3 Attention Swine Exhibitors! Now that you have your YQCA completed you need to log into www.yqca.org and save your certificate. This certificate will need to be uploaded to your 4honline account under one of the pigs you plan to exhibit by July 1. If you need assistance please let us know. Attention owners of registered livestock! Registration papers need to be uploaded into your animals records by July 1 in 4honline. The easiest way to do this is take a picture of the paper on your smart phone and attach it to the animal s record. Since the July 1 deadline is a Sunday, you can also bring a copy to the office by June 29th and we will upload it for you. If you need any help please call the office. 9 What is the 4-H Horticulture Skillathon? The horticulture Skillathon tests youth s knowledge when it comes to identifying common plants, knowing parts of a plant, selecting fruit/vegetables to eat, and then as a youth expands their knowledge different components are added to the contest. Beginners need to know: vegetables and fruits and study these guides Beginner Parts and Vegetable Garden Guide. Juniors need to be able to identify flowers and indoor plants and also know the difference between fruit, nuts and berries. Juniors should use this Plant Part Study Guide and Managing Trees and Shrubs. Seniors will have classes in fruits, vegetables, flowers, landscape ornamentals and should study Greenhouse Structures and Plant Nomenclature. We also have identification flashcards that can be made upon request. This contest is held three times at the county level and then at the SD State Fair. Project Spotlight: Horticulture To exhibit in the horticulture project area, now is the time to get those vegetables in the ground. Gardening is fun project to do as a family and a great way to get kids outside. Page 76 and 77 of the State Fair Book list the different veggies that can be exhibited. With horticulture if for example your cucumbers are ready at Achievement Days and not for State Fair you can substitute exhibits and show a different vegetable that is ready. http://igrow.org/up/resources/01-4035- 2017.pdf is your resource for how to exhibit vegetables.
