MSC Tackle Box www.marcosportfishingclub.com Allan Bristow, President Dedicated to Safely Fishing in and around Collier County July 2015 President s Message by Allan Bristow Happy Fourth of July to Everyone! And what a great country we live in! The weather in July usually means fishermen can almost plan every day to go fishing. Light winds and calm seas provide excellent conditions to take the boat out and fish for your favorite species. Snapper fishing has long been my favorite family fishing. You can catch them close to shore; they are easy to catch and are a great table fare. On the club front, our Board of Directors is busy planning next season's activities. From fishing events, tournaments, picnics, parades and parties, our club just gets better year after year. If you have some creative ideas please email them to me. This month we will have our annual Shark Tournament. Tony Saputo is the event organizer and you don't want to miss out on this fun filled event. And guess what is on the menu at the angler s social picnic? Yep, Shark! August is right around the corner and that means the start of MSC's Fifth Annual Morgan Stanley Triple Crown Tournament. This tournament runs from August 1 thru October. Anglers can contact Victor Ordija for details. Stay Cool and we will see you on the water, Allan Bristow Fishtale: A reel expert can tackle anything.

Our newsletter reports must be in to our editor by June 21 so I'm unable to report how many Permit and Pompano were caught. As I write this report on June 20 th, 6 boats with 14 anglers participated. At the captain's meeting on June 24, John Cavanagh, an avid Permit angler, shared his knowledge on how and where to catch this powerful fish. Other captains and crew also shared their knowledge on how and where to catch Permit and Pompano. Captains and crew also enjoyed the buffet dinner that the Marco Island Brewery prepared. Shark Bite Event We will go Shark fishing on July 22 and then on July 23 we plan to grill the fresh shark filets along with other good food at Goodland Park at noon. Picnic is only for those who fish, your spouse or one guest. If you can t make it to the meeting on July 2nd, you can sign up and mail a check

No Charge Gag Grouper season opened on July 1 closes December 2. In State and Federal Gulf waters minimum size limit is 22 and the bag limit is 2 per angler within the four-fish grouper aggregate limit. Measured as total length. Total length is the straight line distance from the most forward part of the head with the mouth closed to the farthest tip of the tail with the tail squeezed together while the fish is lying on its side. BEACH CLEAN-UP by Allan Bristow So, what is there to do on a beautiful Saturday morning on Marco Island? Well, on June 6th, which was one such Saturday, 21 Marco Sportfishing Club members gathered to clean up Marco Island s South beach area. The City of Marco Island Beach Advisory Committee and Marco Island Civic Association (MICA) invited MSC to host their June Beach Clean-up. We all gathered at the South Beach boardwalk access to walk Marco the beach to remove trash and debris while enjoying the warmth of the morning sun, the gentle breeze of the Gulf of Mexico and the sounds of gentle waves, birds and people enjoying the beach! Publix provided gloves, bags and bottled water for all the participants. It was a successful clean-up with the group removing trash, including plastic straws, from the white sandy beach. Big thanks to all who participated!

21 MSC Volunteers Clean Up South Beach on June 6 Kayak Fishing in Chokoloskee Bay by Vic Ordija A small group of five kayakers fished Chokoloskee Bay on a bright and calm morning of June 9th. We launched our boats from the Gulf Coast Visitor Center in Everglades City, crossed Chokoloskee Bay and fished various oyster bars adjacent to Indian Key Pass. Fish were actively feeding and the group caught twenty five legal size Spotted Seatrout, four Redfish, One Snook, several Mangrove Snappers and John Moore hooked into a four foot Spinner Shark. The group was thrilled to see the shark take four spinning leaps out of the water before John was able to get him to the boat. All the fish were released except for two trout that Moore took home for dinner. Victor Ordija caught a 23.5'' Redfish (photo below) and a 19'' Spotted Seatrout and both fish are entered in the 2015 Kayak Fishing Challenge with a chance to win a monogrammed fishing shirt. Jay Jones (photo below) and Howard Laskau both caught a Redfish and John Baker caught a Snook. Everyone caught several Spotted Seatrout. We had a great day!

I just LOVE it when an MSC member drops a recipe in my lap, literally! This month s recipe is submitted by our own John Baker. You would recognize John as the 50/50 Man at our monthly membership meetings, and as a frequent chef at our picnics and fishing events. He s also the go-to guy for our MSC nametags. We couldn t ask for a more dedicated volunteer. He has inspired yours truly and many others to get more involved in our Club, and I hope that his involvement inspires you too. (BTW, are there any volunteer Newsletter Editors out there?) John reports that this recipe is cheap and good! But he didn t use chicken. Instead, he used fish, cut in small pieces, and shrimp, peeled and cut in small pieces. He also says, I did not use the tomatoes or basil. I used 1 cup water and 1 cup milk. And don t forget your left over fresh bait shrimp is edible! Chicken (or Fish and Shrimp) Margherita Alfredo 4 Servings, Prep time: 10 minutes, Cook time: 15 minutes 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into thin strips 1 Tbsp. butter (or butter spread) 1 ½ cups water ½ cup 2% milk 1 packet Knorr Pasta Sides Alfredo Broccoli 1 cup grape tomatoes, halved ¼ cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced

1. Season chicken, if desired, with salt and pepper. Melt butter in nonstick skillet over medium-high heat and cook chicken, stirring occasionally, until chicken is thoroughly cooked, about 5 minutes. Remove chicken; set aside and keep warm. 2. Stir water and milk into same skillet and bring to a boil over high heat. Stir in Knorr Pasta Sides Alfredo Broccoli packet and continue boiling over medium heat, stirring occasionally, 8 minutes or until pasta is tender. Stir in chicken, tomatoes and basil; heat through. Enjoy this recipe, and please feel free to contribute to my Korner, thanks! One more thing SAVE THE DATE Holiday Party December 14, 2015! JULY EVENTS Gag Grouper Season Opens!
