One big event you won t want to miss is our annual Holiday Party. The party is scheduled for Monday, December 15 th, and has become one of MSC's most popular events of the year. A big thanks to Howard Laskau and Keith Wohltman for putting on a fantastic Redfish Tournament. These guys put in many hours of hard work so our anglers could enjoy a week of fun activities including fishing! Can't wait till next year. Also, a special thanks to our 2014 Redfish Tournament sponsors: WALKER'S MARINE, YAMAHA & MAVERICK BOAT COMPANY. See you on the water, Allan Bristow Fishtale: Why do we like to fish? 3 RECENT CATCHES- Submit Photos of Your Catch! Vic and Bobbie Ordija submitted photos this month. Outstanding Catches! September, 2014 Buddy Trip There was a Buddy List outing to the Coon Key/Sugar Bay and the southern areas on September 17. The weather was hot as was to be expected and the trip had only three anglers in attendance. Interestingly, each of the three volunteered their boats but there was no crew to be found. Therefore, the three, Barry French, Howard Laskau and Mike DeVaughn all fished on Barry s boat. This was great in the hot weather since Barry has the only boat with misters that I know of. Imagine getting a gentle spray on the face while cruising on a heated day. Is that luxurious fishing or what? The three had a great time even though the fish didn t cooperate. The catch consisted of small snappers, catfish and an assortment of other unwanted fish. The next Buddy List Trip will be on Monday, November 17, If you have any questions/comments or wish to be added to the list contact Joe Perino rivpress@aol.com Kim s Korner Hi, MSC Newsletter readers! The November fish of the month is snapper, any kind of snapper. This got me to wondering, just how many different types of snapper are there in Florida waters? According to ioutdoor.com, here are the top 5 most popular snapper species in Florida: The Red Snapper is the most popular snapper in Florida because of its amazing size which could grow from 3 to 50 pounds. Areas to find it during open season include bridges and piers, and offshore on the continental shelf. Also known as the Gray Snapper, the Mangrove Snapper is also widespread in Florida s saltwater. Other than mangroves, juveniles can also be found inshore in inland waterways, tidal creeks and grass beds while adults typically thrive nearshore and offshore in wrecks, rock and coral reefs. Most distinguishable due to its yellow tail, the Yellowtail Snapper is smaller but just as tasty compared to its cousin, the Red Snapper. Feeding mostly on

4 shrimp, it can be caught offshore in Florida up to depths of 300 feet. During the summer months, it is most abundant in the Florida Keys. One of the largest snappers, the Mutton Snapper can be found especially from spring to fall when they spawn. It can be found in inland areas along mangroves and canals where it feeds on preys like smaller fishes and snails. Cubera Snapper is the largest of the snapper family, growing up to more than 110 pounds in size. Juveniles can be found inshore in grass beds while adults thrive in rocky reefs, ledges and wrecks where they feed on fishes and crustaceans. Other species of the Snapper family that can be found in Florida include: the Lane Snapper, Mahogany Snapper, Blackfin Snapper, Dog Snapper, Queen Snapper, Schoolmaster, Silk Snapper and Vermilion Snapper. All over the world, there are more than 100 species of snappers discovered. FISH BURGERS Makes two (8-ounce) burgers This recipe is made with salmon, but you can use any tasty fish you like! 1 tablespoon capers, rinsed, drained and chopped 2 tablespoons chopped dill pickle from 1 mini dill 1 ½ teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon dry mustard 2 tablespoons (3 each) chopped green olives 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 ½ tablespoons mayonnaise 1 egg yolk ½ teaspoon kosher salt ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper teaspoon ground chipotle 5 tablespoons panko crumbs 8 ounces skinless fresh salmon, diced small ¼ cup thinly sliced green onions (1 ounce) 1 ½ tablespoons grape seed or olive oil Mix all ingredients, except the salmon, green onions and oil, together in a bowl. Fold in salmon and green onions. Form mixture into 2 patties and refrigerate until firm. Place a sauté pan over medium heat. Add oil to pan and, when oil is hot, add patties and sauté them 3 to 4 minutes per side. Place on your favorite toasted bun and serve. (Recipe from MSC Newsletter Editor, David Rasmussen) Please save these dates: December 15, 2014 for our Holiday Party (see more information in this newsletter and on the website) and March 25, 2015 for the Baiting Beauties 2 ladies fishing event. I d love to hear from you. I m looking for recipes to publish! Feel free to contribute to my Korner, thanks! KK kimking8722@gmail.com SAVE THE DATE! Tuesday, March 24, 2015

8 Introduction to the Buddy List by Joe Perino The mission of the Buddy List is to create an atmosphere of fishing fun and social interaction. The list currently consists of 113 people some with boats and some without. All of the Buddy Trips are inshore and back water. The boats all start out together in the morning and fish most of the day. If a person has no boat I try to match him up with a guy that has one. We start out fishing in the morning and come back to the dock in late afternoon to clean the boats and the fish. In the evening we all meet with our wives/significant others for cocktails at 6 PM and dinner at 7 PM at various restaurants on Marco. I encourage people to attend the cocktail/dinner party so that everyone gets to know one another. The group consists of a great bunch of guys and we all have a lot of fun. The evening cocktail hour and dinner allows for us to get to know one another as well as to include spouses/significant others in the mix. We all get to be comfortable and evolve into the Buddy List family. Many of the people on the Buddy List are expert anglers and are always willing to share their expertise with the novice or newbie fisherman. If you wish to join the Buddy List I will need your telephone numbers (cell and home) and if you have a wife/significant other. If you do, I will add her name to the list so she can associate with the other ladies. I also need to know if you have a boat (what size and type) and what months you are on Marco. Upon receiving your information your name will be added to the group and you will receive a file of the addresses of the other members on the list. Your address will not be published on the website. will be the primary means of contact. This season there will be a Buddy Trip on November 17, 2014, none in December because of all the festivities and one on January 13, The dates for February, March, April and May, are TBA. Any questions or comments contact Joe Perino rivpress@aol.com

Marco Island, FL Picnic Tips Picnics will be held rain or shine (except for Named Storms ). CURRENT PICNIC PARKING RULES As of November, 2011, MICA started enforcing the beach sticker required parking rule at Sarazen Park, and the City no longer allows parking on the swales within a mile of South Beach Access/Sarazen Park. The fine is $95. There are several solutions if you do not have a MICA beach pass: 1) Marco Island residents can purchase a sticker at the MICA office (above the Mutual of Omaha Bank on San Marco and S. Barfield) for about $130. You will need the car registration plus a tax bill or homeowners insurance policy with your name on it. You can also get an ID for your wallet, which allows you to park any car. 2) Get a Collier County beach sticker from the library or Caxambas boat ramp, and park in the Collier County parking lot, which is adjacent and east of the MICA lot. You cannot park in the MICA lot with this sticker. The stickers are free to Collier County residents, but you need your car registration. Note that in season on nice days, the Collier County lot could be full by mid-morning.* 3) Pay the fee for parking in the Collier County parking lot ($8).* 4) Ride with someone who has a sticker. 5) Trade cars with a friend who has a MICA sticker. If that friend has the wallet ID, then the friend can drive your car into Sarazen Park also.* 6) * For 2 and 3 above, be aware that Park Rangers sometimes hassle you, claiming the parking is only for the beach only, and will ticket you if you go to the picnic. This hasn t been tested in court, but if you get a ticket, get a picture of yourself on the beach for the judge. HINT: Don t make it obvious you re going to picnic ( e.g. passing chairs over fence).
