Please review for consideration the information below and contact us with any questions you may have and we look forward to hearing from you and for a hopeful partnership for years to come. The Mission of The Fort Griffin BBQ Cook-Off is to preserve Texas History, to promote tourism in the Big Country, and through community engagement, pass on the knowledge of Texas history to our younger generations. Our Vision is to add to the overall efforts of promoting the Big Country as a tourist destination. We strive to foster a healthy sense of community through a family-friendly weekend event. We invite local organizations to participate in the event, as a vendor, to raise money for their cause. We encourage family and friends to get outdoors and harvest dove together. We make every effort to share the grassroots history of what makes Texas what it is and Texans who we are today with our many visitors, while also deepening the appreciation of this area s past with younger generations to ensure that those roots forever remain alive and strong! Our Goal is to establish The Fort Griffin BBQ Cook-Off as one of the premiere cook-offs in Texas. Our 1 st Annual Cook-Off laid a solid foundation for growth and wide-spread interest. Our niche in the BBQ competition market is the first and only of its kind, as we have branded a special feature to our event, The World Championship Dove Cook-Off, which has been raising ears since last September. The success of our 1 st Annual event is spreading like wildfire, and we have already received team entries 6- months out from our 2 nd event, which is occurring on September 24, 2016 and we invite you to join. The Cook-Off boasts a Grand Champion prize like no other: The Blade of Fort Griffin. This is a 30-pound custom made longhorn brass bolstered knife made by a local blacksmith in Albany, Texas. It is truly one of a kind. Teams are pouring in for a chance to acquire this unique mantel piece. With your help we know The Fort Griffin BBQ Cook-Off can be put on the map as one of the top cookoff s in Texas while we will make every effort to preserve our beautiful Texas history as well as adding to the Big Country s reputation of being a top spot for tourist destination. We hope that you can assist us in that effort and we look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, The Fort Griffin BBQ Cook-Off Committee
Fort Griffin BBQ Battle for the Blade & World Championship Dove Cook-Off With our expected turn out for the cook-off this year and outgrowing our current location, we are making plans to have the event at a larger location where the town of Fort Griffin was actually located for our 3 rd annual in 2017. It is where tourists can have a first-hand taste at the history of the Big Country, a place where Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp First Met. This is now known as the Fort Griffin State Historical Site. Located just 15 miles north of Albany, the area will offer more than just good barbecue and live music but actually create an experience like no other. For one weekend we plan to bring Fort Griffin back to life with music, food, commerce, & reenactments! The plan would be to place cooks, vendors and entertainment along the roadsides in the Old Fort Area of the headquarters and the live music high on the hilltop over-looking the lush landscape of the Clear Fork of the Brazos River above the Mountain Trail. Spectators are always welcome to rent campsites for the weekend in the Camping Area where they can explore the nature trails, get a hook wet, take part in the recreational activities of the campgrounds, relax under the shade trees, or in this case enjoy all of the festivities the Fort Griffin BBQ will have to offer while strengthening their knowledge in the Big Country s well renowned and legendary history. 2016 Current Year (Projection) 65 Teams(max for current location), 750+ Spectators, Location Fandangle Grounds 2017 Next Year (Projection) 75-100 Teams, 1500-2000 Spectators, Location Fort Griffin State Historic Site
Fort Griffin History Lesson Shortly after the Civil War came to a close in 1867, a new US Army post, the legendary Fort Griffin, was established; following the prior fort at Camp Cooper commanded by Col. Robert E. Lee that was provided by the US Army to provide protection for settlers from local Indian tribes. With this new army post also sprang the town of Fort Griffin, a.k.a. Griffin Flat, or sometimes referred to as The Flat. It was considered to be one of the West s five wildest towns with streets thronging with soldiers, buffalo hunters, drovers, gamblers, saloon girls, surveyors, outlaws, clerks, merchants and ranchers. Questionable characters such as Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Lottie Deno, Big Nose Kate, John Wesley Hardin, Hurricane Minnie and Hurricane Bill all made their way into the booming West Texas town. In 1874, the military declared martial law and ran many lawbreakers out of the area. The county was organized with Fort Griffin as the county seat. Leaders soon decided that the new town of Albany, just 15 miles south of Fort Griffin, was a better choice and Albany was then established as the new county seat for Shackelford County. With the millions of buffalo gone and the Texas Central Railroad making its way into Albany in 1881, Fort Griffin became nothing more than a ghost town; leaving behind memories, as well as, old stone structures and buildings that are still there today.
