Looking at the calendar, I see Sailing Camp, Youth Tennis Lessons, TGIFs, several private events, yoga, music, bar nights, sailing races, tennis and pickle ball court times, and Ski Club. If you aren t participating in a Yacht Club activity, you are missing out! We promised you a summer of physical activity, good food, a friendly and well stocked bar and a gathering spot to meet new and old friends and neighbors. I m happy to see so many of you taking advantage of the offerings that make a Clear Lake summer so special and memorable. These activities are made possible by volunteers who pass on their love of Clear Lake by helping the young people of Clear Lake learn to love skiing, sailing, tennis and lake life as much as the volunteers do. Thank you to every volunteer for your time and good spirit. arrive early each day for Sailing Camp. The last volunteer to arrive gets to clean up the occasional goose poop from the seawall area! The June sailors were a timely bunch and enjoyed seeing kids 7-14 get more confident by the hour with sailing terminology and skill. Tennis and ski club offer similar steady progress for young Clear Lakers and visitors. Yacht Club Membership is thriving, and I am having a blast getting to know so many new families. They, in turn, are enjoying the Yacht Club s friendly environment for making new connections on the Lake. Thanks for making the Club a fun and welcoming gathering place. I hope to see you at the Club often in July. Jack Horrell, 2018 Commodore My favorite volunteer experience so far is Chris Hughes motivational tactic for getting his Sailing Camp volunteers to

V O L U M E 8 2 I S S U E 3 P a g e 3 TENNIS AND PICKLEBALL Youth Tennis Camp Starts Next week! The annual CLYC Youth Tennis Camp is coming up very soon. There are still openings, so have your kids or grandkids join us for some tennis and fun. The dates are July 9, 11, and 13 (M, W, and F) and July 17 and 19 (T and TH) from 10:30 11:30 AM at the CLYC courts. Each recipient will receive a cool T-shirt. Just bring a racquet, and we ll provide the balls and professional coaches. Kids should be age 7+ but do not need to be CLYC members to participate. Our thanks to the Steuben County Community Foundation Clear Lake Fund for helping support this event. Call or e-mail Jan Matasick (513-312-1691) to sign up. Clear Lake Tennis/Pickleball News IMPORTANT The courts are buzzing with use now that summer is in full swing. While it s great to see so many people enjoying them, ask anyone who has been there about their condition...the 40-year old courts are badly deteriorated. The last "patch" was 7 years ago, and cracks began appearing within a year, worsening each year since. They are frankly becoming dangerous. (see pictures) A committee was formed made up of Rick Johnston, Susan Kramer, Jan Matasick, Sue Stout, Leo Weber, and Barb Wenger. We have had various experts inspect the courts and have been told there are options to improve the substrate and drainage of the courts in order to provide a longer-term improvement. An initial estimate for this work is $130,000. Our current Tennis/Pickleball Treasury has $30,000. Given the state of the courts, there is an urgency to not let this go another year. We would need to commit this summer to have the work done over the Fall and Winter. Donations are critically important to make the necessary improvements and keep the tennis and pickleball courts useable. We have a group of donors who have issued a Donation Challenge through July 31, 2018. For every $2 you donate, this group will donate an additional $1 (up to a maximum of $40,000). Let s take advantage of this matching opportunity! While not all of us play tennis or pickleball, it is a wonderful asset of Clear Lake for our families and guests that improves our property values. It s yet another connection to the Lake we all love. Questions (or donations) may be directed to any of the committee members.

V O L U M E 8 0 I S S U E 3 P a g e 6 SAILING NEWS CLYC Sailing Opportunities For information please contact Chris Hughes and the Sailing School CLYCSailingSchool@gmail.com 260-243-0448 Sailing School June Sailing Camp was a huge success with the kids having lots of fun. The winds cooperated for the most part. The kids did get a wonderful speed boat ride home from Pizza King after winds started blowing over 15 mph. A big Thank You to all the volunteers. The kids would not have had so much fun without you. The next Camp is July 16 th and 18 th. The camp is currently full. Sailing Club We have 4 races in the books with 4 different winners. Everyone is sailing extremely well at the beginning of the year. Winds have been on the lighter side, but strong enough to make it fun. Just a reminder that races are every Saturday at 11 AM. The Sunday Series sails in July and Aug only, starting at 11 AM. We are always looking to teach people how to sail by crewing on one of these exciting boats. The Sailors have also been known to have a good time at the Yacht Club before and immediately following a race. So, come crew, stop by before for some friendly prerace banter, or stop by for the race results after the races. Adult Sailing Clinic We are currently looking into a date and interest in a 1-day Adult Sailing Clinic. If you are interested contact Chris Hughes and the Sailing School. Sunfish Races Sign up now! This is an educational series with instructors on site before, during, and after the races to help and coach. The first season was a huge success, so sign up for the fun this year. All ages and abilities are welcome. This series consists of 4 races on Sundays in July: the 8 th, 15 th, 22 nd, and 29 th. Committee Boat Job Hiring! Our Committee Boat Helper will be retiring after this season. We are looking for someone to run the races for us going forward. The job pays well and takes up 3 hours each Saturday morning from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The job consists of: setting the race course, firing the cannon for the starting sequence, keeping track of the race results, cleaning up the course, and putting the boat away. Please contact Chris Hughes if interested.

V O L U M E 8 0 I S S U E 3 P a g e 8 SKI CLUB It was great to see everyone at the past few meetings and our first TGIF grill night. Things are really going to heat up in July. As a reminder, our July meetings are July 7, 14, and 21, starting at 10 AM. Donuts, juice, and milk are provided. We plan to practice after (and sometimes before) most meetings. Members will not be allowed to practice until they turn in their liability waivers. The ski jump is in the water! Special thanks to Darrell Lapham for his continuous assistance in taking the jump in and out every year. Reminder to all members: the ski jump is not a toy and should only be used for jumping. I'm excited to announce the Club is hosting a Bowling Party on Tuesday, July 3rd from 7:30-9:30 at Angola Bowl. RSVPs are required by Sunday, July 1st. On Saturday, July 14th, the Buehrer family will be hosting the fifth annual Movie Night. The Ski Club grill will fire up for TGIF on July 6, 13, and 20. We will provide two meal options. Kid meals, which include a burger or hot dog, chips, cookie and juice box, are $5. Adult meals, which include grilled chicken and asparagus, are $8. The Ski Club will host its Annual All CLYC Fundraiser Meal on July 27, and we've added an exciting turtle racing event for kids and adults. Thank you to Larry Koesters for building the turtle race track and Conner "Turtle Man" Slee for recruiting the fastest turtles on Clear Lake. Please come ready to race and donate! Our annual ski show is on July 28, starting at 2 PM. Please come out to watch some of the lake's finest skiers and support the club. Zack Short, Ski Club President
