A HUGE thanks to John Marchetti and Ron Linn for putting on a super Redfish Tournament. What a week of activities with a good time had by all. Also, a special thanks to our Redfish Tournament sponsors: Walker's Marine, Yamaha and Maverick Boat Company. Congratulations to all the winners, and there were many! HAPPY THANKSGIVING to Everyone! We should all give THANKS that we have MARCO ISLAND as a place to live (or visit) and fish. It s Redfish Time! Let the Games Begin! By Ron Linn After months of anticipation, Full of Bull, Marco Sportfishing Club s Tenth Annual Redfish Tournament had a rousing kick-off at The Old Marco Lodge. The Captain s meeting was held for 64 anglers and several sponsors, including Walker s Marine Group, Yamaha and Maverick Boats. This was a combined meeting for REDFISH X and REDFISH MONDAY anglers, two separate tournaments targeting the same fish with prizes totaling over $1300 for each event. With the assistance of President Allan Bristow, Tournament Directors, John Marchetti and Ron Linn reviewed rules, randomly picked teams, starting positions and generally had a good time with the crowd. A lot of Team Rivalry was born that night. For the REDFISH X competition, Admirals Victor Ordija (Blue team) and Jay Jones (Red team) got to meet their spirited anglers. For REDFISH MONDAY, coveted starting positions for the shotgun start were drawn. On the water in Goodland, The Marco Lodge not only provided great food & drink, but an inspiring backdrop for what was about to be an action packed week and a half of camaraderie, fishing, dining, and prizes. Let the fishing begin! REDFISH X Thursday and Friday (October 22 nd & 23 rd ) was the start of the team event, REDFISH X. Each team was sprinkled with novice and experts alike, all hoping for the Big Red. In the dim light, Thursday morning, many boats crept their way to their favorite spots. Although a few tried their hand north of Marco, most Captains steered their boats south in hopes of clean waters and abundant fish. The winds subsided slightly, sun shone brightly and the two day competition was on! For the Blue Team, novice fisherman & woman, Paul and Sharyn Kampmeyer caught their first Redfish, one each! Good job, many more to come. Admiral Victor hooked up to a big snook (as usual) to capture the largest wildcard fish and Captain Dick Yeaton and crew members Phil Madonia and Walt Turner, captured the three man boat award for two day event with 9 Redfish. At the completion of two days, the Blue Team caught 30 Redfish totaling 670 inches of fish. However, the Red Team appeared to have the edge in veteran fishermen. Admiral Jay Jones and crew member Keith Wolthman captured the two man boat award with 9 fish also. Awards were given for Day 1 and Day 2 Largest Redfish and 2 nd largest, most spots on a Redfish for each day, wildcard fish, etc. It appeared the Red team dominated these awards, capturing 7 out of 11 individual awards. Overall, the Red Team won the competition with 48 Redfish, totaling 1032 inches. Not bad fishing by both teams for a day and a half of fishing! After fishing that Friday, a Happy Hour/Tally Sheet Return party was held at Mario s Bar & Grill. Again, great appetizers, plenty of drink and a good time were had by all.

Lots of fish stories were told of the one that got away, but the Captain s Tally sheets told the real story. Peeking over the shoulders of the Admirals was common, especially if you thought you were in the running for an award. The Awards would have to wait until the following Wednesday, but before that, it was REDFISH MONDAY. This separate tournament is a competitive event fashioned after those Bass Tournaments that you may see on TV. Nineteen boats carrying 38 anxious anglers lined up 3 abreast at Walker s Coon Key Marina awaiting the GO Signal! At 10 second intervals, each group sped off into the sunrise to their secret honey holes. Each boat trying their best to land two slot size (18-27 ) fish. The weigh-in, from 1:00 to 3:00, was to be held back at Walker s Coon Key and officiated by an independent weighmaster. Hot Dogs and Beers awaited the returnees. An official leaderboard was set up to display team names and fish weights. Slowly the boats came in, everyone fishing the tide. When the dust settled, only five boats out of the nineteen brought 9 fish back to weigh-in, each taking their place on the leaderboard. MSC Tournament Place winners were, First Place, Captain John Marchetti and Mike Larsen, Second Place, Captain Jay Jones and Keith Wohltman, Third Place, Captain Ron Linn and John Baker, Fourth Place, Captain Dick Larson and Leslie Shade and Fifth Place Captain Jim Mueller and Allan Bristow. Between the first and fourth place fish total weight, there was only 1 pound difference! It was a close contest.

First Place: Capt John Marchetti and Mike Larsen

Second Place: Capt Jay Jones and Keith Wohltman Third Place: Capt Ron Linn and John Baker Awards totaling another $1300, plus 3 Maverick Boat apparel gift certificates were given out that afternoon. An awesome day for this tournament s anglers! To wrap up the Full of Bull tournaments, a lavish Awards Ceremony was held at The Old Marco Lodge on Wednesday evening for anglers and guest. Sponsor banners (Walker Marine Group, YAMAHA, and Maverick Boats) were hung throughout the venue. A singer/guitarist provided musical entertainment while everyone enjoyed

Prime Rib, Grouper and Shrimp Alfredo as a lavish buffet. After dinner, the awards for REDFISH X were presented by Tournament Directors, John Marchetti and Ron Linn. Over $1300 in awards were presented to club members for this tournament also! Anglers left Wednesday night, eager thoughts dancing in their minds and formulating new strategies in anticipation of next year s REDFISH XI! (L-R) President Allan Bristow, Directors Ron Linn and John Marchetti. This closure applies to all fishermen who fish in State and Federal waters. Commercial fishermen are excluded from this new regulation. Recreational harvest or possession of red grouper is prohibited. According to NOAA fisheries, this closure is necessary to protect the red grouper population. They state that despite the reduced limit from 4 to 2, landings data indicate the 1,900,000 pound recreational annual catch limit was harvested by October 7, 2015. If you wish to voice your opinion, send your comments to RichMalinowski@noaa.gov Many club members have already sent their comments to Mr. Malinowski.

Barracuda Fishermen: FWC approved new regulations for recreational and commercial bag limits for barracuda off South Florida. Two per person or six per vessel starting November 1, 2015. These changes apply in State and Federal waters off Collier, Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties only. Despite the closure of red grouper, coming up on November 17, is Grouper Gobbler + our last Club offshore event for 2015. Contest is to catch a Gag Grouper, King Mackerel, Cobia, or any kind of Snapper and bring your fish to our weigh-in. There will be awards for the heaviest fish in each division (20 nm and 60 nm). All the details are on our web site and in this newsletter. Reef Project Update: All reefs have been deployed and complete. The final reef was deployed on October 9, 2015. An offshore event is in the planning stages to go to Marco Reef 1(4 reefs) which is about 16 nm South of Marco. Marco Reef 2 (6 reefs) is about 27nm West of Marco. Thirty-six 500 ton reefs have been deployed for Naples, Marco and Collier. Until next month, may the Gulf be gentle with a light breeze and the bite good. Have a pleasant Thanksgiving!!! For November, Grouper Gobbler will take place on November 17. This is a club sponsored tournament and a weigh-in for the two heaviest combined groupers (Red or Gag) There will be two categories; 20 nm and 60 nm; Entry fee $10.00 per angler. For December no offshore event planned. Club will be involved with the Christmas boat parade. Events include December 5, backwater fish and dine on December 8, the Christmas street parade, December 12 (which our club will be participating in) our Holiday Dinner at Bistro Solei, December 15. Kayak outing will be on December 19 and of course, Christmas. Don't forget that if you fish offshore for Red Snapper, Red, Gag and Black groupers, Greater and Lesser Amberjacks, Banded Rudderfish, Aimaco Jacks, Vermillion Snapper or Gray Triggerfish, you are required to have a Gulf Reef Fish Survey license. Go to www.myfwc.com/fishing and click on Saltwater Recreational Regulations and then Gulf Reef Fish Survey to obtain this license or visit your local tax collector's office. The license is free

Kayak Fishing in McIlvane Bay by Vic Ordija After a week of windy weather, six kayakers were able to get out and fish McIlvane Bay on Oct 6th. We had a beautiful calm day and we were pleasantly to find clean clear water in this shallow bay. We fished the waters west of SR 951 and we were successful in landing a variety of fish. Almost all the anglers had at least one Redfish and most were in the slot. Several small Snook were also caught and Mike Larsen did very well by catching three nice Spotted Seatrout, which he kept for dinner. Howard Laskau caught a nice little Red but was a bit unlucky when he lost a large Snook that hit his bait in one of the secluded coves located in the area. A good day of fishing was had by all. Contact Victor Ordija at vicord1@comcast.net or call 239-494-6741 (home) or 239-628-7971 (cell) to sign up for the trip. You can also sign up for the event at the upcoming general meeting.

Sign Up! Kayak Fishing in Halfway Creek by Vic Ordija This kayak fishing event on November 12 th will take us into Halfway Creek which is located in the Big Cypress National Preserve. Halfway Creek is a complex chain of shallow brackish water lakes and waterways that drain into Chokoloskee Bay. The waters are clear and contain Snook, Redfish, Mayan Cichlids and Tarpon. Artificial lures are known to be effective in catching both Snook and Redfish in these waters. Tides have only a limited impact in these inland lakes. Alligators are present - be careful! Location; Sea Grape Canoe Launch Time; 7:30 AM Returning; approximately 1:00 PM Drop point for kayaks is at the canoe launch located at the end of Sea Grape Road. The entrance to Sea Grape Road is on US 41 and 2.5 miles east of State Route 29 and adjacent to the Big Cypress National Preserve Visitor's Center. The canoe launch is located 0.6 miles at the end of Sea Grape Road. Parking is free and there is no launch charge. In the event of bad weather and the trip is cancelled, the alternate date is Saturday, November 14, 2015. Contact Victor Ordija at vicord1@comcast.net or call 239-628-7971 to sign up for the event. You can also sign up at the upcoming general meeting which will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2015. Pied Piper Trip The Marco Loop by Howard Laskau It was a beautiful day to take a trip around Marco Island...and that s just what 8 Marco Sportfishing Club Captains and their crew did on Friday, October 9th. The main group left from the Jolley Bridge and then met up with a few other boats in Goodland. After that, the flotilla headed to Cape Romano, enjoyed the scenery and, of course, tried a little fishing. Photo 1- Barry and Judy French, Paul and Margie Milici and Jerry and Linda Keyes

Phil Madonia landed a nice Redfish, and others caught Sheepshead, Snook, Jacks, and the usual Catfish. Photo 2-Phil Madonia and RedFish Capt. Leo Sutera claimed he limited out on Catfish! From there, the group headed up to Blind Pass, did a little more fishing, and then took the Caxambas waterway through the Picket Fence into the Caxambas area. The Gulf was calm and that made the ride north up to Capri Pass very enjoyable. The group then headed up the Marco River and completed their Loop of the Island. The Marco Sportfishing Club runs a number of Pied Piper trips each year. The trips are designed to help new boaters and/or those new to the area practice and sharpen their navigation skills as they head to different locations with each trip. If you re a new boater, don t worry...all you have to do is follow the boat in front of you. Of course, any of our experienced Captains are also welcome to join the trips, and they do. If you would like to find out more about the Pied Piper trips, please go to the MSC website. The next trip will be to Naples/Naples Bay and will include a tour through the Port Royal area. The date is not set yet, but will most likely, be in January. Kim s Korner Hi, MSC newsletter readers! Check your inboxes for your 2015 MSC Holiday Party Invitation. You may sign up by mail, or at the November 5 or December 3 general meetings. Just don t wait too long to respond, as this is a popular event and we have limited seating. The Holiday Party Committee is busy at work putting together all the details. This year s event is sure to be the very best yet! The following recipe comes from one of our own, Lynn Nathanson. Here s what she says: Yum here s Marvin s dinner snapper imported from Marco Island into NY! And, she even provided us with this photo of the end result.

Marvin s Snapper Dinner Recipe This recipe works well with any mild white fish: snapper, grouper, and flounder to name a few. I have used it with all these and receive kudos! Spread a thin layer of Hellman's Mayo on each fillet. Squeeze a little fresh lemon, paprika, salt & pepper to taste. Place thin pats of butter on top and then use plain panko crumbs over that*. The baking time is varied depending on the thickness of the fish but I use a 350 oven and the average is about 12 minutes. I then turn on the broiler and with the fish low in the oven, I crisp the top a little, watching carefully. *Flavored breadcrumbs can also be used to flavor it up a bit. And one more recipe from another of our own, Dave Rasmussen: The Best Tuna Salad Ever 1 can albacore tuna 2/3 cup non-fat cottage cheese 4 tablespoons plain low-fat yogurt ¼ small red onion, chopped finely 1 stalk celery, chopped finely 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Splash of lemon juice Pinch or two of dill or tarragon or thyme Put all ingredients into a bowl and give it a good mix. Don t forget to mark your calendars and send in your reservations for the Holiday Party. If you have any questions about the event, feel free to contact me at 443-223- 8363 or kimking8722@gmail.com. Looking forward to seeing you in mid-december, if not sooner. And submit those recipes, thanks! kk IMPORTANT SAVE THE DATE! MSC Holiday Party Tuesday, December 15, 2015

There will be a short wait list in case of cancellations. 2) No refunds will be given for cancellations on the day of the picnic. 3) A list of paid attendees will be published several days prior to the picnic so there will be no confusion about who has paid or not paid. 4) In order to facilitate the above list and allow proper notification to caterers, the payment deadline is one week prior to the picnic. 5) Payment must be in the hands of the picnic chairman by the deadline, not in the mail (just like the banks, so be aware of holidays). 6) The late fee is $5 per/person. 7) Walk-in fee is $5 (plus $5 late fee). 8) The guest fee is $5 (other fees above also apply). You cannot park in the MICA lot with this sticker. 3) Pay the fee for parking in the Collier County parking lot ($8). 4) Ride with someone who has a sticker. 5) Trade cars with a friend who has a MICA sticker. If that friend has the wallet ID, then the friend can drive your car into Sarazen Park also. 6) Be aware that Park Rangers sometimes hassle you, claiming the parking is for the beach only, and will ticket you if you go to the picnic. HINT: Don t make it obvious you re going to picnic (e.g. passing chairs over fence).
