA. She also volunteers her time working in the nursery at her local church. Emily recently led a wonderful charity/fundraiser called Operation Christmas Child. They collected toys that were sent to 3rd world countries where they would be distributed to children for the holidays. Upon graduation Emily plans to attend Columbia Gorge Community College and later transfer to a University where she plans to attain degree in Elementary Education. Emily would like to thank her Parents, Grandparents and Coaches for their support and pushing her to be the best she can be. Congratulations Emily on a job well done! FFA Thanks You Thank You FFA Christmas Trees The Dufur Chapter of FFA would like to Thank everyone who purchased a tree from them this year. It is very much appreciated as proceeds from this fundraiser help the Chapter with fees and other expenses. Canned Food Drive Thank You to those of you who participated in the Canned Food Drive. It was a great success, and with your donations we were able to help supply food boxes for many local families.

Page 4 Ranger Review Ranger Math & Literature Program Happy New Year! I will be retesting students K-5 in math with the easy CBM assessment, and in reading with Dibles early in 2016. You will receive notification if your child will be in our Title 1 program for the Winter period. Here is an activity that your child may enjoy: Financial Literacy Use a blank page from your check registry and write $50.00 at the top. Then, have your child shop from a catalog, newspaper ads, or on the internet for things to buy. Encourage your child to make smart decisions in order to buy more. They might find sale items, skip name brands, or find the same items from another store. They can write each item and its price in the register and subtract the amount from the total. How many items will they buy?
