999 Coastal Challenge The Round Britain 999 Coastal Challenge In June of this year (2014) ten operational team members of Watersafe UK Search & Rescue Team (WUKSART) will be attempting to circumnavigate the entire coastline of Britain in a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) to raise funds for both WUKSART and the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI). This unique challenge will be a great test to all involved as we aim to circumnavigate 1,999 miles of British coastline in just 9 days, 9 hours and 9 minutes. The event will start at the RNLI Headquarters in Poole and in a clockwise direction will stop off at certain RNLI lifeboat stations situated at strategic points along the British coastline with the event eventually finishing again at Poole. The Journey On each leg of the challenge there will be a crew of four in the boat at all times. As well as obviously needing a driver, there will be a person responsible for navigation and the other crew members will be responsible for the running of the boat as well as safety officers looking out for dangers and communicating with the driver and rest of the crew. Once out at sea the boat crew will be totally alone and responsible for themselves and therefore self sufficient on each leg of the challenge carrying everything on board such as food & water, emergency equipment, spare fuel, etc. Throughout the 10 day challenge there will be a support crew which will be liaising with the boat team, HM Coastguard and the RNLI and will be following the boats progress. The support team will be meeting up with the boat at each RNLI lifeboat station at the end of each day. RNLI Royal National Lifeboat Institute The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. They provide an on call 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service. Their values reflect the way they do business as an organisation. Their purpose is to save lives at sea and their vision is simple; to end preventable loss of life at sea. Their work is based on and driven by values. All the volunteers and staff strive for excellence and are selfless, willing to put the requirements of others before their own and the needs of the team before the individual, able to see the bigger picture and act in the best interests of the RNLI, and to be inclusive and respectful of others. Most lifeboat crew members are volunteers, who come from all walks of life and give up their time and comfort to save lives at sea. They respond at a moment's notice when the pagers go off. Crews are regularly called away from their families, their beds and their work, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their lifesaving work is essential, often difficult and sometimes dangerous. They operate through local teams, centrally directed and resourced. Their exceptional expertise is in the preservation of life at sea and on the water through prevention and rescue. The RNLI has saved more than 139,000 lives since its foundation in 1824 as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck. The name was changed to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in 1854, and cork lifejackets were first issued to crew members in the same year. The 20th century saw the RNLI continue to save lives at sea through two world wars. Lifeboats moved from sail and oar power to petrol and diesel, and the first women joined their crews. They are extremely proud of their history and tradition and of the RNLI s achievement of saving lives over nearly two centuries.
