Sherman Sports Complex Storrs, CT May 4-6 All Day The Pitt women s track and field team wants to keep their streak going. After two years of winning the league title, the Panthers are heading to Storrs, Conn., this weekend for the 2007 Big East Outdoor Championships. The team won back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006 and has several conference champions returning for another victory. This season the team returns champions in the 200 meters and 400-meter relay. Pitt s depth lies in its sprints and relays with several individual performers in field events who could contend for a title. Sprints (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) is the team s returning champion in the 200 meters. Her sister, (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) came in second in that event last season. also picked up all-conference honors with a second-place finish in the 100 meters last season. Pitt s other key sprinter is sophomore Raquel Bender (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) who will compete in the 100 and 200 meters as well. Middle Distance Pitt has several veterans in middle distance events. Senior Krystal Epps (Butler, Pa./Butler) is the team s primary runner in the 800 meters. Junior Selena Sappleton (Brooklyn, N.Y./A.P. Randolph) is also talented in these events. Also, Ali Briggs (Washington, Pa./Washington) has moved into a leadership role this season, primarily in the 1,500 meters. Long Distance The team s leading runner in long distance events is senior Nicki Angstadt (Kutztown, Pa./ Fleetwood) who runs the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000 meters. She holds the 12th fastest time in the league in the 5,000 meters at 17:06.49 and the fifth fastest time in the steeplechase at 10:42.11. Suzy Bossart (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) is a qualifier in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, having run a season-best 37:11.47 in the 10,000 meters at the Sea Ray Relays. Hurdles Pitt has a returning All-America selection in the hurdles as Julianna Reed (Gibsonia, Pa./ Hampton) was a top competitor at last year s NCAA Championships. She ll compete in the 400- meter hurdles this weekend. Reed placed second in this event at last year s meet. In the 100- meter hurdles, leading the team is transfer Mycaiah Clemons (New Kensington, Pa./Virginia Tech). She has the fifth fastest time in the league at 13.95 from the Morgan State Legacy meet. Also qualifying in the 110-meter hurdles is Reed and Brianna Broyles (Allentown, Pa./William Allen). In addition to Reed, other qualifiers in the 400-meter hurdles include Sappleton, Broyles, Patricia Anyanwu (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) and Martina Hallman (Miami, Fla./Miami Southridge). This is one of several different events Hallman will take on.

2 Relays The Panthers have all four members of their 400-meter relay team returning this season after winning the Big East title in 2006. The squad includes the Calhoun sisters, Bender and Janessa Murphy (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley). The team ran a time of 45.68 last year for the win. Pitt also took second in the 1,600-meter relay last year with a squad consisting of the Calhouns, Hallman and Reed. Pitt may also have a group run the 3,200-meter relay as well. Jumps In jumps, the team is extremely versatile and highly competitive. Pitt s leading high jumper is freshman Kendall Butch (Butler, Pa./Butler) who is 10th in the Big East standings with a height of 1.70 meters from the indoor season. Two Panthers are leading the Big East in the long jump. Hallman has the top mark in the conference, reaching a distance of 6.16 meters at the Morgan State meet. She is the reigning Big East champion in this event, having jumped a distance of 6.18 meters last season. Murphy is currently third in the Big East with a distance of 6.12 from the indoor season. Both Hallman and Murphy have also qualified in the triple jump. Murphy is seventh in the league at 12.09 meters, and Hallman is 12th at 11.85 meters. Throws Pitt has senior Kim Rorabaugh (Clymer, Pa./Purchase Line) representing the team in throws. She qualified in the shot put where she s ninth in the league, reaching a distance of 13.85 meters during the indoor season. Rorabaugh is fifth in the Big East in the hammer throw with a distance of 52.66 meters from the Asics Invitational. Pole Vault/Javelin In addition to the high jump, Butch will also appear in the pole vault. She is sixth in the league, having reached a height of 3.65 meters at the Morgan State meet in April. Heptathlon The Panthers have two multi competitors. Kristin Johnson (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) is the team s veteran while Erinn McMahon (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) is in her first season in multi events. Johnson s specialty is the high jump while McMahon is stronger in hurdles and jumps. The competition will begin at noon on Friday with the women s heptathlon and men s decathlon. Most of the qualifying events and a few distance events will take place on Saturday with the meet concluding on Sunday.
