What we will cover: Introduction to Administrative Controls Safe Work Procedures Training Lockout Emergency Plans Questions?
Hierarchy of Controls Effectiveness decreases as you move lower
Low on the hierarchy but very important Procedures, training, etc. Best used to compliment other measures

Safe Work Procedure Task name partment: Written By: Approved By: Date Created: Date of last Revision: Hazards Present: Personal Protective Equipment or Devices Required: Training: gns and symptoms of a musculoskeletal injury (MSI) can include pain, burning, swelling, color changes, numbness/tingling, and loss of movement or strength in a body part. A worker should inform their upervisor if they experience these or other signs and symptoms so the work tasks can be re-assessed. Steps to complete the task safely: Guidance Documents/ Standards / Applicable Legislation / Other: Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Regulations M.R. 217/2006 parts 2.1, 8, 10, 11, 39.5, 39.10 Task Monitoring Process The employer will monitor the effectiveness of any control measures implemented to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury
Section 16.2(1) An Employer must a) develop and implement safe work procedures respecting all machines and tools in the workplace; b) train workers in the safe work procedures; and c) ensure that workers comply with the safe work procedures
Section 16.2(2) The safe work procedures must include practices and procedures dealing with the lockout of machines used in the workplace
Section 15 refers to Safe Work Practices
Indicate the hazards in the process HAZARDS: Crush in Point of Operation Struck by Bending Material Drop Material, Cut from Edge of Material Heat from Hydraulic Tank & Cylinders Pinch Points at Back of Machine Sprain/Strain from Lifting
List the PPE required. Indicate the hazard its protecting the worker from PPE REQUIRED: - Ear Plugs - Safety Glasses - Steel-Toed Boots - Tight-Fitting Kevlar Gloves
List the training provided. Indicate the training records referenced. TRAINING REQUIRED: -press brake operation -light curtain operation -crane operation
Indicate the safeguards in the process. SAFEGUARDS: -light curtain -rear barrier fence -side guarding
What should be noted with this process step? 5 5. Activate Press a) Ensure all persons are clear of point of operation. b) Always use press in hand/foot operating mode. c) If second operator is required, always ensure second foot pedal is activated. d) Be aware of material bending during cycle.

Plant Policy Machine Specific
Section 16.14 to 16.18 Outlines the requirements for lockout, the use of safe work procedures, removing locks and transfer locks.
This Standard specifies requirements for controlling hazardous energy associated with potentially harmful machines, equipment, and processes
Plant Policy Outlines the general rules for lockout Responsibilities for lockout Use of locks
What are the forms of energy on this piece of equipment?
Machine Specific More detailed when multiple forms of energy or multiple points of lockout
Indicate pictorially where the lockout points are for the different types of energy

EMERGENCY PLAN ACCURPRESS PRESS BRAKE Notes: 1. This plan is a specific emergency rescue plan for the Accupress press brake. It contains information relating to the press brake and not general emergency plan details. 2. Training should be provided on this plan, recorded on the training record and reviewed annually. 3. All safety components mentioned in this procedure should be tested daily to ensure proper working order. Types of Emergencies and Procedures: Trapped in Machine 1. Never inch the press to free a trapped person, use e-stop or ram up buttons. 2. If possible hit ram up button and lift ram electrically. Extract operator, perform first aid, and call for help. 3. If electrical controls are not responding, release hydraulic valve, use hydraulic jack to lift ram, perform first aid, and call for help. Electrical Fire 1. Locate Type C fire extinguisher, extinguish fire. 2. Call Fire Department. Crush or Amputation 1. Contact first responders. 2. Apply first aid, call for help. Hydraulic Fluid Spill 1. Wear chemical resistant gloves and safety glasses. 2. Block off spill area. 3. Clean up spill using rags or absorbent granules. Emergency Team Members: Function Name Title Contact Number First Aid Mechanical Electrical Supervisor
Outlines the need for general emergency plans (fire, flood, chemical spill, etc).
Section 17 outlines the need for an emergency plan for punch presses and press brakes.
The emergency plan shall include (a) the names of people to be contacted to assist in the rescue. These names shall be posted in a conspicuous place within the immediate work area; (b) a procedure to be followed for releasing an entrapped hand, finger, or other body part; (c) training of at least one person per working shift in rescue procedures; (d) appropriate tools and equipment to achieve rescue; (e) posting a summary of the rescue procedures on appropriate machines; and (f) a means of releasing an entrapped member or person from accessory or auxiliary equipment associated with the press danger zone.

To decrease risk even further
When the machine is installed, you want to complete your risk assessment and verify you have a safe piece of equipment. Ask your installer to participate. Have them signoff and provide written documentation that the safeguards are installed as required.
